Sirpent Posted November 1, 2012 Author Posted November 1, 2012 All good Simon Been there, done do that, know where youre coming from :-) Quote
jamo240 Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 P.S. do you think the additional 15mm either end on the LCA pivots will have a dramatic or negative effect? John...if the distance between the rack end ball joints is different to the distance between the lower control arm (LCA) inner pivot points, then Ackerman and bump steer are affected. 15mm per end would be considered significant. Incorrect Ackerman is what makes tyres squeal on polished floors in car parks at full locks...it's the component to geometry that toes the inside wheel more than the outside so the two radii match...if they don't, you get tire squeal or shuddering as the two fight each other..mostly an irritation toward each steering lock. Bump steer is created when the steering arm goes through a different radius to the LCA, and causes the wheels to toe in and/or out as the car ranges through the suspension travel...bump steer is a problem at road car speeds, and will cause dartiness and instability under brakes. You need to get rid of it in the range of suspension you use (eg it doesn't matter so much if it is out at full suspension droop). On the Nissan race cars, we would adjust it so it was within 0.005" throughout the used range...but road cars aren't quite that fussy (0.020" a side would be fine, between 1.5" above ride height through to full bump). Suggest you either draw it up if you are handy on CAD to understand the effect different pivot points will have on geometry, or try to replicate what is there now as much as possible to avoid getting into problems with geometry. Sirpent Posted November 2, 2012 Author Posted November 2, 2012 Thanks Jamo Did the check this morning when I was prepping the engine and box for transport to ARC and it's actually 620mm so 5mm either end, guess we will see what need doing but I'm still moving ahead with this rack if at all possible. Trip across town went well, but it took me almost 3 hours to load the F*ckers onto the ute tray, secure it all and get across from the west to Mordialloc, nevertheless we all made it in one piece. A couple of pics from today's run across town to ARC, John was kind enough to show me some examples of what I can expect in the adaption along with the twin plate race/street clutch and flywheel they will be making up hopefully starting next Wednesday. New bling, shame it will be hidden under the bell housing. Cheers John Quote
KatoKid Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Nice crutch! John, have a look at your rack and see if its easy to shorten up, just be conscious of steering lock though. I took 13 mm off each end of my WRX rack to ensure it matched the Z rack and it was very easy to do. Quote
peter t Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Good to see you are back into it and going ahead in leaps and bounds. I am just fixing up all the things I did wrong but the Z is going well and driving it every weekend. Quote
Sirpent Posted November 2, 2012 Author Posted November 2, 2012 Hey Peter Good to hear, Ive envied you on many an occasion, cant wait to be able to do the same. I was just telling Kato on the phone, around this time next year the old girl and I will be celebrating our 30th anniversary together, but I havent driven her in 18 years, its been a long time between drinks and I seriously doubt anyone here has owned a Zed as long as me or not driven their car as long either. Cheers John Quote
benny Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 john i may of missed this but are they also doing your bell housing adapter?? Ben Quote
Sirpent Posted November 2, 2012 Author Posted November 2, 2012 Yup Adaptor, and full clutch flywheel assy, I get it back all bolted up. Cheers John Quote
benny Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 very nice!! great idea too... should speed it all up. did you end up winning the motec on ebay?? Quote
Sirpent Posted November 2, 2012 Author Posted November 2, 2012 Alas Missed out by about $250, it sold for $3750 Quote
benny Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 im sure another will pop up... you've still got time!! Quote
Fairlady Z Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 Cant wait to see this bad boy all bolted up. And congrats on 30th anniversary. Thats impressive I had my 14th with one of my cars in Sep. not as impressive as you but mine is still driving Quote
Sirpent Posted November 7, 2012 Author Posted November 7, 2012 Just a heads up Spoke to John at ARC yesterday and due to a number of backed up jobs, the conversion wont be ready for the 16th of november. At this stage is looks like be ready the following Friday, so the 17th and 18th has now been cancelled, updates as they come to hand. John Quote

Sirpent Posted November 25, 2012 Author Posted November 25, 2012 Hey John. Whats the go??? We on for this weekend? Hey David Still not finished, hopefully this week sometime, and some pics in the nest few days. Quote
Sirpent Posted November 25, 2012 Author Posted November 25, 2012 Also Bit the bullet again and purchased some seats off EBAY this evening Picked up the HSV Coulsons for $675 which is about 1/2 the going rate. The cloth ones on the left are the EBAY items, the ones on the right are leather trimmed which will be the plan in the futrure. Cheers John Quote
benny Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 nice looking seats!! have you sat in one before?? they look supportive!! Quote
luvemfast Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 How will they fit, size wise? They look quite wide and normally go in supertaxi's Quote
dat240z Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 Nice with leather wrap, but they look mighty wide? I doubt you will have much reclining action as the side bolsters will hit the 3/4 pillar near the door Quote
Sirpent Posted November 25, 2012 Author Posted November 25, 2012 nice looking seats!! have you sat in one before?? they look supportive!! Yeah Benny Spent some time behind a HSV some time ago with the same seats, very supportive and comfortable. How will they fit, size wise? They look quite wide and normally go in supertaxi's Ahhhhhhhhhhhh yes, wide back rests, but the bases are pretty standard, what makes them look even more bulked up is the fact that the adjustable head rests are so huge and wrap down into the lower cushions, I'm sure you will appreciate their comfort from the passanger seat when I take you for a drive one day Simon, be the best Taxi drive you have ever had. Nice with leather wrap, but they look mighty wide? I doubt you will have much reclining action as the side bolsters will hit the 3/4 pillar near the door Not that concerned as even at 6 feet tall I always found I never set the seat all the way back and still had a fair bit of room behind my driving position, so hitting the rear wheel well wont be a concern, as far as the quarter glass frame / pillar I'm pretty sure there will be plenty of clearance. Cheers John Quote
dat240z Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 Nice one, height is fine as im 6"3 and fit not worries, but the shoulder bolsters on the a pillar will be tight Quote
Sirpent Posted November 29, 2012 Author Posted November 29, 2012 Short but sweet update A picture paints a thousand words, hopefully these will also prove I'm not full of sh*t and a dreamer. The adaptor plate has been completed along with the machining of the Benz Bell housing and the photos below taken today show more or less the finished product, John and the boys have done a great job and I was smiles from ear to ear. Came up against a problem with the way the c32 amg crank shaft position sensor on flex plate is set up, as you will note, there is a ring gear built into the assy, attempting to replicate this on a billet fly wheel along with the ring gear would have been complicated and also very expensive. The boys examined the flex plate and determined in it unadulterated form that they can build a fly wheel that will sandwich onto the flex plate allowing for perfect alignment with the original mounting points and associated dowels. So, in the next day or so the flywheel will be machined and I should have some pics of the assy including clutch assy for you all. Cheers John Quote
benny Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 looks awesome john!! these look like the guys to go to for this kind of work. Hope you havent departed with to much cash though it is a necessary component in the project. Quote
KatoKid Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 Wow! Thats a funky flexplate. Trust the krauts to make it complicated. Quote

Thats a funky flexplate. Trust the krauts to make it complicated. Spot on david but look closely, the flex plate is made from stainless !!!!!!!!!! If they had spent less time over engineering their war machines and producing mass quantity instead of low volume over quality I dont think the "Z" would ever have come to fuition and we would be a Bavarian vehicle forum.
