  1. Hi, Cozza is right. Resistor coils are actually a 9 volt coil but still called a 12volt coil. The resistor drops the voltage from 12V to about 9V to allow the coil to run cooler and also prolong the life of the points. When the key is turned to the start position this allows a full 12 volts through the ignition switch direct to the coil for extra voltage for starting. When the key is released this circuit is disconnected and the wire through the resistor continues to feed about 9V to the coil. I use a crane 7000 electronic ignition in my 260Z with a Bosch GT40R coil and resistor. Hope this helps. David

    Weird miss

Hi, The bottom pictured plug is running leaner than the top plug. You should richen it up. A colour tune kit comes in handy for this. Also I noticed that you say you have trouble reving to 8000rpm. ( Bit of overkill for a street car). With a points distributor you may be experiencing point bounce as well with the higher revs. Combined with the leaner carb, it could be causing the miss. I would set the dissy to about 16 degrees BTDC with the vacuum disconnected and set all in timing no higher than 34 degrees. You will have to modify the dissy to limit mechanical advance for this. 16 degrees initial +18 degrees mechanical =34 degrees total. A reasonable starting point. David

    Rising coolant temp

Hi, Without the IR gun just get the engine warm then switch off. Place hand at the top of the radiator on the finned section, then place at the bottom of the finned section. If it has a build up of sediment in the bottom restricting flow you will be able to feel a difference in the temp in your hand. David
  4. Hi Gav, I have tried ordering those lights from the zstore twice over the last 6 months and they have been unable to supply on both occasions. David

  6. Hi, Glad that you have it sorted. Who is the Arizona Z car dealer in Adelaide . Is that Chris Ferguson. I know he is on the Arizona Z web site using Dave's parts. Is there a website. Cheers David.
  7. No. That's a Manta Ray.
  8. Hi, All parts can be bought through Stewart Wilkins Motorsport in Sydney. I resently purchased a spare 72 degree cam and springs, rockers and spring retainers were also supplied . David
  9. Hi Peter, I have a couple of small drain holes in the bottom of mine. 3 mm. When the Perspex was not sealed to the body, I had trouble with moisture getting behind the lens. Now that they are sealed I don't have problems in the rain. I figured that with everything sealed and the heat from the lights, a breather hole would not hurt. David
  10. Hi, I would be reluctant to buy these carbs. They say "Weber type replacement carb". These are not genuine Weber carbs. I think that they are an Asian copy. The manifold is Redline to make the package look appealing. Genuine carbs are from Weber Australia in Melbourne. Buyer Beware. David.
  11. Hey Gav, The Aussie author Matthew Reilly lives in Sydney and drives a DeLorean. May have been him. For anyone after fast action books try Matthew Reilly. Scarecrow series are great. I have read all of his books and am eagerly waiting for the next. David
  12. The flasher can has a set of points similar to the distributor. Get the electronic replacement unit. I replaced mine years ago with the electronic one because the original can started flashing the lights slower. The longer that they were on the slower they got till they would stop working. David
  13. Welcome aboard. Great story. Sounds like you have been lucky with the prangs with no personal injuries. Now go and buy a lottery ticket. Keep on with the adventure. David
  14. There is a Mallory Unilite Distributor on ebay at the moment for $350 plus $15 post Australia wide. Ballast resistor required. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mallory-Unilite-Distributor-4763901-Nissan-240z-260z-280z-2-4L-2-6L-2-8L-/201086603744?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ed1b211e0
  15. Hi, I usually spray them with CRC and wrap with cling wrap, then wrap in cardboard for a bit more protection if storing for any length of time. Store laid horizontal because if stored on its end and knocked over you can bend the crank. Get the crank polished before using, to take out any imperfections. David
  16. I have a brand new dual pick-up coil, transistor type distributor for the 240z auto Datsun that I had bought off Don Potters wife in the USA. I had thought that it might be good for my 260z but the dual circuits are only for the advance and retard of ignition timing for the automatic gearbox. There's a picture on page 78 of the Haynes Datsun repair manual. It's something different David
  17. I agree with Jason. My new engine parts came from DSI and Eiji was very helpful in our phone conversations with advise. David.
  18. I'm going the other direction for price. 49 years with the same family. $65 Million
  19. If he gets $37,000 for his car I might have to consider putting mine on the market. I am also partial to the silver 250 SWB Ferrari. David
  20. Hi Lurch, Thanks for showing a picture of you next project. Even with your talents you may have to let this one go, unless you have a spare 25 years. David
  21. Great photo. Question for those in the know. "What is in the cardboard boxes in the backs of the 240Z's?" Please keep the old pictures coming. David

Hi Gavin, KKSZ is on the money. 40 year old engines collect a bit of crap in the galleries especially if they have been sitting for years like this block. When hot tanked all of the residual rubbish should come out. ( Page 13 of How to Modify your Nissan and Datsun OHC Engine). The slide hammer makes life easier. Drill and tap with a 6mm thread, attach the slide hammer and Bobs your uncle. The 1/4 NPT plugs that I bought are 10mm long, which is perfect because it is approx. 12mm from the front of the block to the No1 main Bearing oil passage. Cheers David.

Hi Peter, Yes I like Holley, Weber, Blondes, Mikuni, Brunettes, Dellorto, OER and even Fuel injection. Some more parts arrived this week while I was away with work. Today I started to remove the oil gallery plugs and tapping 1/4 NPT threads. When I can find my air grinder I will start prepping the block with removing any casting ridges etc. David

Hi Gav, I had looked at the Vintage Performance web site and mentioned it to Eiji. Apparently they have used a picture of his setup without his permission and he was not happy, as he had never heard of that company. If you decide to go this way with your engine speak to Eiji first as he can supply anything you want. David.

Roberto, Shhh. It's something a bit different in style and size to what is currently being used at the moment by the majority car owners. If it works I will post pictures once it has been dyno tested. If not, then I won't have embarrassed myself in front of the fellow members. Then I will change to something more conventional. I will say however, that a few guys in the USA are using them on race cars with success. David
