luvemfast Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 Let me spell it out then Make a mold out of it and make a carbon fibre one Quote
Sirpent Posted April 22, 2011 Author Posted April 22, 2011 Let me spell it out then Make a mold out of it and make a carbon fibre one Ohhhhhhhhh OK, guess I could but it would be pointless as this thing is over worked with welds and reinforcement and as strong as I would like it and apart from the trying to then replicate all the mounts on the rear would be a pain. And I know Rev Dave will probably look down on the fact that I took time out today to work on these mods, but couldn't help myself, and the God Lord must of been OK with it as it went so smoothly and effortlessly, so I started to weld up and align the console to the fascia and this is the result before darkness made it impossible to do any more. Cheers John Quote
reverendzed Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 Looks great John...and no I wouldn't look down on you, that's for the religious people, the same ones that scolded Jesus for healing on the sabbath! I'm just glad that you took the time to consider what the day is about! Bless you man, Rev. Quote
Sirpent Posted April 23, 2011 Author Posted April 23, 2011 Thanks rev, for the compliment and absolution............. When you are all sick of seeing this mod, just shout out, in the meanwhile managed to get a load done this afternoon, I'd say by this time next week this will be all wrapped up. Just a few pics Cheers John Quote
MaygZ Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 John, looks very good mate. Might just be the angle of the photos, but will it interfere with grabbing 1st or 3rd? Quote
Sirpent Posted April 23, 2011 Author Posted April 23, 2011 John, looks very good mate. Might just be the angle of the photos, but will it interfere with grabbing 1st or 3rd? Not if you run an AMG Speedshift auto..............LOL The AMG set up allows for the shifter to be positioned basically anywhere as it fly by wire, the shifter utilises a stand alone unit that sends commands to the auto's actuators to grab gears, if you were to run a Zed box and L6 Ive worked out the you would need a short shifter, the 2DIN fascia finishes around the leading edge of the shifter boot on the console. Cheers John Quote
MaygZ Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Sorry mate. Classic case of 19th century thinking in a 21st century car. Quote
C.A.R. Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Looking good Ovvy Baby - certainly going to be different Quote
Sirpent Posted April 25, 2011 Author Posted April 25, 2011 Sorry mate. Classic case of 19th century thinking in a 21st century car. No problems mate, but you will get accustomed to it once you get to drive it for a stint at the cannonball I'm sure. In the mean while, decided that this console wouldn't be complete without an Ipod / Iphone dock station and cradle, so went hunting through my parts collection and found an EA Falcon dash fascia which after some brainstorming and dissecting in my head got the chop and weld treatment. At least this way I can have all the music I want while making sure the Ipod doesn't fly around at 200+ Kph between Coober Pedy and Alice LOL And in the last pic it looks like it been set a bet side ways, just to avail fears it isn't, its actually the plastic molding of the original console that's out but this will be rectified, tomorrow I hope to find a nice set of power window switches to mount ahead of the dock and between them and the shifter will be the engine start button. Cheers John P.S. sorry if this is overly anal. Quote
garvice Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 Looking good mate, but that looks more like glue then weld? Plastic welding is pretty easy if you can get your hands on the gear. Also, for the window switches, my plan has always been to use toyota switches (I think they are the nicest looking ones and best feel that I have come across). Though I have always thought I would grab two drivers switches so that both windows would be auto up and down. Quote

Gravice, I can assure you its not glue, just the rough welds which flare due to the flash and lighting, once sanded back as in previous pics they will flatten out. I agree Toyota has some great switches, I'm looking at using Toyota Soarer switches that have a small LED built in as per the pic attached, just need to find black ones but I know of a place that wrecks them as I used to have an SC400 which I was forever hunting parts down for. Cheers John P.S. Im using a $5.00 Super Cheap soldering iron LOL Quote
garvice Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 Ah, damn optical illusions. Keep up the good work, and yes those are the switches I meant, haven't seen them with the lights before though (or haven't noticed). Quote

peter t Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 I pods, getto blasters etc, who needs that crap in a Z. You will never hear anything that may go wrong at 200k. Craig Lowndes doesn't have that stuff in his car even today. You just need two windows down {air con} duct tape over the cheese and kisses mouth and foot to the metal. Now that is a cannonball run. Love you work John. Quote
peter t Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 You won't hear me coming but I hope to be there. Quote
Sirpent Posted April 28, 2011 Author Posted April 28, 2011 Ahhhhhhhhhhh the madness continues. Had to give some thought as to how to mount the new fascia and also how the console fascia and shifter garnish would be treated as far as trimming, then came to the realisation that it wouldn't work as I had it, so got the cutting disc and chopped the previously mounted and welded lower 2DIN surround out and mounted and welded it to the fascia, this will now help with the mounting and mean that I will now have a 1 piece fascia which curves down into the console where it will meet the shifter garnish, the idea now is to have the console and dash dressed in stitched suede and the new combined fascia and shifter garnish finished in a low bake gloss black, I'm thinking Holdens Panther Mica black. Cheers John Quote
RBZ 260 Posted April 29, 2011 Posted April 29, 2011 John you on fire im gone for few days and there u gone mad, made an iphone dock, redone the climate fascia WOW. Looking good mate. one of a kind love it. Quote
Sirpent Posted April 29, 2011 Author Posted April 29, 2011 Cheers Johnny, Love your work also Picked up some Lexus switches today out of a ES300 (I think) problem was both RH doors were gone so had to settle for the front and rear passanger door garnishes and switches. A bit of calculation as to positioning, some chopping and welding and now have a unified switch panel (needs a bit more surface prep but ran out of daylight) which will be welded into the final center console gear shift garnish. These incorporate LED's for night time location. Cheers John Quote
NZeder Posted April 30, 2011 Posted April 30, 2011 Hey John were you at with the electric windows motors/regulator setup? I see a number of guys in the US of A have had good success with using the stock regulator and the SPAL universal kits. Quote
garvice Posted April 30, 2011 Posted April 30, 2011 I see a number of guys in the US of A have had good success with using the stock regulator and the SPAL universal kits. Got to be a better way then this though, something like a factory setup with an integrated overcurrent setup or limit switch (to detect when the window is all the way down). This is another one of the hundreds of projects I have thought of, hoping someone solves it before I get around to it (hint hint John, ha). Quote
