Hello Guys,

With the success that Les Collins Racing, PMC and Lurch have had with The Green Hornet running on 50mm Mikuni carbs, I was looking at the 47mm OER carbs which are the updated version of SK Racing carbs. The question is:

Since the carbs can be ordered with either Weber style jets or Mikuni style jets, is one style better than the other. I believe that the Weber jets would be easier to purchase if rejetting was required ( which would be neccessary). Do the Weber jets and Mikuni jets have the same tunability through the rev range. Is one style better than the other for fine tuning.

I will have to make the decision at some stage as to which way to go. ITB or carbs. I like the OER over the Webers due to the external adjustments.

The new engine is a 2.9L with a lot of Datsun Spirit parts, Kameari, BHJ, etc. Head is fully worked with  DSI .560 thou cam and oversize valves.

Opinions would be appreciated.

Hey mate

I was seriously considering going Oers also however on speaking with 2 mechanics that have had a fair bit of experience with l series engines i was advised to stay away from them as they can be a bastard to tune. One was jim milner which most of the Brisbane Z guys will know and the other was a bloke who has raced datsuns and had a prepped z currently from MIA in Dee Why.........

Mikuni 44PHH will be more than fine.

Hadn't started mine since June, until 2 nights ago.

Allow fuel pressure to build, pump accelerator, turn key.......... Starts!

Haven't had to retune them at all since dyno tuning a few years ago.

Just make sure you have good quality linkages.

Did they give an opinion as to what would be a better choice?

Miks if you can find/afford them..... Jim is very practical and I think is a weber fan simply because parts are plentiful and cheaper and they get the job done pretty well however, Miks just work really well on the l series apparently both of them said this. Im still waiting for a set of 44s to come up but i think that could be a while. I am in by no way a mechanic and carbs are most definitely not my strong point hence i listened to those in the know:)

from memory it had something to do with float levels???? it was over 6 months ago that i spoke to them both

I agree with Simon, you dont need more than 44s unless you are pushing over 300hp at the crank. I have 50mm Webers on mine and there is a bit of a flat spot down low due to lack of air speed.

Les has had 2 new sets of OER's (45's & 47's with Weber internals) come through the shop recently - both required remedial work to make them run correctly on the vehicles. Getting them to idle was a major hassle.
They have all the hallmarks of being cast/made in china. Best avoided IMHO.

Either buy a new set of Weber's (45mm for up to 310hp, 48mm over 310hp) as the current Spanish items are quite good, or try & secure a set of 44PHH Solex's for that creamy progression...

(Don't bother with 50PHH's, they are too big for any normal engine, are rare & incredibly expensive - like $7k+...)

If you've got the extra cash, convert to EFI, as it still has the noise, but with the better driveability & economy.

Lurch what would be the conversion cost you think? ive heard 10k mentioned a few times when everything added together and including a decent EMS cost.....efi hardware has gotten a littlwe dearer since i first considered it with the addition of the jap manifold.......

Hi Guys,

Drivability, economy and affordability is what I am after. ( I really don't want much. ::) ) I was impressed with The Green Hornet's carb setup, but I realise that a lot of time and professionalism went into having all the components working together to achieve the drivability that it has. As much as I like the idea of old school, ITB may have to be the answer. EFI make great kits, but a bit on the expensive side. Otomoto has the OER ITB kit for $2790. Jenvey also make a nice DCOE twin throttle for that triple carb look. I would prefer to deal locally when the time comes. Haltec and Motec make good electronics. Basically I want something that is user friendly that I can go shopping in one day and put on the track the next.

Just picked up a set f fully recoed Italian 45dcoe-q13 x 3 from a shop in Geelng, fully choked, jetted, clean as a whistle, new spindle bearings, $1400 the lt inc postage.

Go for Italian Webers,

Next would be the Spanish, but the 152G mdel, with the 4 progression holes,

Next would be,,,,

OER's with Weber setup internals?

Dellorts?

Expect to pay around $2000 AU for a set of Triple Mikuni / Solex 44's. Price will depend a lot on condition also.

EFI is the way to go unless money is short, it's a very good long term investment if future upgrades are likely too. A good aftermarket ECU can run everything engine related and do handy things you have not thought of yet.

Jason let me know if you want to sell those webers........hint hint

Sorry,,,,

They are now sitting on a Kameari manifold, alongside some ceramic coated Stew Wilks headers, and all being fitted onto a 240 tomorrow,,,,

The owner s rather chuffed!

No not that much.

You can get it done with EFi Hardware TB's & a MoTeC M84 for $7k if you fit it yourself.

LCR tuned my race car, L 2959cc triple 45 Webers. Awsome tune , runs like a dream. Doesn't coff or sneez, pulls clean from 1500rpm in 5th Gear. What else could you want?

Posted (edited)

Steve @ LCR has finished assembling & bench jetting today, these 47mm OER's (with Kameari manifold).

Hi Lurch,

Do these 47's have the Weber jets or Mikuni. What does Les prefer or are they similar through the rev range. They do look sweet.

David.

If weber and solex jets are interchangeable on OER carbs does that mean that you can use weber jet in the solexes (mikuni)? Makes sense when you read it like that!

I just bought a set of 45MM OER's, the castings did not look that amazing actually quite poor (they are not installed yet). However now that I know what I'm up for, would it be worth sending them off to LCR? Or should I sell them off and buy some DCOE's?

Posted

Hi Guys,

From what I understand, the OER carbs can be ordered with either Weber or Mikuni jets, but they are NOT interchangeable. As Lurch has said, the Weber jetted model would be the better way to go due to the internals being cheaper than Mikuni parts.

It looks as if my questions have been answered, so thank you to all who have commented.

I've just 'finished' tuning a set of 45mm OERs I bought new from Kameari and the only issue I've really had is leaning at the upper end of the lower circuit.

Changing to Weber pilots with smaller air correctors have helped.

My idle setup haven't caused any issues so far.

What other issues have people had with the OERs?

Posted

My understanding was that OERs were Japanese made, however from Lurches comments it appears they are now Chinese made. Either that or they are cast in China and assembled in Japan so they can be called Japanese made. If the latter two are the case it sounds like Webers would be a better option, preferably the Italian variety. It never ceases to amaze me that companies continue to send things offshore and then the quality drops, devaluing your brand. In the case of things like these that is where all of the value of your brand is. Eventually people will stop buying your stuff when they realise the quality is rubbish, or they will pay a much lower price for it. Anyone know any more on the OER situation?
