Perhaps if Alan is watching he can clarify if this is the same model that would have been used in Works Rally Cars in period?

Starting Bid is $800..

Halda Trip Master.

I'm fairly sure most of the works cars of the period would have used "twin masters" with two trip meters allowing one to be used for intervals and the other for cumulative distances. But happy to be corrected.

Talking only of Works 240Z rally cars here, but most of the 'early' cars were equipped with independently-driven pairs of Tripmasters. Usually one off each front wheel. Later (1972/3) cars often had Twinmasters.

If a crew had enough time with a car before an event and/or had used it previously, they might sometimes 'personalise' it a little more to the navigator's preference. That might even include changing type and position of navigator's gear. It all adds up to make such details a bit of a moving target, so best to view cars on a case-by-case basis and a bit of a moveable feast...

Alan in that same photo (I think it's 1 of yours), what is the flexible hose thing next to the trip master?

Is it some form of map light?

Posted (edited)

Yes, it's called a 'P. Light'. A bulb holder on the end of a flexible stalk and with a hood on it. I believe they originated in military aircraft.

From the same car:

Thanks Alan, I'm fascinated by all the switches and additions to the interior on the rally cars.

I have a couple of original TripMasters if anyone is interested in that "rally" look,

We called them Map lights, and ften strung a bit f black cloth to stop driver being distracted by glare f light while navigator does his thing.

Did plenty f rally map, and tulip, later pace ote navgating for many drivers.

Splash pan on eBay (item # 301791885326) - starting bid $50, located in Kogarah NSW,  ends 13 Nov, 2015 17:09:16 AEDST.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/240z-260z-under-engine-oil-pan-/301791885326?hash=item464432b80e:g:ajsAAOSwT5tWPEJq

It is listed as "240z 260z under engine oil pan", but it looks like it is actually a 280Z version with a large hole at the front for the radiator drain plug.

I believe that this type is also deeper than the 240Z/260Z type to accommodate the larger 280Z radiator.

I did a Google search and it seems that 280ZX splash pans are/were very different again.

Good couple of hours drive that 1, if it was non vented I'd go grab it.

240Z factory competition fiberglass hood scoop ULTRA rare 260Z 280Z look

I'm not so sure this was an OEM option for the S30z, but happy to be corrected? As far as I'm aware though it's not a factory part.

*Edit just found this link.

It seems like a North American dealer part designed for cars that may have experienced vapor lock with the later flat top style carbs.

http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/classic02d/50-1608 also available here for much cheaper.

Thanks, I neither love this appendage or loathe it, I'm somewhat in the middle. I think it would be more at home on an S30z with flares and that "fat" look. Than on a standard body S30z.

I do like the idea, but think in execution it's a bit sloppy. Too big a lump. A more subtle hood modification to improve cooling would be better. I guess Nissan eventually put the vents in the hood in later S30z's to achieve the same thing, but I don't like the look of the "260z" style vents. I've always felt they look cheap.

I'd probably opt for vented inspection flaps instead. Easier to replace and cheaper to modify than a good bonnet.

Thanks, yes I've seen those. But much too modern for my tastes.

I like something a bit more historic looking.

Here is a Ferrari 250 GTO bonnet with leather straps and perspex cover over a vent.

Funny enough it seems I'm not the only 1 who thought this was good on an S30z.
