The fact that the master is new or just rebuilt doesn't mean the fault is not in there. If for example the pedal was pushed all the way to the floor (during the initial bleeding process) before the it was allowed to fill with fluid the friction could have easily turned a cup. Or if the initial bleed was a violent affair with severe and extreme pumping of the pedal (and I have seen very competent mechanics do just that) then same thing. I will say it again - if the fluid levels are not changing - you have an internal leak! MaygZ

Dave, are they copper pipes? It is my understanding that copper becomes brittle when exposed to vibration. This is then amplified when carrying fluid under pressure. I can't confirm at the moment, but I don't think copper pipes are approved for brake or fuel lines under ADRs. http://astp.jst.go.jp/modules/search/index.php?page=DocumentDetail&journalId=0514-5163_61_6_Low-Cycle+Fatigue+Fracture+Phenomenon+of+Bended+Copper+Pipes+under+Internal+Pressure_N%2FA Please have a check or maybe someone here can confirm. I hope I'm wrong (I'm not a metallurgist but I do know a bit about copper(s).) MaygZ

Benny Boy, are you losing fluid? Are the master cylinder levels going down? If the answer is yes, then you have an external leak. Find it and fix it. It could be anywhere in the system so after checking the likely spots (all the pistons, back of the master cylinder - into the vac unit) then check along all the lines and any pressure switches. If the answer is no (to lowering levels) then you have an internal leak. These are nearly always in the master cylinder where a cup has folded or split. This allows any pressure built up to leak back into the non-pressured side of the system. The only way to fix it is to remove it and replace the cups. With regard to the one-way valve in the manifold vacuum line from the manifold to the booster: the valve allows a constant vacuum to be maintained in the booster. Obviously manifold vacuum changes (quite a lot) depending on engine rpm and throttle opening. Without this valve your braking assistance will change a lot through the rev range (with a wide open throttle - stuck open or just wanting to dab them to balance the car) you will have no boost. They are a pretty universal thing so you should be able to source one from any vehicle that has a similar sized booster. They are easy to check - blow through one way - no blow through the other. Phillip Island Nasty Crash Corvette v Porsche v 280Z

That's some pretty bad understeer, Pete. -
If Gordo would like the year off - and I can understand why he would like a break - I am happy to hold a BBQ similar to his at my place. Yes I'm back home from farkin far east gippsland. I'm just out of Lancefield and Kilmore. It's under an hour up the Hume from the CBD, 20 mins from the airport, just over an hour from the boys from the 'rat. (2 hours for Lurchos :'( ) There is plenty of room for our displays, plenty of room for camping and with enough notice I could probably slaughter a sheep for the spit. The only issue with my place is that once the extreme fire danger periods start, we don't like to have many visitors. But that tends to be much later in the year. Let me know if I can help. MaygZ

Rising Rate Adjustable fuel regulator for carby setup.
MaygZ replied to Fairlady Z's topic in Wanted
Don't confuse pressure with volume. A low pressure/high volume pump with a pressure regulator will get it just right. Don't forget to ensure there is plenty of scope for fuel return from the carbies back to the tank. I have in the past seen these lines blocked and the excess fuel has to go somewhere (or the pump simply aerates the fuel). I would also suggest that you spray carbie cleaner through the throats and allow it to soak overnight. I would be tempted to do it for a couple of days in a row. This should clean/soften any residue that is sitting in air/fuel bleeds. Give it chance to breath if it hasn't breathed for a while. -
OK. I'm going to say it ..... is there a rotor button in the distributor? Is there a points gap? Are the contacts and posts in the distributor cap working/sprung/present?

Alex, that's not very helpful. He was looking for some help in getting his car started.

Is Kobes 260 still for sale? You wont find a better one than that!

I think Benny had one of those rocker covers. He might still have it.

Well said. :-)

I don't know Simon. How many coppers with limited conflict resolution skills does it take to change a light bulb while you walk to work as your car has a canary and you've lost your licence?

I have the same cabinet. I agree completely with Lurchos about the Supercheap stuff being crap. When doing aluminium, it leaves it almost black with sand/dust partilces that then have to scrubbed off. I bought some garnet from BJ Bearings. Not only is it much better than the black crap, but it is much cheaper (as you buy a 20kg bag). The crappy filter still blocks up really quickly, so I took it off. I hooked an old vaccuum cleaner into the hole and it works a treat. You need a cleaner with variale suction, or it sucks the gloves in when your not actually blasting. I have it set up so I simply open/close that little vent thingy on the hand-grip (the wife says it's for doing curtains or something - but she was impressed that I knew it was called a vaccuum cleaner). I also ran some rubber door weather seal around the edges to help further prevent the 'minstrel' look. I would recommend one of these to anyone. They are not perfect and will need some minor changes to work the way you want. Having said that, my light globe has blown and I can't work out how to get the globe out. Any ideas? MaygZ

Respect Your Elders: 1971 Datsun 240Z Vs 2013 Scion FR-S (Toyota 86)
MaygZ replied to Johnboy's topic in General Discussions
If the 86 sells here in the small numbers that the 240Z did and it only runs for a few years, then I do see it being a collector's car in 40 odd years. As I also see the MX5 being in the same time span. The series 1 Rx7's are just starting to head that way and I'm sure that in another 10 years we wont be able to afford them either. Whenever they make a car with classic lines, some sporty handling and in reasonably small numbers it's to be expected. Do you think that 40 years ago people would think that the mini they bought for their wives to drop the kids at school would be a collector's car? Sometimes it really can't be explained other than just chasing an ideal like the split screen Kombi? or the beetle? I personally love the shape of the 86, but feel that they made a mistake when they couldn't decide the market for the car. I feel they have made the same mistake as made with the early Supras and the Calibras. They should have built a small V8 for it (maybe 3.0l) with 250-300 Kw and they could have killed the affordable sports car market (like the 240 did). MaygZ -
Benny, you are welcome to bring it up here, but there won't be room in the shed. You can leave it under a cover, or help me build a small shed for it. MaygZ

Respect Your Elders: 1971 Datsun 240Z Vs 2013 Scion FR-S (Toyota 86)
MaygZ replied to Johnboy's topic in General Discussions
No it doesn't, but it compares favourably to a modern sporty car. This does show us how advanced the 240 was in it's day and why it is still a very popular car with drivers. MaygZ -
If you are looking to buy one and it fits in your budget, make contact with the owner, ask for more photos to be emailed to you. If after seeing more photos, you are still interested, ask one of the Canberra boys if they will go and look at it for you - I'm sure one of them will do that for you. If there report comes back positive about the car, go to Canberra and buy it - and buy the helpful Canberra boy a slab or similar. Put the car on a trailer and tow it home. You can then start your 'journey'. MaygZ

Looks great mate. I wish I had started with one as good as yours.

Well done Scoota. Just out of curiosity...... could you get a 504 under the bonnet? I'm sure Pete would find a way of building one for you. -
QLD (Amended) Hoon Laws - sucks to be you guys :(
MaygZ replied to C.A.R.'s topic in Off Topic Discussions
I assumed all states would be the same (never assume ....). This is cut from the relevant Vic Roads page: From 1 February 2011, new conditions of use for club permit vehicles apply. Under the new conditions of use, permit holders are no longer restricted to club sanctioned activities when using their vehicles. Club Permit vehicles can be used at any time for any purpose other than for the carriage of goods or passengers for hire or reward. A logbook is issued to permit holders to record the use of the vehicle over the permit period. A log book entry must be made each day that the vehicle is used (unless the vehicle is within 100 metres of the garaged address). A logbook must be carried in the vehicle, or on the rider in the case of motorcycles, at all times the vehicle is in use. Financial members of VicRoads’ approved clubs are able to apply for either a 45 or 90 day permit depending on how much use they expect to make of their vehicles over a 12 month period. If a person obtains a 45 day permit but later decides that this is not enough, another 45 day permit may be purchased later on. However, no-one will be able to obtain a permit to drive their vehicle for more than 90 days in each 12 month registration period. Maybe the Qld car clubs should be lobbying for similar treatment - if not, there's yet another reason to move to the most livable city -
QLD (Amended) Hoon Laws - sucks to be you guys :(
MaygZ replied to C.A.R.'s topic in Off Topic Discussions
In Victoria, currently, 1. Undue smoke and noise doesn't refer to engine revving but rather to spinning wheels - the noise is to cover the fact that smoke is not always made. Below is cut directly from the Qld Road Rules. The impound offence is 219(1)(b) - that is on part b. of the offences section is an impound offence. Please read the appropriate exapmle from the Rules. 291 Making unnecessary noise or smoke (1) A person must not— (a) start a vehicle, or drive a vehicle, in a way that makes unnecessary noise or smoke; or (b) wilfully start a vehicle, or drive a vehicle, in a way that makes unnecessary noise or smoke. Maximum penalty—20 penalty units. Example for paragraph (a)— driving a vehicle in a way that causes noise or smoke because of— (a) disrepair of the vehicle; or (b) the way the vehicle is loaded; or © the condition, construction or adjustment of the vehicle’s engine or other equipment Example for paragraph (b)— driving a vehicle in a way that causes noise or smoke by wilfully and unnecessarily causing the wheels of the vehicle to lose traction and spin on the road surface 2. Careless driving is not in regard to making a mistake or having a collision, but rather to the 'intentional' loss of traction. It must be intentional - established by evidence of sustained high engine revs and continuous wheel spin - ie NOT a CHURP at the lights. My reading of Sect 83 of the Qld Act doesn't make any reference to lose of traction and appears very similar to Sect 65 of the Road Safety Act (Vic). It requires a lack of 'due care and attention'. This is similar to Vic. In this case I think this one is very harsh for a Tier 1 offence. 3. A speed trial is not seeing if you can knock 3 minutes off your trip to work, it refers to checking out your lap times compared to others who are doing the same course. It is just like a street race, but where only one car does the run at a time. Obviously a 'race' requires more than one car competing together - a 'speed trial' is the same thing but one car against the clock. Reading the Qld Act speed trial also refers to seeing how fast your car can go - so unless it is a Mini 850 with 2 pistons seized is likely to be well over any posted speed limit (prob above the 190km/h mark and that sounds like hooning to me) I agree that the QLD rules seem to be worded a little strangely. D3c0y - You no longer require club events for the use of your club plates. It is now a 45 or 90 day log book. Also, where did you read that they were making it retrospective? BobsYourUncle - Under no circumstances is it ever worth moving to SA!!! -
The Koni Z31 front inserts fit in a 240 tube. I needed to take some of the paint off with some sand-paper, but they fitted nicely. I used Koni and as it is tight, I can't confirm that the Tokico ones will fit.
