peter t Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 I thought the Cars For Sale classifieds on VicZCar forum were for local members who are selling their vehicles (Z-cars as it is a Z forum) and this post dedicated to local third party sites sales. Some of the points you mentioned Gav are personal and out of context. Please don't be offended, I just don't see the logic in posting International eBay sales to simply monitor global prices for personal intrigue and marketing statistics on a local member forum car sales thread, just as how Trading Post also do not see the logic in doing the same. I go along with this. I really don't give a shit what cars are selling for in the rest of the world but always eager for a bargain here in OZ. Lets keep it OZZIE. Quote
Mr Camouflage Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 You can import a LHD ZED for about $1500 Really? - freight and insurance (for the transport of the goods to Australia); - customs duties, GST and LCT, if applicable; - storage and delivery charges; - logistic services providers' charges; - customs brokers' charges; - entry processing charges; - steam cleaning for quarantine purposes; - other wharf and transport charges; Would have thought all that would add up to a bit more than $1500? Administrators gav240z Posted November 28, 2014 Author Administrators Posted November 28, 2014 This is the quote I received from Irony Lady Imports. I was looking to import a clean US car that came up a while back. Here is the quote breakdown I received. Hi Craig / Kristian, I was recently watching this car. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Datsun-Z-Series-240Z-series-1-AWESOME-240Z-240-z-RUST-FREE-JDM-Classic-Low-Mile-Collector-EXCELLENT-/161224166741 It's a little rough in places, but otherwise looks solid and honest for it's age. I am wondering if it's possible to tell me what it would cost to bring in such a car to Australia? For compliance I'm aware that the rear lights might need changing to the amber indicator lights for compliance but it doens't require conversion to RHD being that it's over 30 years old. Are you able to let me know what it's roughly likely to cost? Good morning Gavin, If you choose to proceed with this then we can certainly help with the process. We have great shipping rates arranged from the US at the moment and know the process well. Compliance should not be too hard as there were not a lot of rules that needed to be met back in 1971. You are correct about the rear lights and also the headlights will need to be swapped to RHD versions although this is cheap and easy being standard round lights which can be sourced from most local car parts stores. Conversion of the car to RHD will not be necessary. -- shipping costs -- USD $1,350 ocean freight & export customs insurance up to 1.8% of vehicle value -- Australian import costs -- $1,350 customs, quarantine & port fees ($500 Quarantine cleaning if required) $0 import duty $1,630 GST -- road registration costs -- $880 ADR compliance $135 roadworthy (blue slip) $750 CTP insurance (green slip) $420 registration (12 months) $620 stamp duty -- other costs -- $50 import approval application $990 Iron Lady Imports fee ('A' Package) This is allowing for our full 'A' Package assuming you wanted us to take care of everything, and also trying to over allow a little on the costs to give a really fair idea of real world expenses. Let me know if this seems like something worth doing and I will be very happy to help as I personally love these cars and miss the one I used to drive about 25 years ago! Regards, Craig Be careful of other vendors as they are not always upfront with the total costs involved of purchasing a car and getting it registered here. Quote

Please don't be offended, I just don't see the logic in posting International eBay sales to simply monitor global prices for personal intrigue and marketing statistics on a local member forum car sales thread, just as how Trading Post also do not see the logic in doing the same. Is it not important to know what your car is worth, so you can properly insure it if something happens to it? I had to debate with insurance how much HS30 000150 was worth. Showing them the eBay auction of HLS30 000189 recently helped change their mind. Don't get me started on the Trading Post and their logic, they probably still think cars should be sold via their printed paper. There is a reason Carsales.com.au is #1 in Australia. Besides they cater to every car, not specialised vehicles like the S30z - which IS a global market of interested buyers. I've had people contact me from all over the world looking for an S30z. If where going to post American zeds, at least lets choose nice examples to admire... Those are train wrecks ! We have enough rusty zeds on this site as it is Train wrecks yes, but early cars and there appears to be a market for those in particular at the minute. I do post clean US examples also. Some of them are going for big money. I go along with this. I really don't give a shit what cars are selling for in the rest of the world but always eager for a bargain here in OZ. Lets keep it OZZIE. Factor in the cost of restoring a car in Australia with local wages and then compare a restored example in the US with all the correct factory parts on it. Even after you import, convert to RHD etc.. you're likely to get a bargain and for those that don't want to spend the time restoring their S30z they have a turn key car ready to enjoy. it also takes about 2 seconds, when looking for a car, to see that the steering wheel is on the 'wrong' bloody side , and you can move onto more productive things like listening to some doof doof. That seemed to be the way I saw it also, like where would I draw the line with international S30z's? Would I only post RHD foreign cars like those in Japan or NZ? Or should it only be Australian cars? How about a Fairlady Z in Australia? Or should it work on distance? Like a RHD car in the UK would be excluded but a NZ car ok? Honestly I don't see the big deal, I thought I was doing people a favour posting these cars along with images so that others looking to buy can go through the thread and see how values have changed and know what is a good deal and what to jump on? If you go back to the start of this thread you'll see how values have changed. That's a pretty powerful tool and much better than Bloody RedBook values which seem to have stayed static since 1995. If it really divides the community perhaps I can start a separate thread for foreign S30z's for sale? Quote

I really don't give a shit what cars are selling for in the rest of the world but always eager for a bargain here in OZ. Lets keep it OZZIE. I see what everyone means, although I am of the same view as Peter and would also prefer a separate thread for the international sales. Occasionally it's nice to see what they sell for but to me 'cars for sale etc.' should be in Australia only. How about 'Cars for sale OS etc.' then anything far and wide is fair game? Quote
cracker Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 Interesting debate, and personally, I don't care either way. However, just because I love to contribute... As someone who was trolling forums and classifieds daily until I found my zed, it would be a little frustrating (still interesting though) to find an updated thread with a foreign car - certainly not to the point at which I would complain, however... Currently, as an owner, I find the US (and other foreign) listings/markets mildly interesting, mainly because I enjoy the fact my car is going up in value around the world (and we can probably all accept that US prices/trends are very useful indications, if not reliable). I certainly do not "monitor" my car's value, however. I also don't think there is a right or a wrong answer to this debate (endless discussion, perhaps!) - this thread does not stipulate that it should be local listings only, it is simply a presumption that has come to be over time (I think). As prices rise, importation becomes viable, and as such the foreign classifieds are more relevant. It does seem, however, that creating a separate thread for foreign classifieds would appease all. For someone who is interested in the US and beyond, an extra click is no bother - and for those who would prefer to see only local car listings the solution is even more simple. None of us should lose sight of the fact that we are debating an incredibly trivial matter - we all love zeds to some degree and seeing classified ads from everywhere just helps with perspective. When an OS ad is posted, it's generally very clear anyway. My two cents, and apologies for potentially fuelling the fire. Quote

RB26DETT Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 How long is a piece of string Craig? There is some on the bottom of the fender, bottom of door, where the hatch meets the tail light and where the roof is. Best to see in person and judge for yourself. Quote

Administrators gav240z Posted December 4, 2014 Author Administrators Posted December 4, 2014 Cuong - do you think the rear hatch on 575 is the original fitted to the car from factory? Just asking because although your car has the choke and throttle knob console it would appear it's lacking the vents in the rear hatch. It looks like it was complied in April 1971. HS30 00150 was complied on Nov 1970, so in that small amount of time it looks like the vents in the hatch were possibly deleted? Quote
RB26DETT Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Hi Gav yes the hatch vents were not on #5 75. I have another 240z with the chassis number in the 300s and even that doesn't have the vents if I remember correctly. Quote

I have another 240z with the chassis number in the 300s and even that doesn't have the vents if I remember correctly. *Edit silly me, just noticed the 1/4 Z badges also, so yes must have come that way Very interesting, reading the US based sites it's always the first #500 that get talked about having the vents, but I think our market was different and I suspect like you say it might be cars under ~HS30 00300 that received the vents. Hence the curiosity and question. Funny it has the hot wire wheels (like my gold car) and the same rear view mirror - which is very Ford Falconish... Looks like it's been left alone and not too tampered with, just the way I like them. Rear lights look like they are in good condition too which is a bonus as NOS Koito stamped early S30z rear lights are often asking ~$2000 AU alone! Good luck with the sale, not that you'll need it I'm sure someone wants an early 240z. It's a great original colour also. Quote
RB26DETT Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Hi Gav, the original colour was actually blue. The mirrors I believe may be from a Ford Escort? Car got sold to the first person that viewed it for the full asking price. There is a huge interest and demand for Zeds all over Australia. Quote
