Hello James, I had a similar problem when I went with 300mm rotors from Hopper Stoppers. 16" wheels were recommended and cleared fine, but the tyre choice (width wise) is not as great as the 17" tyres. If I could do it again I would go with the 17" wheels. David.

Hello Guys, I have just purchased a distributor off ebay as a spare for a 260Z. The dizzy is in good condition but the number is different from my existing dizzy. The part number is D6A5-03, but this is not listed in the Haynes manual. Any ideas what it is off, or does anyone have a list of Datsun numbers. I have tried searching online for the numbers with no luck. It has a single point set and is taller and wider than the D609-56A that is on my 260Z. Regards David

Cool Rev, Worth taking five minutes to check this out. Today is not just a day off work. Stay safe and have a good weekend. David

Hi Guys, I also am using Penrite HPR 30. Where I live the summer temperatures are above 40 degrees and I want maximum protection. If I were living in a colder climate I would be using the HPR 15 (semi synthetic) if the engine was either rebuilt or in good condition. These are my thoughts for a street car. Happy and safe Easter everyone. David.

Hello Peter, Environmentally friendly burnout. Go Green. The car looks terrific. Love the colour. David.

Hi Gareth, I haven't fitted the restrictor as I don't have a race car yet. From what I understand the restrictor slows the flow of water and the thermostat keeps the engine at an optimum temp of 190 degrees. All the parts I have been collecting have been for later use when the occasion arises. One of the most interesting parts I purchased was a Dual point electronic distributor for an automatic Zed for $80.00. Brand new in the box but 30 odd years old. Anyway thats enough as we are getting away from the welsh plug issue. Regards David.

Hi Guys, The late Don Potter ( D.L.Potter Engineering ) had some innovative Zed car accessories available for performance engines. A few months ago a lot of new (old) components were for sale from mamabears lair in the USA on ebay. One of the items that I purchased was the Don Potter water restrictor and the instructions stated that it was to be used with a 190 degree thermostat to make the modification effective. This was used in racing cars because apparently the engines ran better at a higher temp. Regards David

When I was converting my 260Z to the Ferrari 250GTO body kit my mates nicknamed me Enzo. I don't get called that anymore. Maybe time for a change. David.

G'Day Mate, I think at this stage you need to have a good sit down and think about this engine. I know money is limited so you need a few options. From what I can see in the photos, the bore is glazed and top of the pistons have oil /carbon residue. This could be caused by bad rings in a worn bore or valve guide seals. Valves have contacted the pistons and all valves could be bent. The water galleries look to be full of gunk. The head and cam setup needs to be addressed but you don't know if there are problems with the bottom end as well. To get the car on the road again I would probably suggest getting a complete cheap motor off one of the members and take the time to rebuilt this motor at some other time when cash is available. I would hate to see you spend money and refit the head only to find other problems. Put pen to paper and work out the pro's and cons of different options and what suits you financially. Regards David.

Turn signal/Indicator won't blink during low revs
Enzo replied to wildwildwhoosh's topic in Electrical systems
Hi Whoosh, I had the same problem with my 260z. The turn flash relay has points like in a distributor. Theses wear out causing the indicators to slow down or stop when hot. You just have to replace the old unit with an electronic flasher unit. This is a straight plug-in. The old unit in my 260z was located up above the fusebox. It is the round cylinder with 2x pins. Bit of a pain to get at, but the electronic flasher unit picked up from the local auto electrician fixed the problem. Hope this helps. Regards David. -
Hello Bullzed, It seem to be an ongoing problem with your camshaft and head. Pulling the head and getting a reputable mechanic to check it out is the way to go. I would like to suggest a few points to bare in mind with the rebuild. ..Rockers, camshafts and lash pads have a run in period when new as they wear together. This creates a matching bond between the surfaces. If for example a secondhand replacement rocker was fitted it would have a different wear pattern to its surface and would not mate up to the camshaft lobe causing prematurewear. I know it's added expence but I would suggest getting a complete cam, rocker, lash pad and spring setup, and also getting a good head expert to set it up right. The other option is to buy a good complete secondhand hand head from one of the members. .....I am in my 50's and as Salty suggested the rope in the combustion chamber is an old method to change springs when limited tools are available and you don't wish to remove the head. (I have never tried it). .....The other method of filling the cylinder with compressed air I have used. I made a fitting from a cut down sparkplug with an air attachment brazed to it. With the valves closed air is pumped int the cylinder with an air compressor. The air holds the valves closed and the springs can be removed with another tool made for the job. Care should be taken not to use too much pressure as this will force the piston down causing the crank and cam to rotate. ..... Anyway just a few things to think about. Good luck with the rebuild and hope you are on the road soon. Regards David.

Hey RB30X, Your quote (The lash pads "should" be directly under the cam lobes) As Gary Coleman would say: "What chew talkin bout" The Lash pads are on top of the valves. Directly under the cam lobes is the rocker wipe pad. Bullzed. Valve clearences should be checked between the back of the cam lobe and the rocker wipe pad. That is with the lobe facing away from the rocker. Also since you have a oiler cam, check with a thin piece of wire that the oil holes are not blocked on the lobes that have worn rockers. And as Salty has suggested check all the rockers for a wipe pattern that does not extend off the ends of the hardended wear area. The lash pads look to be reasonably tall so I presume this is an aftermarket camshaft. With standard valve spring retainers the maximum thickness of the lash pad should not exceed 170 thou. Regards David.

Hello Again, If you look at the second photo the rocker arm second from the right looks to be adjusted too low on the pivot post compared to the others. Maybe the locking nut has come loose. Check and adjust your clearances on all rockers. David.
-
Hello Bullzed, With the rocker arm in place the lash pad cannot rotate because the ears locate the rocker in position. David.
-
Hello, Have a look at the lash pad that sits on top of the valve inside the spring retainer. If one of the sides has broken off the rocker can slide off. David.
