  1. If the cam timing marks aligned perfectly on the number 1 hole with a new chain why did you move it to the number 3 hole. This would have advanced your camshaft timing a total of 8 degrees.
  2. Hi, This is a Nippon Reinz head gasket for a 2.8 that I downloaded from the net. As you can see there are small differences to the galleries from yours. If you are positive your one will not fit ,take it back to the supplier for a refund.
  3. Sulio, Camshaft, rockers, lash pads ,valve springs and an adjustable cam gear $ 838.00 All available from Stewart Wilkins. Check his website.
  4. Hi, I don't think that is a head gasket for any Zed car . It could be for an RB motor. The holes are different from the picture that I have. Regards David.
  5. Hi , The idea of the extra holes in the sprocket is not to put tension on the chain but to advance the camshaft to compensate for a stretched chain. If you have a new chain you should be in the No 1 hole . When the piston is on top dead centre (as setup in the manual) you should be able to line the line up with the notch in the cam sprocket. If the chain was stretched you would use a wooden wedge to lock the chain in place and rotate the sprocket to the No 2 hole. The holes are 4 degrees apart. If you are tempted to do this read your manual first. If the wedge comes loose and the tensioner pops out you are screwed. This happened to me but with a lot of patience and a couple of tools I made up I got it back in without having to pull the front off the motor . About 2 hours of stuffing around. Regards David.
  6. Hi, I have just recently rebuilt my L26 and got one cam from Stewart Wilkins Rallying and Motorsport in Sydney PH: 02 9444 7022. With the 72 Degree cam I also got reground rockers, new lash pads and new valve springs, and an adjustable cam sprocket. This is for use with the triple Dellortos. For my twin Hitachi/Su carbs I got a regrind from the Camshaft Engineering Company in Perth PH: 08 45772400. Almost the same duration as the Datsun ( C ) cam but more lift. They also reground my spare rockers but I had to get lash pads from Stewart Wilkins for this cam. For the uninitiated always use reground or new rockers and lash pads with a new cam or the old parts will wear it out very quickly. Also one last bit of info. A lot of oils for petrol engines these days don't have ZDDP in them. Without this zinc protection I read on the net that new motors are having wear problems when running in. Particularly cam lobes. All diesel oils still have ZDDP and it was recommended to me to use Caltex Delo 400 for running in, which I have. This can be used for petrol engines. Valvoline racing oil is one of the few oils for petrol engines that have ZDDP. Well that will give you all something to think about. Regards David.
  7. Hi, When you change the flywheel check your crank to make sure you have a spigot bush fitted for the gearbox. I don't think they fitted them to the factory automatic cars because they were not needed. Also make sure you fit the flywheel bolts to the correct tension ( 100 ft/lb or13.8 kg m ). Regards David.

    Gearbox vibration

Hi Guys, I had a vibration in my gearbox that was annoying. The gearstick would shake in 2nd under hard acceleration. Pulled the box and lucky that I hadn't pulled it apart before I found the problem to be the bronze spigot bush in the rear of the crank. The bush was disintergrating and the play was excessive. Replaced it with a new one from auto one for $10.00 and re fitted the box. Problem solved. It made me wonder how many other Zed cars are running around with a 35 year old spigot bush in place. Next time your motor is out have a look at its condition. Regards David.
  10. Hi Sulio, Your right. Ram Tubes; Air Horns; Velocity stacks ( call them what you will )should always be used on any modified engine. The short length are usually for high RPM's and the longer ones for mid-range response. Datsun uses them on the original aircleaner housing for the Hitachi/Su. I use short ones (red anodised ) from redline with Redline oiled socks inside an alloy cold air box. By the way. After seeing your photo of the Dellortos with what looked like a takeoff point for the dizzy vacuum , I took off the front carb and drilled it for vacuum. Worked well. If you are going to use Ram Tubes under an air cleaner have at least 1" clearance between the end of the tube and the air cleaner plate. Regards David.
  11. Congradulations Sulio, post some photos when installed.
  12. Hi Guys, hese Holley manifolds are available from Arizonazcars.com . These are a four barrel manifold using a 390 Holley. Small primaries for economy with larger secondaries for the extra get up and go.
  13. Hi JP240z, I am not pretending to be a carby guru, and there is so many conflicting ideas and preconceptions about what is good and how to set them up, that i'm not prepared to offer particular jetting combinations for cars. What works on my 260z may not work on another. ther are too many variables. RE: Head work, Compression ratio, camshaft, exhaust system, etc. These were starting points only. I do however suggest getting the Weber and Dellorto book that I mentioned and read it at least twice. Be cautious when buying secondhand and get them tuned by someone that knows what he is doing. These are great carbs. When you hear about people denigrating them they have probably had bad experiences trying to tune them themselves. ( If it doesn't work right it must be the carb. No way could it be the operator ). By the way NEVER drill a carby jet. Why do you think they cost so much. These are precision parts designed to do a precise job. I'm not having a go at anyone in particular, I just don't like seeing people wasting good money on someone elses problems. Expect to spend a few Dollars getting your carbs sorted out, but in the long run you will love it. Regards David.
  14. Hi Sulio, I would go for the the second group of sizes for a mild L28, baring in mind that further tuning adjustments will probably be required. You are right when you say some people think that side draught cabies have to be driven hard and at high revs to work. This usually means the carbs are not tuned correctly or linkages are not in syncro. Most people, I feel tend to go oversize with everything, expecting to achieve more power. But the reverse happens. Check out Gordon Dobie on the net. Triple 40mm Dellortos, 235bhp and good economy (10L/100klm). If Dellortos and webers were as bad as people made out, they would not have used them on so many exotic european sports cars since the 1970's. If tuned correctly you will get smooth drivable power and that great induction noise. If you use a cold air box and a pod filter it sounds more like an injected car. I use the round top SU's for everyday driving, but if I want to have a bit more getup and go I change to the Triples. With a lot of stop start driving at the lights the side draft carbies use more fuel because of the pump jets spray every time the throttle is opened. ( one throat per cylinder). On the highway good economy is achieved.Have Fun. David.
  15. Hi Guys, Thought that I would share some of the info that I have come across over the last year or so regarding Dellortos. I have a set of triple 40mm dellortos on a redline manifold that I bought from a guy advertising on ozdat. He said they were off a 260z and would fit straight on with no alterations. (what a load of crap ). These were the emission carbs with a (G) prefix . The emission Dellortos are DHLA 40F,G,H,L and N models. If these are to be used on a Zed car the idle air bleeds should be changed from a 2mmm hole to a 1.2mm hole to make it more suitable for road use. I also found that the mounting studs on the manifold were not straight, meaning that one of the carbies was out of alignment. Spindles on all carbs should be aligned so throttle adjustments are accurate and constant. At this stage I would recommend buying Des Hammills book (How to build and power tune Weber & Dellorto Carburettors). All the jetting was incorrect and I would assume that the guy only got satisfaction at high RPMs . Anyway back to the quest. Gordon Dobie from the Datsun Performance Centre in Cheltenham Victoria is retired now but can be contacted at (datcar54@hotmail.com) regarding any tuning problems with your Zed. He also supplied the Idle air correctors that I needed for my carbies. Great Guy, and he has been building Zed cars since the 1970's. He is retired so may take a while to return your email. Dellorto parts are available from Steve at the Elan Factory in Melbourne. Check his web site or email for prices and tuning info ( sales@elanfactory.com.au ). Now for the good part. These are recommendations for triple 40mm emission Dellortos with the idle air circuit modified as mentioned above. Settings will vary depending on mod's to the engine, cam, head work etc. MODIFIED ENGINE: 32mm chokes; 7772.5 emulsion tubes; 145 mains; 170 air correctors; 50 idles; 45 pumps STANDARD ENGINE 32mm chokes 7772.3 emulsion tubes 135 mains 210 air correctors 45 idles 55pumps Hope this will be of help. Be cautious when buying over the net, because what works on one car may not work well on another. Because i think people don't take the time to tune the carbs correctly initially there will be sets available at cheap prices but you have to consider the rejetting and overhaul costs as well. I would not sell my set under $3000 because that is what the total cost has been to get it right. ( 10Litre/ 100km ). It doesn't matter if you prefer Dellorto, weber or mikuni's, they all will work if tuned correctly. All the best in motoring. David.
  16. Phantom Grip LSD diff converter constructed from aerospace alloys not (aluminium or steel ) with over 500,000 miles of performance testing on a variety of street and race cars . Heat treated and rockwell tested. Even the springs are a bluprinted matched set. For anyone interested read the testimonials at www.phantomgrip.com. This is not an advertisment, just a statement to say that my 260z performs exceptionally well in the wet and the dry on a cheap alternative. David.

  21. Evan, you can just use a small scale for weighing fish from the tackle shop. This will do the job just fine. By the way I use an R200 (3.9 ratio) with a Phantom grip LSD that I got from the USA. Cost about $380au. Works like a LSD around corners and a detroit locker in a straight line. David.
  22. Hi Evan, I should have been clearer when I mentioned the preload. You said that you changed the front pinion driving flange. The pinion nut that holds it on is tightened to a torque that sets the preload on the front pinion bearing. (Not too loose. Not too tight). This is important for the long life of the bearings and operation of the diff. A simple test is as follows. Quoted from the Haynes Book. Attach a spring to one of the bolt holes in the pinion drive flange and exert a pull, noting the reading on the balance ( This indicates the force required to turn the pinion )and this is the preload. This should be between 7 and 9 lb (3.2 to 4.2 kg ). Hope this helps. Regards David.
  23. Hope you checked the preload on the change over.
