  1. Did they uses the L24 crank as well? If so yes its been done before, i wouldn't call it common, but it does work. You end up with a 2.575 liter engine at around 9.27 to 1 CR if using an N42 head... or so I've read.

    Scarab

They were available in a variety of options. Standard was a louvered bonnet. Hood scoop/bulge was an optional extra. Scarab also sold kits so you could convert your Z to a Scarab, but its the 250 or so Scarab built cars that are worth the most. A list of features commonly provided with a Scarab conversion: Standard Features: Drivetrain: • Balanced, blueprinted Chevy 350 (300hp) smallblock with electronic ignition • specially designed cross-flow radiator • high-performance water pump • flex fan to cool the 22-quart-capacity system • Borg Warner Super T-10 4 speed with special Hurst competition shifter linkage • complete exhaust system with a pair of glasspack mufflers Suspension: • Koni adjustable shocks • front and rear sway bars • Teflon compression strut bushings • high-performance rack and pinion mounts • and springs by Scarab • torque control arm, it is essentially a quarter-inch-thick piece of steel bent into a U shape, with about 3/8” of rubber laid in the bottom of the U. Scarab installed it from beneath the front differential mount, bolting front and back into holes tapping into the metal framework of the differential insulator. The torque control arm minimized the forces on the mount and on the front end of the differential itself without totally eliminating the cushioning effects of the insulator like a solid mount would. Brakes: • Disc/Drum (power) with HP pads/shoes or optional FIA 4 piston calipers • Later cars could be had with four-wheel discs, and those with drum brakes could have optional finned cast-iron drums Interior: • Door panels are soundproofed and covered in glove soft, hand-sewn Scottish leather • Momo leather steering wheel • Seats were re-padded and covered in Scottish leather and velour to match the door panels and console lid • Deep pile carpeting Exterior: • Trans-Am front air dam, rear Trans-Am spoiler • Twin exterior rally mirrors • louvered hood and access panels • Scarab logo with associated emblems • high-speed driving lights • All exterior Datsun badging was removed from the Scarab factory cars: the low production volume of these vehicles was highlighted by Scarab factory-specific badging that included raised Scarab lettering to replace the Datsun front fender nameplates, and Scarab Performance black-and-gold rectangular decals in the lower left corner of the windshield and the lower right corner of the rear hatch glass heavy gold medallions containing the Egyptian Scarab Beetle emblem Optional Features: • Drivetrain: • 350 SB (325 or 370hp naturally aspirated) • Turbo (425hp) • automatic transmission • Limited slip differentials in R-180 or R-200 Brakes: • four-wheel discs • finned cast-iron drums Interior: • Recaro contoured, reclining bucket seats with headrests • 12 coats of hand-rubbed lacquer Exterior: • whale tail • reverse scoop hood with side fender louvers • rectangular headlights • flared fender packages • rear window shade Wheels: • Cromodora Turbina wheels • Campagnolo or Appliance Wheels • BBS wheels • Pirelli CN36 tires
  3. The convention is: sides of a car are always described as if you were sitting in the drivers seat looking out the front window. If you are not describing sides of the car in this manner, you are doing it wrong.
  4. If the inner shells are good, you can get the doors reskinned. New bonnets may still be available via Japan, ask your local Nissan Part dealer. Most new metal guards are after market, and don't fit right. Or use FG parts as retro Z suggests.
  5. Yes it did. In Japan it went from 2.8 liters in the S130in 1982 to 2.0 liters in the 200Z Z31 in 1983, and at the same time it was also available as a 3.0 Z31. The point is that this is not the first time Nissan has released a Z car with a smaller engine than a previous model or 2 Z cars with different size engines concurrently.
  6. Its actually a 1976 280Z.
  7. For the first time in History? Who's history? Bizaro Z alternate parallel universe? The Z has had different size engines in the same chassis in the past. 2.0, 2.4 at the same time in the Fairlady Z (S30), 2.6 and 2.8 in the S30 at the same time (AU vs US), 2.0 and 3.0 in the (Z31) 200Z(X,G,R) and 300Z(X,R).
  8. The view from the drivers seat of a 2+2 is the same as a 2 seater (just don't look in the rear view mirror)
  9. 240Z #300 just turned up for sale on the WA Z Register. Project car. with a load of parts and a rotisserie. http://wazcars.com/zindex.php?action=classifieds&id=15
  10. In one piece.
  11. Yeah, my bad. I got asked to update the calendar last week, but have been having other issues, and it completely slipped my mind. If you jump on the email list, you'll get email notifications of club stuff. http://wazcars.com/index.php?title=Email_List
  12. ALL OF THEM!!! Well, one of each. Collect the whole set!!
  13. You also have to live in the USA.
  14. I dont believe it was, and can find no credible evidence to suggest that NDA were responsible for the re-design. http://www.nissanusa.com/about/corporate-info/nissan-in-north-america.html I think this is another one of those Z myths. No one in the USA referrer to the Z31 "Californian" as a "Californian". If it was designed there, I think that it would common knowledge and people would referrer to it as such. Happy to be proven wrong, if someone has some Nissan documentation to prove otherwise
  15. What's californian about it?.
  16. Not really. Similar MPG to a 260Z. The turbo Z31 was getting 31mpg on the highway when new. 20mpg in the city. Not if you do the work yourself and buy the parts from the USA, or pick up a cheap parts car. Eg: Nissan Australia quoted me $80ea for lifters some years ago. I bought them from the USA for $8 each. There's a large enthusiast community in the US that can help you fix anything on these cars (z31.com/phpBB3/ and z31performance.com). Yeah there are alot of neglected Z31's around, but they can be had really cheap for parts. As Lynton says, find a good one with a service record. My Z31 turbo is only around $300 a year for full comp. Though for someone younger, it will probably be more. Yeah, I'd have to agree. Get something newer, more reliable as a first car. Z31's dont really retain any value, and I don't see them becoming desirable or collectable in the near future. Of course there will be die hard Z31 fans that will disagree. Common problems with the Z31: Fuel gauge sender stops working. Headlight switches stop working. Injectors can leak (engine catches fire) vacuum hoses perish and leak (and there's alot of them that control emissions stuff on the engine) t tops can leak

  18. It's not a Z car club as such, its a S30 club, for 240/260/280 S30 chassis cars. I believe one of the reasons for this was that the costs involved in running a club double once you pass a certain number of members, and I think they are close to the limit with just S30 owners. Including S130's owners would probably put them just over the limit and incur higher costs, which would mean higher club fees per member. As it is they can cater for the S30 owners with a small annual club fee, which gets you a CAMS licence for the motorsport events the club is involved in and covers public liability insurance. Though having said that, I'm not part of the club council, that's just my vague recollection of what was discussed when the club went "official". Do I agree with it? No, but if its the difference between having a club in which you get to go out on the track, or not having a club at all, then I'll support it. If they decide to allow 280zx's down the track I'll support that too. We still get 280ZX's turn up to the Z day. There was a nice looking 2 seater at the last one. A guy brought it over from the UK with him. I think S30's probably out number S130 in WA now. I feel bad for them when they are told they cant join.
  19. Yep. I still had the old window open with his username against that post. If you think 280ZX owners cop a ribbing, try owning a Z31 - in the top 10 worst cars ever made according to Jeremy Clarkson.

  21. Weights according to wikipedia (US models I imagine): 240Z 1,068 kg (2,355 lb) 2-seater 260Z 1,207 kg (2,660 lb) 2-seater 280Z 1,304 kg (2,875 lb) 2-seater 280ZX 1,281 kg (2,824 lb) 2-seater 1,356 kg (2,989 lb) 2+2
