  1. Real lap times, last time, on Natsoft, for all to see! It's a great shame not to have any close to engine parity cars there. Most of the Z's running in the Sprints these days are into the. " my dicks bigger than yours" thing with engine capacities. All are 3 litre plus, or they are just Sports Sedans/Outlaws, which wont be acceptable, due to just not being "in the spirit" Mike Mc's new Group S car will be at 2.6, mines at 2.8 ( current lap record holder in Historic class at QR Clubman!) Rob Switzers car is also Group S. Any suggestions as to who else is close to engine parity?
  2. Gordon, Richard (zed74) refers to the 2008 event, where I got a call from the event promotor f a Muscle&Sports Race weekend, they had plenty of cars for the Group N Tourers, but with only 6-8 Group S cars, they went a-looking for "grid fillers" Well, didn't we have a ball! No CAMS full circuit race licenses, no lgbooks, basic safety's, and it was on! The Tarmac spec Zeds, in triple carbies, big brakes, fat tyres, were up against one Group S spec Datsun Z, two Shelby GT350 Mustangs, a Marcos, a couple 308 Ferraris, and a half dozen Alfa 105's, all on skinny rims, drum brakes on back, stocko fronts, and stocko sealed standard carbied engines! Full on Flagto Flag racing, we put on a show, even trying to come up with a cunning ploy to setup a Malachi Crunch on the Mustangs off the line, but their bulk wheelspin buggered their plans to outdrag the Zeds out front! Lee Falkiner in his 3.0 triple webered bg braked slick shod orange Z took out three races, Me in my Group S car was close second, and a win in thefourth, even managing to outgun Lee's Z to lead on lap 1 or two, but the six inch tyres get a bit loose, and he drive around me! The Tarmac Zeds did very well to keep the Mustangs and Ferraris at bay, finishing very close behind in each event. What was experienced by the non Group S guys, was overall very satisfying, and it showed to the Group S guys that non Group S cars can and do run well together. We've been trying to get this up and running again, and it would semm that it comes down to numbers, ie lack f Group S guys, who WANT to race, but cant, as we need minimum grid numbers for the event to be viable. There are some, however, who are somewhat aggrieved that the non-historic cars may run again!!! Stupid viewpoint, it worked before, it'll work again!
  3. How are the WA Transport authourities with slip on type spacers? If OK, you may need to look at longer wheel studs ( NICE Products, are Australian based, purchase via Auto Accessory shops) They do a 44mm and a 75 mm, but check first your knurling diams and depth f shanks. The 75 mm can be cut to length. F not OK with slip ons, ( 8mm thick bolt ons are not ,ade) then you could try,,,,, Super Glueing the spacer to the backside of the wheel,,,,, That way, when the wheel comes off, the spacer stays with it! Bit naughty but it has been done. In motorsport applcations, it is recommended to mechanically fasten the spacer, usually to the wheel hub face, by way of one only countersunk machine screw through the spacer, into a threaded hole in the hub. A M5 or a M6 suffices. ( here comes the "insurance will be void" comments,,,,)
  4. In olden dayz CAMS manuals, i often wondered what "knave caps" where! The rule in the manual stated that "wheel knave caps are to be removed"it turned out they were referring to these things. Where the heck "knave" came from, I have nfi! Prolly from old Cobb &Co wagon wheel days. There ya go!
  5. I've just had a call from the organiser of the Prod Sports caregory for the Historic Racing Car Club of Queensland. There may be a possibility, once again, for non historic lgbooked Zeds to race ( not sprints) ie flag to flag racing, at Qld R/way on the Clubman circuit, over two days When? Last weekend of August 2015 Cost, between $270 and $325 ( min grid 15, max grid 20) Requirements f car, roll cage, usual safety's ( logbook not needed) Driver requirements, full safety's AND a FHR/HANS device. You purchase a Single Race event licence from QR-RACERS No need to be a member f any CAMS club. You will be racing with and amongst Group S Historic Production Sports cars, of various marques. This is a grid filling exercise as the HRCC are very aware of the low number ( approx 12-14) of Qld based Group S cars. It is an excellent opportunity for a modified Datsun Z to get involved in two days of racing, and possible Friday practice, and it is at very low cost! Wonderfull opportunity for all the usual sprints runners to move up a rung! Any queries, ask/post below
  6. What doing that does, is increase the velocity of the airflow, through the smaller diam chokes, and this really helps to atomise the fuel into the air/fuel flow. The "stumble" is a result of lack f air velocity due to cam overlap and duration, due to the bigger slower chokes. Look at your port diameter at head face, what 35mm, tapering down to valve bowl, the intake manifold, tapers from 40 down to 35, the 40 mm diam Webers are perfectly alright! You've got six x 40mm holes, necking at 32. Now equate that to a single butterfly throttle body on a fuel injection car, at stock, 48mm, but opened up to 53mm diam, or, two x 37.5 mm Hitachi SU carbs, that we run on the Group S Production Sports cars. Using a 2,6 or a 2.8 litre stock stroke bottom end. These are on par in performance to any triple carbied car, with same capacity engines!!!
  7. All AusZcar forum members could just simply turn up to the Z CCQ Nationals, as spectators, entry into Morgan Park, as a spectator is totally free, we can all park together, and enjoy what is being put on by the zccq. Plenty of other Datsun enthusiasts will be doing jst this. No need for cams lcenses or being a member of one particular club over another. Should be a great weekend to catch up and check out the cars.
  8. SOME folks are really starting to understand, and appreciate, the amount of time, effort and workmanship, that goes into building, restoring, enhancing and ensuring detail, on these cars. Whereas others still think, adamantly, that anything ver $20k is a ridiculously high price. Supply, demand, and, rareity.
  9. I used to be a Real Estate agent, i'd get my mum or dad, or brother or sister to buy really cheap houses, from unsuspecting sellers, then flick 'em on to the general public. Double whammy game. That's a bit frowned upon in some states nowadays.
  10. Koni Reds are an oil shock, they are fully rebuildable, and to start off, run at softest setting. I have two sets for one car, one set had never been fitted ie;New, I sent them, as well as the 12 year old very well used and raced on set off the get Shock Dyno-ed. Both sets came back with same graphing at both softest and hardest setting. Fair Y impressed. Agents are in Melbourne. Will bang again. A+.
  11. Dubbo! Thats pretty central to all! Or Temora, just lile in the old days of the various Stares Nissan Car Clbs! We even had George Fury run one of the factory Stanza's in early '80's
  12. Mike, i have taken some comparison measurements of the O5L and a P90 Both of which I am selling. Intersting that the short side radius hump in the ports is not there on both ( better flow) Ports on o5l are small, but easy to open, as are valves. The chambers are at 37cc! On a 1.5 mm overbored 260 block, there 'd be a fair bit of compression, even after unshrouding the valves! Welcome to come by for a looky see!
  13. Maybe try putting wanted ads on Ozdat website, or on DownUnderDatsuns page of facebook. Lots of ke,bers there with all kinds f Datsuns!
  14. and here I was, thinking we have another engine put-er together-er in Brisbane,,,
  15. Can be caused by a decent sideways slide into a gutter. This can deform floorpan at pins that support moustache bar. Does not take much of a whack! How is the rear toe readings,,,in,,,on each side?? Wheel backspacing same on each side? A commn fix to pull toe on one side is to cut the front of the rear arm, and pull it inwards and re-weld plates over the slit. Fitting eccentric lower rear arm bushes can dial a bit of toe in/out, but not a great deal. Delrin is a more forgiving hard plastic to use, you'll need a machine shop!
  16. Who/where was motor assembled by?
  17. G'day! There's a couple on here that are down your way! Watch out for that Hodgo fella,,,,, Nah, he's good, keep an eye out for any Tassie get togethers, you guys are blessed with some good roads.
  18. What pistons were in the small bore L24? IIRC they were flat tops, or the very shallow dish? The CC's may have varied by 1 or 2 cc due to later valve sozing and other protrusipns. E31 was the gun head. Bit Rocking Horse do do though!
  19. Nissan got away with using the E88, notching it for injection, etc as it was fitted to a2.4 litre block running the standard 7cc volume dished pistons. Any larger engine capacity and the compression would jave been a bit high, this is why later or 2.6 litre or 2.8 litre heads had larger combustion chambers. The O5L has small combustion chambers as it was only fitted to a 2 litre engine, 7cc dished piston for low comp, and ran a tiny weeny Turbocharger, L20ET. Stick that on a 2.4/2.6/2.8/3.0 and same effect. It's all to do with cylinder displacement, bigger volume, more stuff to be sqashed up, into a small size chamber. Gav, yes, one day,,,, i should pull them out, and put them both up and take pics. When will this site allow me to upload pics direct from the Ipad? ( image file size too large,,,,,)
  20. I have half of that adaptor. Bolt it on to your standard exhaust mani, and then you get your exhaust shop to run the twin pipes off to rear. Can put in a post bag.
  21. No, chamber is the same, the later E88's just had the notches for the njectors. Ports are all same size. Mike, I have a virgin O5L head here. And a P90, to compare it to alongside. Can sell
  22. The O5L is like a baby version of a P90, but without the stupid huge combustion chambers, but same shaped short side radius! Using carefull application of a file, and then some 80 grit belt sandiner paper, and a hammer, the casting mark can dissappear. " Casting number, what casting number" By rights the injection version of the e88 head is incorrect, the pictures in the homologation documents dont show the injection cut outs. Yes the regs are crazy, bit the challenge is to make the best of it.
  23. Have a good read of the sticky post in the Engine section on here about Camshafts A Must Read. That should give you a bit more of an idea as to what specs may or may not be suitable. A starter could be a 68-70 degree spec this could be done as a regring. For new cams Clive Cams in Melbourne can supply. For second hand, some on here may have some sitting under a bench. I have around a half dozen of various all as regrinds, i can sell you one.
  24. Gonna need a fair bit mre info than that! Usually four cylinder Ford Escorts talk in terms of Stage 1 or 2.
  25. CAMS Australia has! It was result of a long running submission for Historic Production Sports Cars. Surprised me that it got through! A 280Z called a "Zapper" had Nissan Dealer fitted option of larger rims, and the CAMS position here s that it must have been either Factory fitted, or Dealer fitted. Crazy hey! Thats how Porsche gets the big rims, MGB's get a Weber DCOE, Morgans get alloy radiators and five speed boxes and bigfer carbs, Shelby GT350 ( Mustang) gets bigfer Kelsey Hayes calipers and discs and bigger rims. All due to "Dealer Fitment" which has to be proven. What did DT Dobie in South Africa, and there was a Datsun Dealer in Woking, UK, what did they fit to new cars? Whether it was sold to private, or not, or "given" to very talented drivers and navigators, it does not matter, we need to onow what was fitted to New cars, by either Factory or Dealers, and proof of this. If we here in Australia can get this information, it can be submitted to the Governing body, here, who, for many years tend to "go it alone" when it comes to rest of the World. New Zealand, under MSNZ allow the Option Parts to be fitted, but they must be petipd, with no need to prove fitment onto a New Car, ( unlike us in Australia!). I note a USA 240Z recently competed in Japan, at a Historic meet, but was ruled illegal, as it had fitted a 2.4 litre engine, when it was supposed to have a 2 litre engine. ( a particular year period, or class pf car/category??)
