I heard a rumour that you are looking for another 1973 240Z - something about having a full set.

You offering to sell your 1? ????. I will find a 73 after I have bought myself a house/warehouse to live in and have somewhere to store it.

It was actually more tongue in cheek than anything else, but there is 1 particular 73 240z I would definitely buy. Hint is in the signature but current owner is not selling. :)

Haha I know it was. and in all fareness, I dont see myself owning a 240z, unless I get lucky of course.

Oh, and maybe the current owner wants you to buy a house/property first! haha

Yesterday I hosed off the dust and took it to Datsun Day, it was really good to get it out for a drive instead of just staring at it in my garage.

It was also good to know summer has finally arrived because my car's seasonal issue of "venting" fuel out the breather onto the road on hot days has started again. Joy.

Glad I'm not the only one with a dodgy breather. I end up with a nice puddle on the garage floor whenever I fill up. Edited by andyk_79

It's actually pretty easy to fix, the hardest bit is getting the filler neck on and off the tank. I had to heat mine up with a butane torch to get it back on.

Me three for the fuel overflow issue,  have the new hose just need to harden up and get on with it!

Agno I think we drove past each other just outside of Yarra Glen.  around 11:30.

Finally fixed my clunky diff issue that came about after installing new moustache bar bushes.

New front mount only partially fixed it, added a few millimetres of shims between the mount and diff today and it now clears the sway bar under heavy deceleration :)

yesterday, planned to remove the heater core & valve, to test & repair any leaks. thinking we could just remove these without taking out the dash........

well i guess i can change all of my gauge globes now and maybe even get the dash reskinned!

It's worthwhile once it's fit back in and everything is working.

Yep. Just waiting on a replacement heater core and new globes to come in.

Not today, but the other day..

I painted my undertray in a grey-ish colour. It's a little bit too reflective (glossy) but I actually think will look fine once fitted and I'm still not 100% sure on the OEM finish anyway.

This will go on my 72 240z I think.

Wow an under tray and in good condition too.

Got my new brakes sorted.  :)  324mm skyline rotors machined and fitted into a 16" wheel.

I bought some smaller 296mm rotors a few months back and machined them up to fit my 240 hubs, but was not happy with the caliper mounting. The larger disc allows the caliper to be mounted further out and worked out much better.

The photo shows the smaller 296mm rotor and the larger 324mm on the strut.

It didn't start in good condition (it actually got panel beating and heat shrinking lol).

before.

Nice brakes, but won't fit under my steelies!

Started putting some of my interior back in, haven't had much time to work on the car lately as we've moved into a new place and been busy with boring furniture and painting tasks!

I had these pillars wrapped in black leather last year. Decided to use black flanged button head socket drive 5mm bolts throughout the interior, rather than plastic clips. Black rubber washers will be used on the plastic trims for a bit of protection against cracking/rattling.

On the weekend I bought more garage shelving to store stuff. Removed the old work bench as it's in the way and too wide and plan to buy a tool chest from Bunnings with a work bench on top that can store all my tools and roll out of the workshop when needed.

For ages I avoided spending money on this stuff but it has got to the stage I spend ages trying to find my tools now.

Tonight I'm trying to cook my Hitachi SUs in a ultrasonic cleaner using dish soap. Not sure how it will turn out yet. I'll try truck wash on the weekend if it doesn't work well. Still a bit of an experiment.

*Edit have some before and after pics, bearing in mind I didn't disassemble these or remove the oil from the dashpots (forgot about those lol).

The magic degreaser!

IMG_20180221_214248.jpg

and after they have come out...

IMG_20180221_231759.jpg

It hasn't removed the harder baked on stuff, that needs some mechanical action or longer (It was in an hour in total 2x30min sessions) and there is various stains on the metal that don't come out. The gold passivate plating looks loads better (not seen so much in photos).

I imagine fully disassembled and using carb cleaner or another better cleaning agent would be far more effective.

Vapor blasting is probably superior in many ways, but this is good for cleaning small items at home and getting grease / crud off them. The domes on the SUs have some light scratches etc.. and I'd love to retain the factory fresh look but it is also tempting to polish them.

Check this out... bit of steel wool, WD40 and elbow grease.. (15 mins or so of work) but at least I did something!

The rest of the exhaust system is actually not in too bad shape, so I might sandblast it and then coat it with VHT (high heat) silver paint. The exhaust headers I might have HPC coated (provided not full of pin holes).

Decided to try and remove the bog from this hatch I've had a while now..

IMG_20180325_165303.jpg

There is bog on the underside too..

IMG_20180325_174524.jpg

So I used a propane torch and burnt it off (lots of ventilation), but I didn't want to use a flap disk or kick up lots of dust.

IMG_20180325_181731.jpg

It wasn't quite so bad underneath...I was expecting more rust, but really just bad dents.

IMG_20180325_181738.jpg

The 1 spot of disappointment was near the edge on passenger side. I could see bog in it before stripping it, but it appears that instead of actually try and patch it, they just filled this rust hole with bog on both sides and called it a day!

IMG_20180325_190553.jpg

I test fitted on the car to see how the panel gaps are (very good).

IMG_20180325_190558.jpg

Panel gaps.

This will be a side project I work on in my spare time, I'll undo the spot welds and try and separate the skin and frame, then panel beat and shrink it where applicable, patch the rust and put it back together...

I've already put together a hatch, but this is more about improving my skills.

So, I finally went out to the Feb Yarra valley chrome bumpers meet, almost solely to see KATOKIDS car and it was glorious!

Only issue was my left inicator stopped working on the way there.

Yesterday, I removed the unit, cleaned and put back on and still couldn't get it to work reliably. I decided to desemble where the contact point at; solder some new points on and slightly stretch the spring. I also regreased certain parts. it worked a treat and now the indicator stalk is changing smoother than it ever had

I also came across this indicator stalk in a box of spares which is slightly different to the early 240 one. It has the additional 'push' button. Is this a 260 part? What does the push button do?
