George Posted May 29, 2016 Author Posted May 29, 2016 We have to be careful with stuff like this, as the different departments within the Nissan group and outside suppliers certainly had different dating systems and QC stamps. It can get confusing. The letter 'G' should - logically - stand for the month, and the number after the year identifier should - logically - be the day? If the numbers never went higher than 12 they could be month, so I'm going to have a look around on my cars and see what I can find. I have two 1970-build cars that should be good candidates for cross-referencing. I'm getting too old to trust my memory...! Did they use that dating format on other parts Alan? The letter followed by year and then day? I would question why they needed to put a day on a part. Seems inefficient and totally unnecessary but who knows what kind of systems they had in place and if those systems required days to be used. Quote
HS30-H Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 Did they use that dating format on other parts Alan? The letter followed by year and then day? I would question why they needed to put a day on a part. Seems inefficient and totally unnecessary but who knows what kind of systems they had in place and if those systems required days to be used. Yes, they certainly used that system on other parts - depending of course on what outside supplier or department within Nissan made it. Knowing when a part was made (and probably who made it too) would have been a big help in Quality Control should problems/issues arise. But in relation to the (white) wiring harness labels I'm afraid I've dropped a clanger. I had it in my head that the letter denoted the month (as indeed it does on other components) but in fact it doesn't! I got that wrong. Having had another look at some wiring harness labels on my own cars that I've been messing with recently (and which helped to confuse me...) I can see that the number following the year denotes the month. Sorry... I just looked up an old thread from classiczcars.com where we disussed this very topic: http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/15396-discover-various-dateuse-cross-reference-method/ I'll put up photos of some of the labels on my cars here later, when I've downloaded them from my phone. One is an April 1970 car, and one is a July/ August-ish car (as best I can work out...) so should be useful examples I hope. George 1 Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted June 8, 2016 Administrators Posted June 8, 2016 Attached is a photo of my wiring harness from HS30 00150. (rear tail light harnesses) It looks like September 1970. The car was compliance dated as November 1970. So that leaves a 2 month lag period from when the car was produced to being imported. All the various checks I've done seem to indicate an August/September build period for #150. George 1 Quote
HS30-H Posted June 8, 2016 Posted June 8, 2016 I'm having trouble uploading photos from my phone (I'm getting close to throwing the damned thing out the window at this point...) but they probably aren't needed at this point. The green and red coloured markers on the white harness labels carry extra detail (possibly day of the month and something else) but I don't know anyone who has decoded that yet... Quote

Brabham Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Please slow down George you are making us all look bad! Looks nice, amazing given how it was when you got it. A testament to Paul's workmanship. Safari Gold should look good. Quote
Cozza Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Wow, what a transformation!! Congrats to both you and Paul. Any eta on when it's likely to head back to Sydney? Quote

A testament to Paul's workmanship. Safari Gold should look good. Don't fret Alex, once the car gets back to me the project will come to a grinding halt... Just enjoying every moment with the little fella and not fussing about getting other things done. At some point early on I recall planning out a schedule of milestone events which had me driving the car by 2020 for its fiftieth anniversary. That might still be possible but it's looking highly unlikely at my current rate of spare time. Wow, what a transformation!! Congrats to both you and Paul. Any eta on when it's likely to head back to Sydney? All Paul on this one His team is of metal wizards are amazing. Should have the car back Oct/Nov. vorn70 1 Quote

jeff43 Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 The race is fairly well on now George. I worked on my car for about 3-4 hrs yesterday - first time in about 2 months. This gives me motivation to get on with it, now if work/life stops getting in my way I will be right. George 1 Quote

Administrators gav240z Posted August 1, 2016 Administrators Posted August 1, 2016 I'm glad you decided to go with Safari Gold, I know in the beginning you were considering other colours but I think it's the correct thing to do on such an early car. I'm jealous of how far along your bodywork is. Wish I was as good as Ledge and fast! Quote
George Posted August 2, 2016 Author Posted August 2, 2016 I'm jealous of how far along your bodywork is. Wish I was as good as Ledge and fast! To be honest I'm jealous that you're doing it yourself! That was always my plan and as you might recall I wanted to do the TAFE course. That plan was out the window the day I bought the swiss cheese. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted August 3, 2016 Administrators Posted August 3, 2016 The only problem with doing the work yourself is you see all the flaws in the work because you know where they are! For me owning more than 1 240z means I sort of need to learn because I wouldn't be able to afford to pay someone else to restore them all . Either way I'm happy to see such an early HS30 build come back from near death. The other thing about doing the work yourself is that you can't just throw money at it and watch it progress, you have to pull your finger out to get stuff done and see progress. I'm hoping the tax man will be kind to me this year, if so I should be able to finish off the bottom end of the motor and possibly rebuild/refresh the 71A box. Really need those milestones to be hit to keep you motivated. CBR Jeff 1 Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted September 7, 2016 Administrators Posted September 7, 2016 Hey George, I'm trying to find the thread where you showed your radio disassembled TM-1081ZB(S), I was talking to someone who can restore these radio's and he mentioned that complete disassembly for re-cad plating the housing would add significant labour to the job. But after seeing the results on my Rally Clocks I think it's a must. Do you have a link to the thread or any information you can share regarding difficulty separating the circuit board and housing? I think a couple of wires are soldered to the chassis correct? Photos attached of sexy cad plating. . Quote
