vorn70 Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 They look great Mossy, They go well with the rest of the car. Quote
mossy Posted February 2, 2014 Author Posted February 2, 2014 Had a good run in the kameari's on the weekend and I have to say I quite like them, very comfy but a headrest would be nice. I had them bolted to some thick steel plates directly to the floor seat brackets with one of those black plastic factory spacers under each corner, not sure if I'll leave it like that or not as I'd love some sliders but that would raise the seat even higher and I'm not keen on doing that. The drive day was the first real long shakedown of the car I've done so its given me a good idea on where I want the car to be, driving Lurchs 240z helped as well. As you all know Lurch has throttle bodies on his 240 and I was very impressed with how it drove so this may be on the cards down the track but I also don't think my linkages were helping the situation, so I will be sorting that issue out first. I'm not real happy with the coilovers and the tokico illuminas, maybe they aren't valved right to my setup, (Lurch drove it so he may be able to chime in) but I have a spare set of struts so the coilovers may be for sale soon and I'll talk to Barry at top performance about some koni yellows and his setup and also whats best for my car as a street only weekend car. Another issue is the heavy steering, as soon as I turned the wheel in Lurch's car I noticed a huge difference compared to mine, I'm pretty sure his wheels are a lot smaller to my 225 tyres but the only way I see getting past this issue is some smaller wats and tyres (but I love my 16's) or a power steering setup like this http://zpowersteering.com/ I want it to be comfortable for long/spirited drives without feeling like I'm knaackered after a drive. taylor 1 Quote
WA240Z Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Hi Mossy, I have recently installed king low springs along with koni yellows. These are in standard unmodified struts. Along with this suspension setup I am running 205/60 15 Dunlop Z 1 star specs. For me I have found this to be a very good fast road setup. I think one area too many people get wrong with these cars when being used primarly for the road is using tyres with too low a side wall, low profile tyres. Handeling is so easily upset when suspension geometry is modified to far from original design including tyre aspect ratios. Even with 205 tyres the steering is still light and direct with no bump steer. I think it would be a real shame to put power steering on your car. By the way the car looks absolutly fantastic, love your work. Billy. Quote
d3c0y Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 I had 225/50/16s +4 on my car and the steering wasn't heavy. Maybe it to do with your castor or some other alignment settings. Do you have an adjustable front end? Quote

I've got the gmachine bushes in the front but I'm not sure what the settings were when I took it in for an alignment, I might give them a call. Quote
dat240z Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 I run 235's all round and only find the steering heavy in slow moving situations ie, carparks. For me, I get much more direct feedback and realistic feel with non p/steering..... But out of curiosity, what are these kits worth $$?? and install time?? Quote
acf321 Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 + 1 KONI YELLOW + King Springs Actually, Billy and my car are exactly the same in the setup except I have 1" sectioned rear end, and 1 coil cut from the top of the springs up front. We both have 205/60R15 Dunlop Direzza Starspecs, and both run zero offset 15X7" wheels, me Panasport Ultralights, and Billy has the Konig's. To be honest, aside from the fact that my car needs another 30mm out of the front and a change of front end bushes to allow for more caster, I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER with the set-up of my car. I have nolathane front sway bar bushes and everything else is OEM. Having owned a 930 and 2.7 Carrera, and now the Brown hornet, I would not change a thing. Before that I had 205's and Clios, and seriously this 240Z is holding its own with the whole lot of them. I thought about a rear and front strut mount, but that is not a big requirement I feel. I have set my rear Koni's to half hard, and the fronts to 2/3rds hard (just a punt here) and my front tryes are at 34 psi cold, with rears at 33 cold. On another note, its James view that the best way to ruin a 240Z handling is by sticking a rear sway bar on it, so mine does not have one. I'm not sure what more one would want from a fast road setup in a 240z. Of course, the track is a very very different environment and I can't speak for that at all. Quote
Retro Z Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 But out of curiosity, what are these kits worth $$?? and install time?? The electric steering kit is around $1500. Takes about 30 mins to install as there is no hose or pumps etc..its just a replacement steering rack. My friend has one in his 2+2 and it works very well. I will be getting one after i get my rax return as i have 275/40's up front and because the missus wants to also drive it. Quote
dat240z Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Ah cool, not too expensive and a quick install. Would be interested to hear your results! Quote

How come James didn't section the front struts as well Adam, if the fronts were sectioned an inch as well wouldn't that of brought the car to where you want? I'm sure there's a reason but like most things mechanical I have no idea May have found an issue to the heavy steering, I inflated the tyres about a week ago to around 37 psi on my compressor, I thought I'd go and check them with a porsche tyre pressure gauge tonight and I got about 24 psi on all four tyres, I'm guessing my cheap ass tyre inflating gun that attaches to my compressor isn't real accurate. acf321 Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Mossy, James was flat out when I took my car in, and I was anxious to get it registered ... close to five years is a bog part of anyone's life !!! Anyway, they ran out of time. I plan on shaking the car down a bit more and then will take her back for an oil change (has this funny royal purple something in it now) and then they will properly section the front to the same height as the rear, will change the front lower control arm bushes and set up the caster. James said it'll handle like a go-cart when done, and to be honest I just can't wait. Suspect once this is done I'll see who's up for a VERY LONG run in NSW. Your car is looking completely awesome Mossy, I like it just about as much as I like Gareth's, and Lurch's, and mine, and Billys, and Andrew's (in no order of course!) Cheers Quote
mossy Posted February 4, 2014 Author Posted February 4, 2014 Got it, thanks Adam, I might stop by top performance today to have a chat about some koni yellows. Quote
mossy Posted February 5, 2014 Author Posted February 5, 2014 Well I did stop by top performance today for a chat about some yellows but Barry wasn't there so I thought while I'm here.... Quote
George Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 Nice. Matches your car colour! That's the main reason you bought them right? Quote
Riceburner Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 Sport or Race Mossy and do you know the difference? Also what is length of them? Quote

These are the 8641-1060 sport Gareth, not sure of the difference between them, the length of the body is just under 365mm Quote
acf321 Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 Well done Mossy, you'll be very happy with those. Drove the Hornet to work in the City early today and was dreading it a bit, with the suit on an all. Actually ended up humiliating a new Maloo Ute driver, assisted largely by the Koni's. Coming onto the Anzac bridge with a sharp and off camber left corner from Victoria Rd, the Hornet stuck like poo to a blanket, and that's without the front end set up correctly. Not harsh or bumpy either. Adam Quote
mossy Posted February 5, 2014 Author Posted February 5, 2014 Nice one mate, hopefully you suit didn't smell of fuel too much! Quote
acf321 Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 Haa funny that, I went for a burn Sunday morning and came inside after an hour or so and the Wife says; "you stink like petrol and oil" and I said; "yeah, nice smell isn't it". See how the suit smells tonight! Quote
mossy Posted February 9, 2014 Author Posted February 9, 2014 Bought some rose joint linkages for the carbs and was trying to figure out what to do with the rest of the linkages as it was the one that goes through the firewall that broke. I saw some guys have converted to a cable setup so I have ordered a lokar universal cable which from what I've read is a big difference to the factory linkage setup, can be converted back to factory if I like. The other think I forgot to mention that I noticed on the drive day was the 3rd synchro is knackered in the gearbox, big mistake as I had all new bearings put in but the syncros were not the correct ones in the kit so I though don't worry about it, so it's either gearbox out again or try something like the redline mtl gearbox oil. Also toying with the idea of going down a size in wheel size to 15x8 225/50/15, not sure about this one yet though Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted February 9, 2014 Moderators Posted February 9, 2014 I think 225 50 in the 15's is a tad on the smaller side for the zed; you'll have to go to a 55 series for the 650mm zed radius. Quote
mossy Posted February 10, 2014 Author Posted February 10, 2014 I looked at the tyre calculator Dimitri and my current tyre (225/45/16) is smaller than stock and the 225/50/15 is very slightly smalller again, I think the tyre size you mentioned is pretty spot on what you'd need to keep the radius right but I don't think anyone makes that size. Took out the coilovers today to prepare for some new struts with my koni yellows, just waiting to talk to Barry at toperformance to discuss the best road setup, I will put the coilovers up for sale soon also. taylor 1 Quote
Agno Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 I'm running 225/50/15 on my car and I have found that the speedo is very accurate. Visually the tyres look to be the correct size (well proportioned) on the car as well Quote
mossy Posted February 10, 2014 Author Posted February 10, 2014 Thats interesting Alex, I wonder if its because some tyres run wider than others in the same size? Quote
Agno Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 According to the specs sheet my tyres (Toyo T1R) are 230mm wide and have a 605mm rolling diameter. I spent weeks almost constantly looking for a 225/55 or a 215/55 tyre but there aren't really a whole lot of choices when looking at wide (relatively speaking) 15" tyres. Quote
