reverendzed Posted July 3, 2010 Author Posted July 3, 2010 OK so wet day + the need to 'stretch' my brain caused me tio once again address the whole filters and trumpets thing. So I went to Bunnings and Clark rubber with some ideas in mind and after some trial and error, some sanding, grinding and filing I came up with a very snug fit individual 'pod' type filter that slips over the end of each trumpet. I inserted a foam rubber 'o' type ring which you can see in the pics which allows the filter to push over the trumpet and have a tight fit without the need to secure it further. This is the prototype and I may make some mods as I go along. The beauty of this set up is a mesh which the filter foam sits against and then a cap/retaining piece that can be opened to clean, replace the filter. I'll have to do all of them then drive it to see if it makes any different under load. This is all made from plumbing pieces! Rev. Quote
garvice Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 Good ingenuity and plus one for the effort Rev, but it isn't my cup of tea. I think it detracts from the look of the trumpet a bit. Personally I really like the look of filters where you can still see the trumpet, kind of like below. Quote
reverendzed Posted July 3, 2010 Author Posted July 3, 2010 Now that I LIKE!!! problem is where to get them? I've been looking for some off the shelf solutions but nothing really available! Quote
Brabham Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 Hey Rev I just saw a set of three air filters to suit triple carbs on ebay under Datsun 260Z - they might be worth a try at $210. Quote
garvice Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 If you want something like the photo you might have to make it. That guy made his whole intake. Don't think it would be too hard though. Once you made up some dies you could press the mesh. Bending the clamp to hold the mesh would probably be the hardest (since you have to bend 6 of them the same). Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted July 3, 2010 Moderators Posted July 3, 2010 Steve Newing sells mesh covers already made to suit his trumpets you have already Dave, $33 each Quote
Toecutter Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 I reckon a fine metallic mesh would be good as I burned out the foam on one trumpet on a back fire. My guess is you would want to be carefull with the mesh though as it will allow dust to go through. Sulio Quote
NZeder Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 Steve Newing sells mesh covers already made to suit his trumpets you have already Dave, $33 each When I spoke to Steve about these - he said on the pro-trumpets you had to trim them a little and use a good glue to hold them on. I too am thinking about what to do. My setup has the trumpet bell mouths almost touching = they don't fit inside K&N filters and the like so it will have to be a airbox/plenum type setup - but then you hide the trumpets and Steve's trumpets are soooo nice you don't want to hide them away so I might have to see if a plastic/lexan type place can make a transparent airbox up. I am not 100% sure what to do really so I am watching this space Rev I like what you have done - might not be everyone's cuppa tea but that solution does look to solve the issue of running an air filter on each individual trumpet. chris240 Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 Dave..Ive seen some nice mesh "off the shelf" covers on one of the U.S sites that sit snuggly inside the trumpet, but I cant for the life of me recall which one...I thought I bookmarked it are these the ones Dimitri is referring to: http://www.weberperformance.com.au/index.php?cPath=36_80 Quote
zrevival Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 There are several mesh option filters available through ebay in the US - given the exchange rate, would be hard to beat in terms of costs and time to build your own http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/New-40-DCOE-Weber-Air-Horn-Filters-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem53e1832e85QQitemZ360265756293QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories Quote
sexual_sushi Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 If either of you decide to go for a airbox type setup, this is one of the nicer ones I have seen... Quote
Zedsabbath Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 Now that's an engine ! think I'll do a cardboard cutout, sit it in my engine bay and just dream Quote
RB30X Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 I'd like to see that one on the dyno, with an air dye going through the box and into the carbs at full noise. Quote
