I had the same drama with my old one. I fixed the carbs up mint, did the timing etc, and it would idle beautiful but wouldn't drive (misfire etc like you mention). I sold it before fixing it, but spoke to the buyer many months later when I saw the car on gumtree again. He said he took it to mechanic and it turned out it was weak spark. I can't remember what he said was the exact problem, but I know I replaced the rotor and cap with a better one I had, and I put a new coil in it, so it must have been something else. Presuming you problem is also spark, I would recommend a new coil as they are cheap. If you have already done the leads, I would cross that off the list. How new are your plugs? I would also look at all the earth wires between the engine and the battery and/or chassis. Ensure the wires and lugs are good condition, not covered in oil, etc. Replacing the wiring to the coil and dizzy may also help, similarly replacing the ballast resistor as it may be lowering the voltage to the coil too much.

I am so sick of tek screws! My first 260z also had expanding foam in many strange places. I heard the car had a v8 back in the day, so I wondered if the foam was stop smoke getting into cabin

My bad. I was thinking of the Programmable 6AL-2 #6530 http://msdignition.com/Products/Ignitions/6530_-_MSD_Digital_Programmable_6AL-2.aspx (I thought all 6AL-2 were programmable, but apparently not). I have heard good things about them. If anyone is considering MSD, you might also want to look at ICE Ignition. They are Australian made. See this for a comparison to CDI http://www.iceignition.com/ice-vs-cdi

I've read some good things about the programmable one on v8 forums like aussiev8.com.au. You need a locked dizzy to use one though (ie no/disabled mechanical advance within the dizzy).

AFAIK, bog is porous, which can explain the rust under it (especially if it was wet sanded).

Nissan SWB Patrol with std L28 engine
neRok replied to Enkei74's topic in Introductions and Forum Etiquette
Howdy If you are looking for engine performance, there are a few patrols with turbo L28 getting around. You may be able to find some build threads on http://patrol4x4.com and http://outerlimits4x4.com. There was also a bloke on patrol4x4 from [some European country I am forgetting right now] that built an L28-based stroker for his sprung-over MK. Unfortunately he sold the engine recently (before using it) as he is going to convert to some newish BMW motor. EFI is a good option for a 4x4, as carbies of any sort can give drama when exposed to angles. So whilst all the triple-carb setups you seen on zeds might look sweet and perform good, I suspect they will be terrible offroad. If you are looking to improve the 4x4 aspect, there is some good reading and helpful people on patrol4x4.com. You can also check out the MQ wiki at http://mq-patrol.com for lots of good info. -

Bloke on Nissan Patrol forum selling rebuilt L28 head and cam etc. Thought I would post it here for him. http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/2319770-post17.html -
This is a problem on lots of forums. Facebook has replaced a lot of the need for a forum. I think reddit has a decent setup, ie 1 big list of threads. Take all the tech sections on here, they should be rolled up into 1 big tech section, and prefixes added to the thread for body, engine, etc. Currently people may only want to read the engine section, and dont look at the others. If you roll them all into 1 section, they will still see the engine threads, plus others that they may then participate in. Also get a facebook account for the forum, and set it up so that everyday a top-5 thread list gets posted to facebook. People will be more likely to like the facebook page, see the threads list and then visit the forum. Same thing with the front page stories if they are kept, post links on facebook to generate traffic. And a mobile-orientated CSS setup will do wonders for the site, no need for an app.

Don't be surprised if other sites start going to a payed model. They can't run these big sites for free, so you either need to pay a small fee, or be inundated with advertising. Don't worry about giving out credit card details. If something dodgy does happen (unlikely), your credit card provider covers you. I would be more worried signing up for any site - even this forum - and all of them using the same email and password. 1 site gets hacked and your whole online identity could be compromised.

I like Repco tools. They are good quality for home handyman, good price, and they have lifetime warranty. Other tool brands also have lifetime warranty, but Repco is open all weekend (and public holidays), so it is actually convenient. Sometimes they have big sales (I got most of my Repco tools at near 50% off!), or you can find someone with a Repco trade card for more discount, and you can also get some bargains on gumtree/ebay occasionally.

It is probably the needle valve not closing correctly - may have worn down too much. This means the fuel level gets higher, and fuel dribbles out the carb. Adjusting the underside nut - which moves the needle up/down, isn't going to stop the fuel from dribbling out, and hence not fix the problem. You can buy new valve off ebay for a few dollars from memory. Rebuild kits would also come with one. If you want to rebuild the carb(s), there are bushings etc that need replacing to properly rebuild them, which you may not be able to replace? In which case, perhaps buy rebuilt carbs from a reputable company (probably an oversees company). The SU are quite simple, I learnt a fair bit by reading the service manual, watching a few youtube vids, and fiddling with the carb. Then rinse and repeat a few times until it all sinks in

I hope the prices wont be through the roof - which is what usually happens in these situations (everyone wants their big fat markup).

Is it true what they say about electricity prices?
neRok replied to Scottz's topic in Off Topic Discussions
@Scottz, I was just trying to illustrate that a carbon price scheme means for the same amount of carbon output, you get more product/services, or for the same amount of product/services, there is less carbon output. @Rat1314, the cost/burden if everyone's to share. Companies are making products/services for things you/society wants. -

Big mining/oil/gas companies are all pro-environment when there is lots of profit/money/jobs floating around. Barely hear a whisper about it in the office at the moment When the belts get tightened and budgets squeezed, the environment seems to be first out the door. A carbon price pushes efficiency. Consider the 2 scenarios. 1) No carbon tax. Company X pumps out as much as it wants, say 100 carbons. Company Y starts producing too, they pump out 30 carbons. 2) Carbon tax. Company X is paying for its 100 carbons. It wants to increase profit, so it increases its efficiency, drops its carbon output to 80. There is now 20 extra carbons on the market, so company Y buys it and starts producing. Company Y has also become more efficient, so it doesn't need 30 anymore (like in example 1). So now there is 2 companies producing the same amount of 'product', yet there is far less carbon pollution as a result. EDIT: Good read: http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/comment/greg-hunts-claim-on-carbon-figures-little-more-than-hot-air-20131213-2zc6q.html -

To put it in perspective, even though Australia is only the 52nd most populated country in the world, we are the 14th biggest emitter of carbon polution. Per capita, we pump out a hell of a lot. People love to say that the carbon tax doesn't work, it wont reduce Australia's emissions, and even if it does, other countries are still pumping out a heap more. The numbers came in the other day, and we have had actually had a 0.1% reduction. -0.1% doesn't sound like much, but when you consider it was predicted to increase 1.2%, the effect it has had becomes more apparent. With regards to China etc reducing their emissions, there are reports that China are planning to introduce a carbon price scheme based on what we have done in Australia. Can you imagine if they have a >1% reduction, that would be a huge improvement. I believe that was a good point of our carbon pricing policy(s), we have lead by example. China have also already introduced policy that puts a total cap on their carbon emissions, and they will be putting a cap on the amount of coal they import because they will be moving away from dirty power production. Carbon pricing also pushes efficiency, which will need to be delivered by new technologies. This is what Australia should be doing, inventing things and creating new technologies that we can export to the rest of the world, like we have done many times before. Instead, Australia votes in the Abbott government, who feel we don't need a Science Minister And pillar #1 for the economy, boost manufacture, what a joke. PS- I use 8 units of electricity per day. It was ~11 when I had 4 other people living with me. You blokes are doing it wrong -
You need a special mask/cartridge to filter the problem iso' chemicals in the 2pack. Ultimately, a mask fed fresh air is the go. I would presume a proper booth would have this setup and let you use their equipment. A normal sundstrom mask does not filter these ISO's. Ive heard ISO-free arent as good as regular 2pack. Ive heard 2pack primer is the way to go, even ISO-free is better than acrylic. You can get a product from AutoOne, its the Hi-Chem 2pack ISO-Free Primer Isolator, which can also be high built. So, it pretty much does everything, you can spray acrylic colour over it, and is safe for doing at home with a regular filtered mask. If you decide to paint 2pack at home, I also hear that 2pack takes a long time to dry, so overspray will land on your surroundings - dry - and stick. Whereas acrylic dries quickly and often whilst it is airborn, so you just get coloured dust everywhere. The first car I painted was a Hilux with acrylic, and got 1 run on the corner of the door where the window frame joins. If you spray lots of thin coats, you wont get runs. So in the OP when you said 'Ive been told to do 2 colour coats', I wouldnt think about that way. I would get the right amount of colour to cover the surface area you need, and spray it thin and gradual until it is all gone. It might take 3 coats, it might take 6, just go with it. I told the paint shop it was a single cab hilux, they gave me so many litres, and it took 4 coats.

Pretty sure GranTurismo5 had a 240z in it - but its PS3 only. Need For Speed World has a 240z in it too. Its actually a free game and entirely online play, but certain cars you have to buy (pretty sure 240z falls in this bucket). The 240z is actually one of the better cars in its class, and hardly no one uses it online (coz its not new and ricer), and when modded up with turbo and suspension etc, it dominates.

Writing down number plates.... Illegal?
neRok replied to BatmansDatsun's topic in Off Topic Discussions
From what ive read (very little) about the new laws in QLD, youre f--d! You can get done for undue noise afaik. Stopping on a hill and taking off is not normal, and from the blokes perspective you were probably trying to hoon. If the cops come knocking, I would be careful telling your story to the cops the way you did here. Just say its a new engine in an old car, it stalled on the hill, you restarted and drove off. -
Yes, so you test the brakes as described in the braking section of VSB14, which is similar to what ScootaG said. The negligible weight difference will have little effect on the stock brakes performance. The weight difference is not much more than a skinny bloke driving, or a fat bloke driving.
-
There is nothing in VSB14 that relates power to brake performance, it's all weight to brakes. And a 350chev zed doesnt come in a lot heavier than an L-engined zed. Stock brakes on mine, and a QLD mod plate.

Where to buy AN hose and fittings in Melbourne
neRok replied to KatoKid's topic in General Maintenance
I did a bit of reading about this on the V8 forum. Everyone said Speedflow are great, but you do pay for it. Aeroflow are good - not as good as Speedflow - but very good price:performance ratio. Aeroflow are Rocket Industries house brand, made for them/to their specifications in China. I dont recall a lot about Proflow, but I believe they are VPWs alternative to Aeroflow. -
