This car mechanical is very sound and runs like dream. Professional overhaul on the engine to get it back to its original condition. Body panels are very straight. The paint shows signs of wear. AFAIK, they were standard on all years.

Whichever is chosen, the main area to be addressed is that of hidden rust in the "enclosed" parts of the chassis, body and roof (gutter) areas. Yes you can cut out what has penetrated through and is now visible however, my biggest fear is what can't be seen. If I was doing a high end restoration (or buying one) I would want to use a borescope to inspect the body shell cavities completely.

I suspect that in most cases the available budget and time as well as your own ability plays a big role in which direction is taken.

Also, as it is from an air conditioner/heater system the firewall piping is different to non air con models as it will have a vacuum operated valve on it.

Yep, and as almost all of this is hidden then as long as it is structurally sound then all is good. Maybe just cutting out the buckled sections and rewelding in sections is the best option. Likewise panel beating other areas and skimming with some filler will be suitable.
