russandra Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 Hi guys, have been following this build inpreparation for the restoration of my 72 240z. A mate of mine damages his m3 at the Noosa Hill Climb Last weekend and now has it up for sale. A complete 2004 m3 coupe for $11500. A good buy for those who want to go this route. I not convinced yet to go this way as my z already has healthy l28 and I am thinking of keeping it that way. KatoKid Posted November 13, 2016 Author Posted November 13, 2016 Ceratinly a good way to buy an S54 and gerabox. By the time you sold all the unwanted bits the drive train may owe you 8-9k. Only problem with the S54 engine is that its drive by wire throttle which presents a few issues as the ECU needs to see a lot more inputs from the chassis. There are manual throttle conversions https://store.vacmotorsports.com/vac-bmw-s54-drive-by-wire-elimination-kit--throttle-cable-conversion-p1341.aspx but these require an aftermarket ECU and if you want to go that way you may as well use DBW with the aftermarket ECU as most now support DBW.....but you are adding thousands to the cost plus tuning time on the dyno. There are people who claim they can reflash the factory ECU and remove DSC, EWS and the DBW but you hear various stories of success and its still $1500-$2000. this si the way I would go but you would need to do a lot of research. Also, the Getrag 6 speed is much bigger and heavier than the ZF 5 speed Ive used and I doubt would fit in the tunnel without some mods. S54 is the way to go for sure but a much harder route. M3240z Posted December 24, 2016 Posted December 24, 2016 Hi Dave i have a check in to your build thread every month or so as i have a mutual interest, as you know i built the S54 powered Z and love it as you will yours, i see you have had your header coated as i have but must let you know that due the close proximity of the header to bulkhead and servo area it gets very hot very quickly to the extent where you cant touch the bulkhead around the pedal box area especially standing still (traffic / rolling road) i greatly improved this by using this self adhesive barrier http://www.zircotec.com/zircoflex/zircoflex-iii/ i must say what a fantastic build you are doing and attention to detail is outstanding Terry Quote
KatoKid Posted December 25, 2016 Author Posted December 25, 2016 Thanks Terry for the heads up. Love your build! Yes, I am concerned about heat. Did you use the zircoflex inside the cabin or outside in the engine bay? Cheers Quote
M3240z Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 Yes Dave i used it inside the engine bay, not masses of it just along the chassis rail and inner wing below the servo and around the tranny tunnel also came in useful in places that the exhaust came close to the body above the rear exhaust boxes and sides of the wheel well as them rear boxes get very hot, my first attempt at at shielding the heat was to fabricate a custom heat shield affair attaching to the head and manifold itself but very difficult to do and had resonating issues, the zircoflex works really well even at full chat around Spa circuit Ponyo240z, CBR Jeff and Gordo 3 Quote
Cozza Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 Wow! Spa, what a track, a bit of everything. Your car seems to have a fair bit of poke too. Thanks for sharing the vid. ? Enzo 1 Quote
KatoKid Posted January 4, 2017 Author Posted January 4, 2017 Well the lead up to Christmas was hectic for work as well as family so I didn't get much accomplished on the project......but happy to say the fuel system is completed, wiring, installation of fuel module and tank, filter, hard lines and braided lines at each end. I went with a bigger Fuelabs filter which necessitated a new bracket and I had to put a loop in the braided line as it was too short to run direct to the pump outlet on the module. Braided lines at the engine bay end were easy enough but when I pressurized the system I found the slightest weep on the AN flare side (not the side where I made the fitting to hose joint). I undid this and gave the male end a clean up with some fine wet and dry and it looks to have fixed it. All the other connections are dry which makes me happy. Quote
KatoKid Posted January 4, 2017 Author Posted January 4, 2017 Got the heater hoses finished. Not very factory or elegant but given the space constraints it came up alright and will be reliable. Quote
KatoKid Posted January 5, 2017 Author Posted January 5, 2017 (edited) So...... much success and happiness in my pants today......despite my shed replicating the oven in our kitchen! Not enough fuel in the tank meant the pump was sucking air, hence the multiple cranks. Very happy with the exhaust note but road test will be the acid test. KatoKid Posted January 5, 2017 Author Posted January 5, 2017 Haha....I'm excited for me! Good motivation to finish, now I can rest easy knowing that the marriage with Z body and BMW engine works...electronics does my head in and has caused many sleepless nights. M3240z 1 Quote
PeterAllen Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 David. Congratulations... I know how you feel. These milestone come more as relief than a cause for celebration ...Good motivation to finish,... Tell him he's dreamin'. Quote
KatoKid Posted January 5, 2017 Author Posted January 5, 2017 You hit the nail on the head Peter...while its exciting, the relief of overcoming or achieving a significant milestone is much more cause for celebration. Quote

luvemfast Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 Much excitement for you Dave! Great job Quote
KatoKid Posted January 10, 2017 Author Posted January 10, 2017 Moving on to other things.....I'm going to use the dreaded R31 rear calipers and have followed Scoota's updates and recommendations http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/7330-tutorial-r31-skyline-rear-disc-conversion-for-240260z-new-300mm-rotor-conversion-sep2016/ I filled and finished the original mounting holes in the brackets and had an engineering shop machine the bore of the caliper brackets as required. No offence to Scoota (Mark) but I didn't want to risk the engineer knocking back the significantly modified brackets so I've elected to leave them pretty well untouched and have ground areas of the hub casting to get the brackets to fit and to rotate upwards as much as possible from the normal 3:00 o'clock position as per Mark's suggestions, hopefully this will be enough! Grinding the hub casting was pretty easy and didn't take long.....probably easier than modifying the brackets. Quote
zed240au Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Great to finally hear it running sounds good david Quote
KatoKid Posted January 11, 2017 Author Posted January 11, 2017 Thanks for your help too Mick. Will be interesting to hear what she sounds like with some load and throttle opening! Quote
hmd Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 I had an E36 M3 10 years ago and the power delivery around 4000 rpm and upwards is just addictive, the torque comes on like a train. This engine in a much lighter S30 body will be something else. Quote
