Must of got sick off people telling him he's dreaming and taken the add down ! $25k!? I'm not saying this particular car is worth asking price, but I think we're all going to have to get used to the idea that even a car needing full restoration is someday going to cost $25k. This is the case with many other marques already. Example many Targa Top Porsche's are already there....and they were never my favorite... http://bringatrailer.com/2016/02/08/matching-numbers-running-project-25k-1972-porsche-911-targa/ Even though if you look in the comments section there is many dissident voices stating it's unfair. It's just the way it is when demand exceed supply and you have something in very limited numbers left. This is no offhanded go at current owners of 240z's (my own car is in the list of early girl's needing love) but if you look at the Early Girl Bingo thread, how many 'good' early 240z's are really left? If you want an early car you have to take what's out there when it comes up. Beggars cannot be choosers as it were.. What's funny is that reading through the classifieds section I went back close to 10 years worth of cars advertised here and on eBay, Gumtree etc.. What was interesting was the price movement and what people thought of cars and their values at the time. In 2015 2016 they look like absolute bargains. It's very hard to say where values will go in future but I'd be surprised if 240z values flat line for the next 20 years. Just some food for thought. Quote

Administrators gav240z Posted February 12, 2016 Author Administrators Posted February 12, 2016 Wow, am I the only one or is that insane? Who would pay 35k for that? A Fairlady 240Z-L was a rare bird to begin with, it was introduced in 1971, this car is an early looking 72 model car. Finding a rust free S30z in restorable shape in Japan is incredibly hard from what I've seen. This car is complete, single owner car that doesn't look to have been messed about with too much. I'm not sure what a restored car is worth in Japan, but I'm guessing it's worth good money. Hence the current price. I'm just playing devil's advocate here, I noticed in particular on Facebook a group for S30z's there is a lot of people talking down prices of S30z's despite lots of indicators showing that values are rising fast. They seem to think 240z's in particular should be acquirable for $5k all day long. This isn't the 90s anymore... but a lot of people still think you can get them for 1990's prices. The fact that the car already has 33 bids with so many days to go indicates that at least 2 people are willing to bid on it at the current level. Who knows if it will keep going? I often notice cars get pulled from auction before they finish. Perhaps sellers get an offer too good to refuse? Quote

Yeah I have noticed that as well, I guess a firm and real offer could be more appealing that taking your chance on a biider that could be non paying, bidding to look or just plain bogus. dat2kman Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 One thing to remember in a two bidder ebay auction or any auction, that is successfully completed, You will never know just how much higher, the successfull bidder was prepared to bid up to. He/she, only needs to just bid a few dollars more than the underbidder. Put that into a residential house auction scenario,,,,,, The vendors could reaaly miss out! Quote

VintageNissanEnthusiast Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 No kidding. That looks incredible. But maybe WAY too far out of my budget!!! Is this the going rate for 2 seater 260z's? Looks like its in 240 territory? Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted February 17, 2016 Author Administrators Posted February 17, 2016 Is this the going rate for 2 seater 260z's? Looks like its in 240 territory? $15k doesn't go far anymore for a 2 seater. Even 2+2's are hard to find in decent shape around this price point. Quote
VintageNissanEnthusiast Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 Hmm interesting. How long ago would you say you could have picked up a 2 seater for 15k? Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted February 17, 2016 Author Administrators Posted February 17, 2016 Hmm interesting. How long ago would you say you could have picked up a 2 seater for 15k? You'll have to look back over this thread to get an idea of how values have changed over the years. Likewise the classified ads have been kept and make excellent records. Not the best tool, but a useful indicator. Hagerty has a valuation guide / tool that shows you how values have moved. https://www.hagerty.com/apps/valuationtools/1970-Datsun-240Z It says January 2015 is when values started to increase rapidly, interesting it's the 45 year rule too! This is American market values, cars in the 7,000 - 8,000 range these days are only for those planning to do big budget restorations. Even then it's hard to find a 240z project under $10k these days. S30z's in general are far more available in the US but a lot of the low end stuff is junk. Many cars have been tarted up too and look good in photos but in reality are basket cases. Generally speaking the cheapest market to find an S30Z is still North America, Europe, Japan and even here values have started to soar. Better to get in sooner than later...* *Disclaimer: But as someone who believes in the existence of asset bubbles, classic cars included. Make your own judgement... Quote
thriller Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 (edited) Bout a year? I picked up a 2-seater 260 for $12k probably a year and a bit ago. Don't think I'll ever be able to get another one for anywhere near that again. Note the low AUD makes imports out of Australia quite attractive for people in Japan/UK/Etc. I think this has definitely played a part in it. Edited February 17, 2016 by thriller VintageNissanEnthusiast 1 Quote
Dionysus Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 You need to remember condition makes a massive difference in price, yeah you can find a 2+2 for 12k but you will need to fix a lot of rust plus interior so technically you're in it at 20k. Recently a 260 2 seater sold for 18.5k with the seats with some tears and about 5 'visible' rust spots in the paint. I'm keeping an eye on the 240z for sale online. Quote
brent012 Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 I think a big jump happened over 2014, but maybe it's a coincidence as I went from following this thread + gumtree to actually considering buying one around that time. Quote
VintageNissanEnthusiast Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 12k! That is insane! I spoke with someone who's friend recently purchased a good 260z 2 seater for 15k (lucky hey!)Hence me being hopeful that I could get one at the same price. Its interesting to see where the 260's will head to. I think that 240's are going to climb a little more but more growth probably in the 260 area. But who knows! Its people like us who are willing to pay a bit creating the growth I guess! Quote
