+1 for Burt Bros

I have not used them myself, but they are highly regarded by the folks in the old Chev scene. Burt's specialise in classic car work.

Looks like they do quite a bit, including re-sleeving old cylinders. Might be able to save some of the original parts. Thanks :)

Hi George

The plating looks awesome, love the detail photos complete with ruler.

Looks like a few hours office time sorting them all out.

Can't wait to see the next update on the body work

Cheers

Wow George that is an awful lot of bits! I assume that it is basically every single fastener and plated component from one entire 240Z?

Can you give us an idea of how much that lot cost (when your wife and Walter aren't looking)?

Yep, and much better than many hours guessing what goes where without the photos.

When I started stripping the car I thought I was going overboard with the bagging and tagging even though I really wasn't that thorough to be honest. At this end of the job I wish I had taken more time bagging and tagging. Can't stress how important this is along with taking lots and lots of photos.

Me too on the body updates. Should see the car take a car-like form again. ^-^

No chance Ian - I wish that was all there was to the whole car. What you see there is all of the bits that could be saved and reused. Some were not original so I didn't bother with them and others were too far gone/unsafe/broken.

My first plating job cost $250 but that included some rather large bits. See more here: http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/11477-hs30-00019/?p=153978

The cost goes up at the platers if you have very small fiddly bits that they have to wire up which takes time. If all you need to do is some fasteners then it should cost about $100 to $150.

I dropped off some parts at the platers this past weekend and taking more in soon. This time we're doing a mix of yellow chromate on some fasteners and plain silver zinc on calipers and brake/clutch masters.

Great job mate.

How clean does everything need to be...ideally? Do the clean plater's clean everything in a hot tank of some kind or is it preferred that you supply everything as clean as possible already? I could media blast every piece before sending for plating but is this required or overkill?

Overkill and waste of time in most cases. They dip in some acid solution which does a great job and doesn't seem to damage rubbers or plastics (as long as they are in good condition to begin with). I haven't blasted anything in that lot.

With the latest lot I did sandblast the calipers as they had a lot of crud so it was more of a courtesy than a requirement.

Here is my assistant Walter inspecting the demisters. He checked them with a multimeter, was satisfied with the connections and proceeded to eat a feather stuck to the styrofoam.

Hey George,

I always thought you needed a specialist to fix these, but looking at these 2 resources.

You should be able to repair these if they have a broken connection somewhere.

Kylie and I are very proud to announce that she is pregnant with our first child. High five! :)

She is 12 weeks today and the due date is April 12 - a day after my birthday! I could not dream of a better birthday present. Incidentally, I first met Kylie on my birthday and I proposed to her on my birthday as well so it's a fitting date for our firstborn.

This, of course, presents some problems for the project but it's a very welcome problem. ^-^ Look out for a for sale ad in the near future...  :P

Big news and big changes, congratulations. I hope you're only joking about the for sale ad though? You are right?  ^-^

Thanks all. :)

Thanks for the clarification Pete. :P

I own an MX5 as some of you might recall. Can't see that one lasting too long. :-/

Gav, yeah, was kidding about selling. I imagine it'll sit in the garage a bit longer than planned but no, no plans to sell.

Congrats to you both, hope it all goes well.

I dare say that having a child is similar to owning a Z - hard work, lots of stress and expensive but a very rewarding experience. Best of luck.

I'm only really qualified to talk about the kids part...

Felicitations Kylie and George!

Build number K&G-00001 is moving down the production line  :D

And when the time comes, you already have a contact for bronze plating of baby shoes!
