I think it's had a bit of a rough life

Hi, I'm new to the forum and was wondering if anyone has looked at this car or has any observations to make, I'm pretty keen to buy it if everything stacks up.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

I'd go inspect it in person, get a good look underneath it and verify the 20K of monies spent on drive train work if possible. I was initially surprised it was for sale thing long given how quickly other cars have sold.

So that may indicate a few things worth closer inspection.

Video here of: HS30 103687

It looks good in the video, but I would use previous comments on here as a barometer on it's overall quality.

It's now up to $35k on eBay, so at least a couple of folks want it.

Thanks to everyone for their responses, I'm looking for a good 240/260z basis to build a tarmac rally car having run an mgbgt for the last 7 years. The green 240 would have been ok at face value but for the question mark regarding chassis alignment.

Does anyone have any knowledge of the red 260z on MY105?. It ticks the boxes from cams logbook perspective along with cage and seats etc. but looks a little tired and has been on the market for a long time.

Living in Tassie makes inspection a bit more challenging so any first hand insight is appreciated.

Thanks

Andrew

I messaged the owner for more info on the engine and the only thing he mentioned was that its a recoed l28. Hard to tell from photos but for me it looks like a $30,000 car with a 70k price tag. Even if it was restored to concourse standard I couldn't see it being worth more than 40-45 without the original engine. Someone please correct me If I am wrong though.

Pretty sure a couple of the recent 60k cars had L28s.  There's a thread on here but matching numbers is not really applicable, as not all Z's (particularly early ones) have compliance plates to tell you what number they had from the factory anyway

Compliance plate doesn't state engine number, the Engine Bay ID plate that has the chassis code and engine details on it does. But only in some markets, for example the French and Japanese markets just had the engine type eg: L20, L24, S20 etc.. no actual number.

Examples here:

http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/14549-how-original-is-original-is-original-really-original-must-go-deeper/

In terms of it's impact on values, that's for debate. I personally don't think it's THAT big a deal, but a matching numbers car will always be able to eek out a bit more value for the correct buyer I'm sure. Does it impact how much you enjoy your car? Probably not.

I don't get people. You're trying to charge a premium price for something and you get your two year old to take the photos.

Agree, but from the photos it looks like it could be a good example.

1971 240z on Gumtree http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/byron-bay/cars-vans-utes/1971-datsun-240z-coupe/1115161169

Price: $45,000.00

Location: Byron Bay, NSW

For sale is my 1971 Datsun 240z. Overall the car is close to original and has only had minor upgrades over the years. Mechanically the car is running a Stewart Wilkins rebuild l28 with original 240z Su carbies, extractor and larger exhaust which has a nice note, 280zx gearbox and a rebuilt r180 diff,

The exterior still presents quit well, there are a few blemishes in the paint as it's an older paint job, we are yet to find any rust in the car and overall is relatively straight and all the panels align well. The car is sitting on lowered suspension and period correct Hotwire wheels which still have good tread. The bumpers are in good condition and the chrome still presents well.

Inside everything in there and is neat and tidy, the dashingly has 1 split and all the instruments work, the seats have been recovered in leather and have no crcksor splits. The centre console is in great condition with no cracks and the carpets still present well. The main upgrade is a CD player and two speakers in the back being have been placed behind the seats and not cut into the plastic.

Overall this 240z would be great club or a weekend cruiser as it drives and goes really well and does not need anything spending on it. Inspections are welcome.

Up for sale is my 71 240z project, Full NSW registration (8 months remaining). Provided, is a folder full of receipts of what has been done to the car. Below is a write up of the main sections and a link to more photos of the various stages of the car.

Body:

The body is straight, clean and presents well. It has had a bare metal respray in orange, repair work to the floor pans, rear arches and tailgate/ beaver panel (by the previous owner/s).

Mechanical:

The L26 requires fine tuning/attention, while cold it has a flat spot/hesitation around 2000rpm. Once up at operating temperature, it drives well and has had a few outings to Wiseman’s ferry / Royal nasho. It has a gear box / tail shaft from a 260z and still feels nice and tight. New inserts and king springs 30mm lower all around, the front springs will be replaced with 50mm lower, as it still sits quite high (in my opinion) or provided to new owner. New exhaust from the extractors back 2” has a nice note to it, custom painted midnight purple Rota RKR’s 15 x 8 and 15 x 9 w/new tires.

Interior:

Tidy, dash has been replaced with a refurbished one, all electrics work (except the clock!). New carpet kit installed, with dash mat and rubber cargo mat. Still has the diamond trim on the tunnel rear strut tower but the replacement carpet (new) will be provided including; waterproof underlay. The console is from a later series Z and as such, been modified to fit.

What’s left/Needed?

• Door cards, current one’s are on loan

• Seats have been steam cleaned but have rips

• Grill

• Handful of rubbers replaced and other bits around the car

• Heater box

• Upper hatch panel

Other items provided

• Standard wheels

• Tinted headlight covers – not fitted

• IMSA 3 piece spoiler – not fitted

I’m not interested in swaps, as the money from this will be used to kick start another project. Negotiable within reason but there is a minimum offer set to filter out low ballers.

I am free most evenings from 5pm onwards or with enough notice Sat / Sun. Email only at this stage, number will be provided to serious buyers.
