There's really nothing unusual rust wise in the car for a 240Z. The original ad was a bit misleading though wasn't it!?

Glad you are "at peace" with it, can't change the past so best to just get on with it. The car is really moving along nicely.

 

Your experience really drives home the importance of fully documenting and photographing any work done.

 

Can't wait to see it with colour.

Went in to check out the car at lunch time before the high fill goes on.  Must say it's looking pretty good.  They spent a couple of hours on the panel gaps when trial fitting the panels and I'm a happy man with how it's coming out

This was the door they nearly gave up and bought a new skin.  You can see (just) where it had been gouged down the middle (and then 30mm of bog or so over the top).  These guys perservered and fixed the original skin - and I think their work looks pretty good:

Yep my car (came from same seller) was advertised as a dry country car with no rust. I knew it had some rust but have been quite surprised what I have found. It's all good fun though. Luckily for me I decided I could tackle all of the repairs my self and to date it's all working out ok. I'm just spending the money on other items

I questioned how/why the sound deadener is apparently back on - they hit it with a heat gun and apparently it lifts relatively easily, so these guys heat/lift it then repair and rust guard then replace it before hitting it with paint.  Interesting method and not what I was expecting.  Got no reason to doubt them as clearly it has been off from the rust photos underneath, and the deadener doesn't look quite as neat now.  The dodgy bits on the dirver's side were where I originally tried to strip off the deadener myself.

 

Anyway so this is where it sits right now - can't help but be excited! :

Thanks Pete.  I've been frantically trying to sort out our garage so that I actually have somewhere I can do some of the jobs I'm still planning on doing myself - it's still in a shocker from moving in a couple of months ago and has been low priority compared to getting some of the rest of the house sorted out!  Definitely need to get it sorted now.

Well I see a crack in the repairs as a start, so if that's their repair work I'd be VERY disappointed.

 

If I produced a repair of that quality to my customers, I'd be out of work!

Did the roof skin come off after that rust was found at the back of the drip rail?

Having spoken to a few people and showing them photos etc I am comfortable that the body shop are doing an adequate job - rust is being cut out and new metal welded in etc.  Might not be as pretty as what it would be if I was capable of doing it myself and had all the time in the world to get everything perfect.  The advice I've had though is that it is a perfectly reasonable commercial rust repair job.

 

At the start of the job the guy asked me what I was after, ranging from cheap to concours.  I told him it won't be a concours car, but that I wanted all the rust properly repaired, being cut out and welded (definitely not a bog and hope job).  I'm happy to share what this level of finish is costing me via PM if people are interested, and they can do with that what they will.  Lurch can possibly offer an opinion as to what his shop would charge for a finish that he would be happy with for comparison (although I understand this can be difficult only going off photos - it can be hard to estimate at the best of times).

 

In general terms I will say that the body work has been 2 guys working on the car for most of the last couple of months, and the price is definitely not cheap  (this has more than doubled what I have spent on buying the car and all repair work and parts to date).  They've been upfront with me where they don't think they can do a satisfactory job on repairing (such as the headlight bucket) and they've been happy to share what they're doing.  Any time I've had a question they've encouraged me to come and take a look in person and inspect the work - and have not been shy to show me what's going on when I go to the shop.  They're definitely NOT relying on bog etc to get the issues sorted!!

 

So people can look at the photos etc (or in person once I have it back - happy for people to contact me and come to my house and I will definitely have it out at the first drive day I can!) and make their own decision as to whether they would also use these guys.  For me personally I have no regrets on using them.

The repairs look good and should do the job fine. It aint exactly a chicken wire and bog job.

Why do I feel an Ice Cream headache coming on?

With the car having sat in the brake shop for a few weeks while they waited for parts (job was meant to be done while the hi-fill cured so should only have been there a few days) progress proper stalled for a while, but has picked up again over the past 3 weeks.  I might have some of these out of order (i don't understand the painting process that well.
