It's great to be at home for the weekend.

Went for a MTB ride early today at Stromlo.

post-103565-0-67288900-1497086779_thumb.jpg

Then walked to the lockal shops for a coffee. Then to the shed for the rest of the day apart from putting a big chunk of meat in the oven to slow roast for dinner.

I had managed to finish off a few small items during the week so put them back together and into storage for re assembly time. I had painted the undertray, I made along with the gear stick rubber surround and the accelerator pedal assembly.

Then I sorted out some wiring, drilling a hole or two.

Finally I have a hydraulic scissor jack that I fitted in the luggage area.

We use these jacks in the rally cars. They are Japanese and great quality. Also quite light for what they are and very effective. They are bigger than the original jacks so they don't fit into the tool box. After a bit of back and forth I decided to mount it at the rear on the right hand side. Should be nice and handy so probably will never use it.

I also managed to pick up a set of rear suspension hanger bolts. One of the ones in my car has damaged threads so will get replaced with this one.

It's so good to be back in the shed working on the Z. A few more hours tomorrow.

What an idiot. Why would you go to all that trouble to build an acid dip tank when you could have taken the shell to numerous places which strip paint!

Because nothing removes paint better than 100% chlorine, ya dork.

Yes Richard they are very slim in the collapsed position I can measure it if you like. You can get then from here http://global.rakuten.com/en/store/wattsu/item/dpj-850dx/. We get them via Alex http://www.alex-motorsports.co.jp as they sponsor one of our Japanese friends Rally cars.

That looks nice Jeff. I can see you sitting in there drinking a Pina Colada on a hot afternoon. The project should be worth some brownie points.

All the suspension and drive train is back out. Many holes have been drilled, nutserts installed, threads repaired and a long list compiled of things to be done. Back on the rotisserie for what should be the last time. I'm very glad I took the time to carry out a dry build as it would have been disappointing to be doing this after the shell was painted.

Big weekend, very enjoyable to have the time in the shed.

Progress has continued as time permitted over the last few weeks. Once the shell was back on the rotisserie unrequired holes have been filled a list of items that were identified during the dry build have been addressed. These were mainly damaged threads or holes that are required that had been removed during rust repairs. The POR-15 on the underside was lightly sanded as it had been on the car for a reasonable time. A masking paper stand was purchased via eBay for $55. You honestly could not go close the making this for triple the price. It has made the next job very easy.

Today I cleaned the sanded area and applied a coat of #8 U Pol etch primer. The next job will be the seam seal then masking off and the application of the underbody coating.

What type (& brand) of underbody coating are you looking to use?

Thanks, Andrew.

Andrew I'm planing on using the POR-15 OEM Bed Liner. It's water based so is more convent to use than the solvent based products.

Today I have sealed the seams with Sikafkex and painted the items that will be masked off so they don't get any bed liner on them. Like the suspension mounting points, brake line brackets etc. I had to have the heater on in the shed today so it was warm enough to use products and for them to start to set.

Did you get Blind Harry to apply the seam sealer?!

Yep. I had my glasses off ;-).

It looks horrible in the photos but it's actually not that bad in reality.

Before I used a short brush with solvent to push it into the joints and smooth it out it looked very sexy but would not have been very effective.

Well almost Dave, it has paint under it now so should not rust.

Coat of primer to reduce the colour contrast and it looks ok.

The mornings have been very cold and the days have not been warming up much either so the heaters have been getting a good work out. I managed to have a bit of a digger last weekend on my MTB and have been hobbling around since, very painful but I will survive.

I applied the underbody last weekend (after the cash). I was going to use the POR-15 waterbased tub liner but after chatting to a mate and the fellas at the local auto paint suppliers I ended up using the 3M equivalent. It was also water based and very simple to apply and it looks and feels good.

During this week I sanded back the POR-15 in the engine bay and cleaned up the bumper bar mounting brackets and tow eyelets ready for a coat of black enamel.

So today I undercoated the shell in front of the windscreen and painted the above listed parts.

I also used the forum search function to investigate door hinges and after reading a few posts by @PeterAllen and @KatoKid gathered all the information and have them all striped. So after I make a visit to the local Nissan dealer tomorrow to order the parts required I will be ready to re assemble them with no slop anymore. The search function is such a handy thing!!

Going to paint them Scott.

They will eventually be painted the car colour so no need to get them coated.

Looking good Jeff, keep at it. I will be back on mine again soon. Looking forward to watching you move towards colour.

Thanks Jeff. I'm looking forward to watching you get back on track.

Door hinges are all cleaned up washed and had a bath in metal ready. So almost ready to re assemble. Once A good friend who runs a motorsports prep business and a machine shop makes me some new door control rollers. As you can see the old ones have s nice groove in them so getting some new ones.

I should get a few more things ticked off this weekend.

Late start yesterday as it was just to cold and foggy to be motivated.

When the sun finally came out I pulled the bumper bars out and striped them. Then shaped a dolly out of some hard wood to remove a few dings. Does not look like much but took some time and was very messy. There was many years of gunk and rust on them, particularly the rear bar. I removed the original number plate mounts from the front bar and the side mounting brackets from the rear bar that had all been previously butchered and will make some replacement parts this week. Rocky was on hand to supervise as usual. The day finally warmed up enough to also get a coat of primer on the door hinges. More time in the shed this afternoon.

Today I pressed in the bushes and partially assembled the door hinges. Once I pick up the new control rollers I will finish the assemble and the hinges will be ready to go. Then I move back to the bumper bars. Rather than repairing the rear side beackets I decided to make new ones. Did this and welded them on and carried out a test fit. This needed to be done before I finish off the rear quarter panels so today was as good a time as any. The number plate brackets had been cut off the front bar so I had no choice but to make new ones. Made these up and welded them on in the original location. Then had a beer.
