Did you inspect it? Where is the rust?

Thought it looked familar.

No I didn't inspect it, but might go and have a look on Friday.

The rust is mentioned in the ispection report as being in the chassis rail.

"Not many of these are traded in anymore. But this one looked the goods in everyday driver condition but with amazing engine sound and perfomance.  We gave the owner $16,500 for this trade-in. So we are starting the auction at our costs which was purchase, service and transfer fees. There is no reserve so you could find yourself with a bargain when your buying at a dealer price. No warranty as the car is over 10 years old but it does have a NSW roadworthy. My mechanics have not found mechanical fault with the car But it is over 40 years old so expect it not to be new.

Our mechanics have run through the car and said its the best rust free unmodified 260Z they have seen in years, they simply changed the fluids, polished it and we have it for sale.

It is matching numbers and shows no sign of damage, only some sun/heat damage from age to the upholstery and dash.

The car shows 104,000 kilometres and we believe this to be genuine as there is very little wear on the car, only some age and sun damage as mentioned.

The L26 engine looks standard and is matching numbers and has had new carbies and a reconditioned head with some porting and valve work to take unleaded petrol. It performs very well but we don't know the history.

This is not a $30,000 collectors original item but very little work would be needed to make it a $30,000+ car.

It has no signs of any rust or rust repairs. It has no sign of any accident damage or body damage.

It is missing 2 Z caps for two of the original mag wheels.

 

Again starting price is our cost and we have no reserve but would hope that it sells for a price that starts with $2x,xxx as we are in business and you wont be unhappy with the car.

Well different eBay seller IDs, it could still be the same seller. I'm almost sure I saw a Datsun 240k coupe sold out of a similar looking garage a while ago. I can't find that listing now though.

The white 240z appears to be strikingly similar to the car sold on gumtree recently for $18k in about 12 hours. Was in NSW too.

The other 240z was HS30 01280 and it was a 71 sold to a guy in Victoria who is a member here. I can't recall if it sold for 18k or not?

 

There was another white 1 on Facebook a 72 but different chassis ID again.

Depends how bad it is, but just about anything can be fixed.

It could be next to nothing. The report just says rust, and makes no mention of rust in any of the other common spots. so it may just be a tiny spot - the only way to know is have a look

My brother looked at this. The car seemed quite solid although the surface rust and pitting on the stripped areas was pretty bad. It would've needed sandblasting for sure. The seller said he had been offered 14k to buy now while the auction was still going, I suspect he was fishing as interest had been very high.

 

Not a bad price in the end considering how solid the body looked. One for the serious restorers only though. Was anyone from here the winning bidder?

Not sure why they do not just put is up with a "Buy it Now" at their reserve?

A buy it now sets a fixed price on what something is worth, where as in an auction it could exceed said "buy it now" if 2 or more interested parties bid up the price.

 

Of course the best way to achieve the highest price is a sealed bid sort of auction where potential buyers put in their best offer.

 

An auction will only ever get you the second highest price someone is willing to pay.

 

When I bought HS30 00150, the under bidder was only willing to go up to around $5,500.

But I was prepared to go to $10k from memory.

 

I was delighted when I won the auction.

There is a lesson for the seller here, sometimes your first price is your best, after 3 goes people start to lose intertest, my opinion is that the interest has peaked !!  Plus the add is a bit misleading, it is not one owner, these people bought it from the estate of the first owner, so in reality they are the second owner unless they are licenced dealers !! Everyone knows what they paid, and they are certainly allowed to make a profit, but I think it made its money at the top price.
