peter t Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 Thought I had better say how good your car looks after the encouragement you give me. One ? Do you wet sand each colour coat or lay them on wet then let dry before applying clear coats. Well done mate. Quote
reverendzed Posted April 2, 2010 Author Posted April 2, 2010 Thanks Pete, It all depends! As this is my keeper I wet color sanded after 3 coats of color and then went back a couple of days later and laid down 2 more color and 2 clear coats. If you are getting neither of the typical spraygun extremes (orange peel:too wet or dry spray: too much air not enough paint) forget color sanding and leave it all to the end. If you put at least 3-4 coats of clear when you come to wet sand you will have a thick enough paint later to sand all the high spots and then cut and polish to a terrific shine. Quote
zrevival Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Hi Rev Really interesting thread. I'm spending this weekend painting the guards, cowling panels and hatches - really as a first go at this without getting into too much trouble - inspired by a number of the build threads in this forum. I'm using arcylic - and i'm having some dry spray problems. Surface is dry and 'sandy' in places - which happened after i refilled the paint cap (hvlp) - obvioulsy i wasn't consistent with my mixtures. Anyway - 2 questions. 1) When spraying arcylic - should it look 'wet' off the gun. If it does it would be a really slow pass and a thick layer of paint?? 2) Do you sand between the final arcylic coat and the clear? Thanks for your help Quote
reverendzed Posted April 3, 2010 Author Posted April 3, 2010 Hi Zrevival, one of the first things to check is that the hole in the lid of your cup is clear that will often change your spray results as it will reduce the amount of paint that is fed through due to creating a vacuum. Usually the sandiness is a result of too much air & not enough paint or painting from too far away. (make sure you thin 1 1/2 thinner to 1 part Acrylic e.g 150ml thinner to 100ml color) You need to have your gun about 7" from your surface and yes it should lay down wet. Your first coat should be lighter to act a s a key or tack coat however subsequent coats need to be double header coats which means that you are overlapping your spray pattern by 1/2. You can only sand before clear coat if it is a non metallic color, if you have sandiness in your color coat then yes wet sand, dry off and then clear coat you should get a real nice wet coat laid down for the clear. Hope that helps. Rev. Quote
reverendzed Posted April 3, 2010 Author Posted April 3, 2010 Today's update for new interior. These are not the seats I'm using they are just for a test fit with the carpet etc. Rev. Quote
zrevival Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Yep - that really does help Have been trolling the web for the past day - and that is best explanation of the process i've had yet! I'll be giving the guards a light wetsand tomorrow and i'll lay down another couple of coats. I'll let you know how i go Cheers K Quote

reverendzed Posted April 10, 2010 Author Posted April 10, 2010 Thanks Hayden, couldn't have done it without all your help! Hopefully interior will be finished by next weekend. Plans are for Motor to go in on Anzac day! Rev. Quote
FuzzyDropbear Posted April 11, 2010 Posted April 11, 2010 Good work Rev, seats look fantastic. Was there much fiddling around to get them mounted in? Quote
reverendzed Posted April 11, 2010 Author Posted April 11, 2010 Hi Rob the seats were easy! I had to drill an extra hold in the seat base for the rails but that was about it - I may have to do a little bit of filing in the seat mounting brackets in the car but it's the easiest after market fit i've done. Rev. Quote
C.A.R. Posted April 12, 2010 Posted April 12, 2010 I've been waiting for all the interior shots to be posted & I gotta Say mate - it just looks AWESOME. The contrast between the Black & Yell... err, Orange really makes it all 'jump' Quote
NZeder Posted April 12, 2010 Posted April 12, 2010 Looks excellent Rev you have done a great job I did not know the fuse box was in a different location on the early 260z vs the later 260z. Here is a pic of showing were the fuse box is located on my later 76 shell 2 seater (red arrow shows the location) the shape of the panel is such so it has the cut outs for the mounting ears of the box. Anyway the car is looking great - love the colour too is it custom colour like Adam's or is it 920 Safari Gold? Quote
peter t Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Looking good mate. My pc died and have not been able to access site for a week. In regards to the paint My paint has a small amount of fleck in and need some advise. Can I lay about three top coats on wet and let dry and rub back and apply some more colour and rub than apply the clear acrylic. How many coats of clear can I apply after that before polishing? I hope I am doing this in the correct order if not let me know please. Thanks. Quote
reverendzed Posted April 16, 2010 Author Posted April 16, 2010 Got the dash in the other day and seats properly mounted, hatch hardware on...now for the last bit of interior tomorrow and motor next week! Rev. P.s did I tell you that I'm over it! Quote
