Time for brake lines...

Prior to starting this I checked with my engineer in regards to ditching the old brake pressure differential switch and using the Willwood portioning valve. The earliest brake ADR is ADR 31 effective Jan 1977 so our cars aren’t subject to this....but VSB 14 does require that any original equipment brake safety devices not be removed so I would need to retain some sort of brake warning functionality.  As an alternative, he suggested I use a brake master cylinder which has a low fluid warning level sensor, and wire that to the warning light and fortunately the R33 MC already has this.... so all good!

Brake lines were a time consuming PITA but very happy with the way they came up. Im using the orginal brackets and rubbers and if anyone wants to make new brake lines a little heads up.....the rubbers are not split so need to be slid off the old lines and slid onto the new ones before you make the bends and flare the ends. Brackets are pretty sad so have joined the list of stuff to get plated.

David. Bear in mind VSB are not the rules, mere guidelines.

Again, I'm sure you are across these things but here are a couple of hurdles I had to jump over.

If it is at all possible pressure test the line before installing the engine etc. Having stripped so many threads in my early days I'm a little prone to under-tighten fittings and as such I had a couple of weeping fitting which were a bugger to get at.

Also, I'm not sure what callipers you are installing but the m/c reservoir needs to have a capacity to at least match the volume of piston displacement in the callipers combined. i can't recall but I think the stroke is determined by the pad thickness.

Hi Peter.

Yep, Im aware that VSB is only a guideline but it suited me to quote it as it refers to ADR31 effective date so I was hoping it would work in my favour.

All my connection points are easy to get to so no issues there. Calipers and master/booster are from the same car for that reason...and others.

Very neat and tidy Dave.

Have you considered painting / powder coating the lines?

I have seen a build thread in Ozdat with black powder coated brake lines in a white 1600 engine bay, they look pretty shmick.

I don't want to give you more things to do and slow your progress down but...Just a thought!

Keep up the great work ;)

Ive seen the same build Mick and agree it looks great....still contemplating...I have to do something with the fuel lines anyway :)

Have to say, with the engine being predominantly alloy, those lines look a perfect match along with other alloy items like the booster etc, my 5 cents

Hate to mention it after the fact, but, no tension coils?

Edit: looks like the factory doesn't have them either.

That's looking great Dave. I was confused as the location of your break and fuel lines is down the passengers side. I'm guessing this is an early girl positioning that was moved to the drivers side later on. Or did I miss something earlier on in the build.

Looks great any way. Leave the lines ad they are.

Hey Jeff.

No great mystery mate...the BMW engine is canted over more than the L series and the exhaust runs down the drivers side so I had to move everything over to get away from the exhaust.

Pic on my test stand probably the best I have.

That's it. I was a but confused by what I was seeing. That would have taken a bit of work to move that lot from right go left. Just goes to impress even more. Great job Dave.

Little jobs getting knocked over.....

Needed to install the steering column but first I had to fix the ignition key barrel which like all the locks was stuffed so all the locks went to the smith for keying alike, general check over and I had a pair of new keys cut for each application.

Steering column now installed and the steering lock works now as it was gummed up and full of crap before.

Had a bit of a win.....word of mouth I picked up a NOS engine bay undertray very cheap!

Thats a great pick up Dave. I would discribe it as a big win.

Love that word of mouth. I have been trying to work out what to do about this on my car as like so many others it's missing. I think I will fabricate something from aluminium that is close to original. Having it installed helps the cooling of the car and I think it just gives the front a much neater look.

Been away for a week (school holidays) so haven't done anything but think about it.

Today I picked up the bits I had dropped off for plating before I left, every nut bolt, washer, bracket, latch and bit that was going back on the car.... 10kg worth.....all that glitters is gold!

Now that Ive got all the hardware plated I can start bolting stuff in for the last time.....fuel and brake lines first with all the nice plated brackets!

I decide to leave the engine bay brake lines in the natural zinc finish and painted the fuel and brake lines going to the rear in black. Looked at powder coating but blocking the ends and masking the threads was going to be an issue.

I went for a pretty serious Fuel Labs filter and had to make a bracket to support it, making sure it was pointed in the right location to connect to the fuel module.

Thanks, that confirms they were silver and not black!

Agree, the car just looks that bit neater with it on. You can still find them around, but getting harder to locate. The ones I have will need some hammer time to straighten them out a bit.

Geez, that Safari Gold with all the plated hardware looks great! I can't wait to be at that point in the build.

Thanks Gav, Im particularly chuffed with how the gold plating works with 920. I was little concerned about the door latches as they are silver/zinc from the factory but confident they wont look out of place in gold.

Yep, charged S54 is awesome but doesnt fit the brief for me....I l looked at NA S54 but FBW throttle was a hurdle to far at the time.

Your car is coming along really nicely mate. Its pleasing to see no shortcuts and the right attention to detail.

Thanks dat240z, have to keep reminding myself not to cut corners. Having come this far.....would be kicking myself if I let anything slip.

Real progress today, hopefully its in for good and I won't have any reason to pull it! Not that its hard to R & R.

Will need to reroute the front wiring harness, didnt realise it was that close to the exhaust....a good example of what happens when you dont install everything in the preliminary build.

Crikey... I bloke would have to be a complete idiot to create all the individual hybrid components for the engine bay and not expect interference issue when they were assembled together.
