C.A.R. Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 On the recent comments made buy myself & the reactions of some of the members on this site to my comments, I am now asking the question: "Do/have I gone too far?". And therefore should I stop posting with my current attitude? In my defence all I can say is, 'yes, i am arrogant, self opinionated & rightious'. But I personally cant stand poor grammar & spelling AND idiocy. That's just me. (Pauly, please don't comment mate - I know your answer). What say you all? PS Im half cut while typing this - poor wording my result.
ozy Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 'rightious'. But I personally cant stand poor grammar & spelling righteous... only taking the piss. i take it that this is following on from the big block thing? yeah, that 1st post was fairly headache inducing to read and yes, folks need to be able to construct sentences or else the meaning is lost. I wouldnt be too concerned with spelling though. now, is the poor grammar due to laziness or other? before i am attacked on this, would any person really talk like the way the 1st post was written? if its laziness, then attack, but what if it isnt? sure if the person is known, then the boundaries are different, but when it relates to a newbie, a bit of politeness and encouragement to either spell or ask the question in a clearer manner would be the way forward. you just dont know how a criticism could be taken. now, on responding to such a post, should one ask merely for the question to be re-stated for greater clarity or just say "wait, what?" followed by cletus from the simpsons. id go for the former. in saying that, i love your responses to most stuff lurch. dont be afraid to be you, just chill with the newbies maybe. I joined a club in the uk and was talking about my zed. one of the crystal castle crew decided to tell me x, y and z and then told me i how i should feel about certain things relating to the zed, where he had no right to tell me how to feel. i rarely return to the site due to his misplaced, insulting and over opinionated language. so it can scare people (newbies) off god, i hope this made sense
HELLFIRE! Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Being gentle with the new visitors is probably a wise move, and then when they become accustom to your acerbic wit let 'em have it. Having said that, I fell that the "cletus" comment was inoffensive. It was clearly a joke insinuating a lack of comprehension by both author and reader. There was no swearing or vilifying language but rather a concise quip constructed in jest. PS what is a "Trapt"? or was that intentional?
NZeder Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 I agree go easy on the first timers - break them in slowly. I like the jest that members on this forum come up with it is not in your face offensive or littered with fowl language (which never looks good when written down as you can't get the feeling for the context it was meant) There is one forum I local here in NZ I only visit every now and then as there are some knowledgeable guys on their but there is also a large young crowd so grammar and language can be an issue so I don't visit this site much anymore (got a PM recently tell me to lighten up after trying to correct their Datsun history, typical teenager, I was informing them that Nissan never purchased Datsun but Dat back in the 30's....anyway I like to ensure people get the facts correct - hell I am still learning after 37 years so I love to be corrected when wrong, this way I learn from my mistakes) One thing I can't stand is text language on a computer screen (or a phone for that matter) there is no place for it - it is just laziness and only a few more key strokes to put the full word in. I know we have a forum "Introductions and Forum Etiquette" and if a new member's post is a little off in the content/grammar etc we can forward them a link to the forum as a gentle reminder. If this is posted in their thread/after their post and they don't read it and continue then let them have it as it is there own doing if they did not follow the guide lines outlined in the Etiquette. Now I guess let them have it is also against those same guidelines so care should always be taken if you would not say it to their face don't put it the written word. I would be anal on the location thing - as if this is not filled out and some post like I have seen recently in another forum "Looking to purchase 240z.....locally" by the idiot did not have his location filled in or post were local was? Yes if you visited this guys other posts you would have seen is was looking for a engine building in his location too but who has time to visit all of someones post to find out were local is? If don't want it to be known were you are, cool just put your state as lest ie TSWGAF, NSW. TSWGAF is an acronym I am sure many are smart enough to work it out.

You are a bit of a dick, but every forum has one, at least you know your place in the world.
Moderators Zedman240® Posted January 13, 2009 Moderators Posted January 13, 2009 But I personally cant stand poor grammar & spelling AND idiocy. That's just me. What say you all? I think we can all agree with that comment! I too cant stand poor spelling and grammar. Just think when it comes time to use the "search" feature on something you really want to find out and it can't be found due to someone's spelling, wouldn't that frustrate you? Most PC's have some spell checkers built in so there isn't really any excuse. One more point is I'm sure Lurch is just trying to prevent them from making and idiot of themselves by letting them know.
Scoota G Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Try to imagine the forum Without Lurch ZZZzzzZZZzz
Jimbo Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 'yes, i am arrogant, self opinionated & righteous' I agree...Knowledgeable but offensive at times
dalee Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 I like your posts Lurch, blunt and to the point. Its not rocket science to few seconds reading through what you have just typed before you hit the post button to check it makes some sense.
nuclear_z Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 I like your posts Being nice to ignorant people is OK if they have the right attitude, but if newbies posts (like me, the newbie) are rubbish I think people have a right to correct them. You may be an angry man, and its just your way??? If your 'nasty' posts stop the forum becoming like SAU, which is full of idiots, i say write everyone a nasty post every now and again.
modular9 Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Who cares? Lurch is anonymous person on the internet. I have better things going on ( often revolve around bosoms and carburettors and not necessarily in that order ) than worry if that anonymous person on the internet has hurt my feelings. I said bosoms. ;D
George Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Personally I don't mind you but lay off the newbies.
zr240 Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 I think if you lay off the nuebyies that would be fine as the oldies know you are most the time just taking the piss. I never think about grammer and spelling when I post on forums as usually Im just quickly replying and not really fussed about it! I know that a few comments made by a few people (not just Lurch) have put off people and now they keep Auszcar at a length and this is not what I think we want to be doing. Ash
240ZR Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 "freedom of speech"... where would we be without it? But, dish it out only if u can take it.
NZeder Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Every forum has a GOC (grumpy old c$nt) this one has Lurch - You think this avatar would be enough of a hit
reverendzed Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 I've said it before but will say it again, diversity of character and personality is one of the most awesome traits of humanity however as this post has bought to light, perhaps one of the hardest to accept in others! I haven't always agreed with the way Lurch may have articulated himself in some responces but have I have always respected his knowledge and willingness to go the extra mile in helping someone out, absolutely! I was one (think I still am!) of the New Guys who got real stuck on some of my rebuild and 'done over' by some of the more 'knowledgable' guys in the industry and it was Lurch who willingly sacrificed his time to help me out (on more than one occasion) Let me finish by saying everyone has a viewpoint but it is exactly that... a view from a point! diversity...it's a sweet and sour thing! Rev.
pauly_adams Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 i personally have no problem with lurch, my grammar is really not that good and yes we have had quite a few blews over the past few year. the real problem is not you lurch it is the age gap in member, some of the members such as me and many others are quite young in there late teens to early 20s then there are other members 40+, its not that we don't get along its we are use to different thing, us young members are use to shortend down text and no grammar due to us using msn etc and the older members are use to good grammar ( the old fashion way lol ), the thing is we all have to find a medium and just stop bitching about it. as for you lurch you just have to be a little more leinient and stop deleting post as that was the thing that enjoyed me not the messags about the grammar. cheers Pauly
sco_aus Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Meh, you talk tough, but I know you, you big lanky teddy bear you. I would only agree with laying off the newbies though. Come and meet the ACT crew, seriously a bunch of ledgends and no dickheads there at all. Real Skyline enthusiasts...
RBZ 260 Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Every forum has a GOC (grumpy old c$nt) this one has Lurch - You think this avatar would be enough of a hit ;D We need Lurch. though sometimes he can be bit extra grumpy expecialy to new members. but i enjoy it. I'm probably one of the ones that take the short cut and mumble words everywhere. not that im not educated or whatever just slack and usualy when i do reply im in a big hurry. so spelling and grammer out the door they go. (even though we do have spell checker on forum, just takes too much time) occasionaly I recheck my posts and fix up the blunders. though i must agree that it was bit hard to read that post but i did figure it out and it turned out to be funny. very funny expecialy after the replies and attachments.
stevo_gj Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 +1 to keep on doing your thing but going easy on newbies Lurch.
chris240 Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Weve all missed a big point here...Big-block-Fred was not offended at all, his final comment was: "I like good humor as well as the next, Cindy ain't nothing to laugh at you gotta take her seriously" Its like were all living in a big group house...we must learn to get on.. I must admit, I did like the hillbilly character from the Simpsons. can we move on now.........
C.A.R. Posted January 14, 2009 Author Posted January 14, 2009 Ok, I've taken all that on board. My sincere apologies to anyone I've offended - I'll buy you a beer if I ever meet any of you. Thanks to all those who gave me honest criticism - I can take it as well as I can dish it out... Those who know me personally know I'm quite a different person in real life - but that doesn't cut it on the forum it appears. I'm going to lurk in the back round of this site for a while - cheers all

Scoota G Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 K.,,, i'm going to ask the Question. What is it that you need to Do/Have to qualify as a member on this Forum. Anyone can answer that. But to Truly be a part of this you need to; 1 2 3 I dunno, because i jumped headfirst into this Forum and the first thing that popped into my head was " These guys are so out of my League" and " i'm not worthy". The reason why i felt like that is because i was a Z lover for a long time and never knew that there were like minded people. The picture all you guys painted as a whole before i joined seemed so exclusive that it scared me to hit Enter the first time. That's only because the Passion for this club by it's Members just Pours from every reply. Well just about.
