How many donuts do you want to carry?  :P

Guess it will be a good base to modify into a fuel tank.

But, how big is it? You may be driving from suburb to suburb, refuelling at each, with 300+ ponies ???

Suprise suprise  ;)

Its 650mm in diameter, 265mm deep and has a water capacity as stated by the seller of 61 litres, add the neck capacity and then some when I change the centre from a donut to closed congigurations and Id say close to 65 if not more litres.

I think its a pretty good solution.

Nice buy John $5.50 for the tank $200.00 to get tested and fix ;).

No testing nor certification required as it wont be holding LPG LOL

Where is the spare wheel going to go?  :o

Jamo

Jamo

Spare wheels are no longer a legal requirement, so either a can of puncture repair, a large phillips head self tapper and screwdriver, or a space saver wheel to sit inside above the tank LOL

Fair enough. What are you planning to put in the space where the tank used to be?

Hi Jamo

Mufflers with an aluminium heat shield above them to isolate heat sink between them and the pan.

From the mufflers I will swing the twin pipes across so as they exit at the original Zed pipe point.

Should also assist with the rear diff mounting as the M86 uses a rear mounting bush in an awkward place.

$5.50 for a 60lt tank with a factory fit, that's awesome. Great work John!

Steering rack looks very close too. Waht are the details with this in terms of mods regarding  rods ends, power steering etc. Could this be adaptable to stockish Z's?

Thanks, Gareth.

Thanks guy's,

The tank was a fluke find on EBay, dimensions were right, fit for my purpose, although a bit on the heavy side and probably wouldn't work out for "Speed Hunters or Track users" on this forum, but for what I'm after I'm happy.

On the rack side, the rods are too long I'm afraid and will need to be shortened t fit, I'm estimating about 7Cm's each end but this wont effect the racks function as the rods are extremely long to start with.

I don't think this will work for a standard Z cross member without some serious new bracketary work at the mount points, they are 65mm inward from each rail and use solid mounted bolts, no bushing material at all.

The steering angle looks great, however I know I'm going to have problems nevertheless, so in my secret armory of suppliers, I'm planning to have a double Cardan jointed steering rod made up these blokes in Perth who Ive already spoken to.

Power steering pump wise, either the Benz pump, or maybe an electric Mazda pump, that's still up in the air.

Cheers

Good evening Zedophiles.

I know I'm boring you all to tears, but until that engine mount gets here (tomorrow) and I get the drivetrain to ARC on Thursday there wont be much tangable to report.

So I thought I'd throw the cat amongst the pigeons, Ive been doing some shopping therapy, and came across an interesting set of door mirrors for $195.00 delivered, they are heated and fully remote, off the current Camaro.

Opinions?

Keeping in mind how big the Camaro is compared to the Z (and that side mirrors seem to have gotten bigger over the years regardless), are you sure they won't look disproportionately large? Otherwise they look nice... Photoshop them onto a Z  ;)

John, what about the width of the rack itself? This needs to be somewhere close to the distance between the LCA mount pints to avoid bump steer issues, around 610mm from memory.

Those mirrow would look great if not too large. Im on the lookout for a set aswell and came accross some nice f1 stlye carbon ones, roughly same price from states

Thumbs down over here. Having driven a Camaro they are enormous cars with enormous mirrors, that and I don't like how angular they are in comparison to the Z's flowing lines. Maybe if you can find a pair of late model 911 mirrors they might work better?

Hi David, take it you meant the pivot points ? although I'm at work and cant confirm exact measurements, I believe from memory when I was measuring it up at the sellers premises that it was within or close to the 610mm range, will confirm when I'm next at the secret man cave and can get a tape measure on it.

Teddy, Dat and Agno, thanks for the opinion's, Ag's brings up a good point, they do seem overly large, may stop in at Kevin Dennis Holden and check them out as they sell new Camaro's.

As far as the angular shape, I think they flow pretty well, probably will match well with my intended front air dam set up, but they seem to sit / mount in a similar body line as the S30 which was one thing i picked up on first.

Will get back to all as to just how Americana up-sized they are soon.

Now, have to raise this point as I will be away for all next week in QLD and NSW on business, and I'm running short on time.

The chassis day is scheduled for the 17th and 18th of November, I know a lot of you stuck a hand in the air and said you would come lend a hand with the fabrication so on, for me that's the half of it, it would be great to share with you all a bit of my build, talk a load of Sh*t, down some drinks and good food and take the Mickey out of Simon for a day or two.

I'm not holding anyone to their initial expression of interest, but I need to know if its worth while going ahead if there's no interest.

So could I ask anyone who would like to commit to coming to post in this thread, I'd really appreciate it.

Cheers

Hi John.

I'm still coming but can only do the Saturday, Ive got to be in Singapore Monday morning which means flying out Sunday.

What do you need in the way of tools and equipment? MIG, cut off saw, jacks, engine hoist, probably need to post a list so we can bring extras or anything you don't have.

Assume you've got steel lined up?

David

You are a legend, but seriously i cant take you away from your family 2 days before your departure, do feel obliged, I know what its like to travel and have commitments, not a good thing.

If you want to come down for a few hours it will be a pleasure to have you there.

Apart from what I have, I was going to buy a gas mig / tig, cut off drop saw and a bench drill for some accuracy, apart from those theres nothing else needed to be honest.

I couldn't drop off the motor today as the engine  mount was in customs for 3 days, didn't arrive yesterday as expected, so drop off is tomorrow mid day now, will take some pics and post tomorrow.

The question you posed about the LCA pivot measurements, I will measure them tomorrow, but from some notes I took looks like they are at 640mm, how much of an effect that will have I'm not sure, being 15mm each end.

Cheers

Saturday is cleared away and no problem with the family.

I will bring a cut off saw and MIG and a few other bits and pieces.

And you know I will reciprocate and when the time comes help with whatever you need done.

Cheers

John

P.S. do you think the additional 15mm either end on the LCA pivots will have a dramatic or negative effect?
