Bit of a prick, I don't like his method. If you get an offer and accept it then sell. Don't dangle it out there looking for a better offer.

Happened to me once. Made a deal to buy a Z31 two seater (rare to find one in Aus), shook hands, went home, was going to pick it up on the weekend and bring cash. Get a call from the seller, he's been offered $500 more from a guy over east, and if I want it, i'd need to beat the other guys price by another $500. He kept saying I need the money for my family, have to think of them first, should have left a deposit, blah blah blah. Maybe I'm too old school, but you shake hands on a verbal deal it's as good as done. You don't welch out of it because someone offers you a little extra cash.  I also knew he got the car from a wrecker cheap, and was telling me lies about getting it from a mate.

He was probably bull-shitting the other guy for more money too.

+1 agree I don't like the tactic, when I bought HS30 00150 several people tried to offer more for the car after the auction ended on eBay, to the credit of the seller he stood by his word and sold me the car for the final bid price, we both agreed we thought it would go higher but at the end of the day everyone had an opportunity to bid and it went for what it did. Deal done etc..

He is a good guy but looking at going on a holiday in the near future and there is a lot of centimental value in it for him so just chasing what he can get.

I think it's only fair you get it, I don't think sentimental value counts for shit, he let it rot. How sentimental can he be about it?

Yesterday I posted a link to a wheeler dealers interview. http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,15636.msg165948.html#msg165948

and I can't believe I'm about to quote Mr Brewer but I agree with him on this point.

Drive News: What do you think about the car owners who sell you all these cars that are barely alive?

Mike Brewer: Do you know what? Truthfully, I get a bit angry with people that they can own such a car that I’m excited about and I know that Edd will be excited about and they could let it get into such a sorry state. Because as a genuine car enthusiast and classic car owner myself, it’s not that hard to look after a car. It’s not that hard to throw a cloth over a car or a blanket. It’s not that hard to put a car in a garage and make sure it’s covered for the winter. It’s not that hard to change your oil and to service a car and to maintain it regularly. And that makes me angry. When I go and see people’s cars they’ve just trashed, used and abused, I think that’s just a crime.

I will fill in some more of the story tomorrow after I know what's going on. I was disappointed when he told me he was taking offers until I came to pick it up as it went from the joy and also nervousness knowing I was finally getting a 240z to that sinking feeling all in 24 hours. I have met the guy a couple of times and still think he is a good guy because I know the circumstances behind it all. I'm not too confident I will get it tomorrow as it will just be my luck the way the week has gone so I'm trying to not get too worked up over it until I am on my way down there tomorrow.

why do you keep defending this guy....

He IS NOT a good guy... he is a scumbag. You drive a hour and a half to go see this car, on multiple occasions, and he agrees on a price and shakes your hand on it, and now wastes your time and says he wants more? He doesn't respect you. He should have done more research before listing the car, and priced it better. Not agree on a sale price then decide he wants to try and screw more money out of you. I know its hard, you don't want to tell him where to go, as its a pretty decent price for what you want, perhaps you wont be able to find another deal like that for a good while, but this isnt right.

Last sold around $5k, make him an offer. Doesn't look like any progress has been made since it was last sold.

Now aren't you glad we keep track of these things on this site?

Looks like the car is going to Melbourne as he has had 2 better offers from guys down there.  Unless they fall through before Sunday arvo I won't be getting it as I will pull my offer then.

Sorry to hear  :( It's disheartening that there are sellers like that out there. No problem trying to get the most you can but set a beefier asking price and work back from there... don't make people bid for it!!

Speaking of which... maybe we should have a little fun of our own and have a couple bystanders bid on it too. Raise the price to the point where he turns all the other genuine buyers down because the price is too high for them and then ends up with no purchaser at all (or maybe will come calling back to you). Hehehe. Anyone in? ;D

I say turn the tables a little, give him a dead line on your offer (say midday Saturday) as your looking at another 240z in much better condition.

This guy has made a deal, then changed his mind due to pure greed! The 7.5k car looks better to me also.

Tempting but not worth the effort. He is a jerk.

What about the Green 240z I'd go for that anyway being an earlier car and I like that original green.

Posted

Green one would be out of the price range I think. It was hard enough to convince the wife to let me dip into the savings for this one.

I guess it wasn't meant to be. Hope it goes to a good home.

To be frank if 2k will make or break it you won't get far with a rusty z. You'll spend 3x initial price fixing rust. That is the reality. Not gonna sugar coat it.

If you do some of the body work maybe you'll save money on labour etc.. Good luck but maybe evaluate buying a wreck vs a rust free restored example.

Its the initial outlay cost, Build cost isn't the issue as that will be covered over time. I am building a 2+2 at the moment so I do understand build costs involved its just I have always wanted a 240z to put back to stock (big plans for the 2+2 though). I have spent over 10k in parts so far in parts for the 2+2 and she isn't even full stripped yet.

Well the car is official sold now I just got the text. I wonder if it will end up here.

I'm sorry to hear about that, I wouldn't get hung up on it though, there is always another deal and often a better deal around the corner. Save a bit more cash and when the right deal comes along you'll be able to make a cash offer straight up.

yeah at the start of the week I wasn't expecting for the opportunity to own a 240z to be on the table. I am just going to stick my head back down and work on the 2+2 and see what happens.

Tempted to send him an email now offering $10k :)

Yeah I'm a little annoyed. Him getting the 4.5k for it doesn't bother me just the bit where it's now going to Melbourne considering he told me he wanted the money and it gone on the same day hence why i was heading there today as he wasn't free on Friday.
