FWIW I will not use the BMW balancer on my race car, We had one on John McKeons red and yellow ( ex Lex and Larry Greenhalgh lightweight 240) and a race at Qld raceway the outer ring separated from the centre, it turned the fan belt, and was only held in approx position by the fan belt not coming off. Only indication was red and yellow lamps coming on at around 7000 rpm up back straight. If you get one, get it CHECKED for any rubber de-bonding Now, I use a BHJ, it will never separate the inner from the outer, and is superior at approx $800, exxy but it's insurance. Sorry to cause a worry, but, hey, just get them looked at, same for stocko units too.

At Sandown I think in the 1.28's? and at PI 1.58's, and Hall's thing was running stock? 1 3/4 " Hitachi SU's, I think he was asked to put them back on, and at one stage I managed to stay in front of Peter for around 7 laps, just behind the Porkers of Geoff Morgan and Stan Adler, (3rd place - Oh what joy!!) Then,,,,,, I looped it going up to Lukey, Peter got me, but I recovered to finish fourth. It was a 11 lapper earlier this year 2009 Pete was pretty surprised I got him, and said I was a bit cheeky running with my lights on high beam too!!! He's one cool fella. Drives real nice too. -
Oh, here's a couple of tubers, part 1 and part 2, from May 2009 Historics at Eastern Creek. The Blue Z No 28 is Jason Lea. Qld, the White Z is Brian Potts NSW, and the yellow Z is Peter Lang also NSW. I had flat spotted my fronts, the car was pushing on corner exit, and I was wrenching the nth degree out of the thing to keep up with Pottsy, and keep the Alfa at bay through the twistys, and then Langy comes scooting through the lot of us. The Porsche just wouldnt move over. Footage taken from an Alfa gtv. Thanks Danny Gatto. ( Mick's son???) Note the engine note at the start, and when the Alfa's window (RHS) is next to the LHS of the blue Z at some parts. Bit noisey! Some rpm's there too !!! Ahh it's just an engine.

Yep, Running the red Datsun Sports 2000, looks like I'm in for a bit of competition for fastest historic logbooked car. Last year I managed to get the win, and the mob that organised the event last year, was supposed to award me the overall event outright win, cos they were trying to attract the "historic" mob back. See how we go. Stick your head in under my carport and say G'day! -

Couple of mates from up Qld way, The green one is Jon Siddens, Targa Tasmania Datsun runner. On the odd occaision I have just managed to be a bit quicker than Jon at one of our local Qld tracks, and, the other is John McKeons lightweight red and yellow 240, which I have driven for JohnMc at a couple of events. Both these pics were from "Speed on Tweed, a couple of years ago. I ran my Datsun Sports 2000 there, and on the Saturday, (two day street sprint type event) I was second outright, but by the end of event the open wheelers and the special type cars got a bit quicker, I was relegated to eight outright !!! -

The box is a close ratio internals with a .83 fifth to give the motor a rest down the long straights at Eastern Creek/Phillip Island/Bathurst, externally it is the usula Lseries type box but with a very heavy spring externall detent to prevent me accidently slipping into reverse on the downchange from fifth to fourth, which does happen when you are getting bounced around amongst traffic and the bumps that tracks seem to develop. Consequently the reverse idler is half worn away and I have to hold the stick when reversing cos it jumps out! The engine and box mounts are "captive type, ie no wobbly rubber here, but very stiff with a bit of bracing. The diff is either a 4.111 or a 4.375 R200 full plate LSD depending on tracks. The rims are stock, yes stock 6x14 280 zx and I must use a control tyre for Group S, some of the pics show a wider rim/tyre, these are used when I am not in "Hysteric CAMS Rules Mode !!) Tyres for Historics are either a 185/60x14 or a 195/60x 14. yes I have a lot of fun at 1070 kgs and approx 260horse at the fly -
This ones a "built" 280Z as per USA spec 280Z, that has the different to 240/260 front clip, and with the indicators on the grille instead of the lower metal sections below the bumper. The bumpers on the USA cars weigh in around 45kgs with all the 5MPH crash stuff and shock absorbers, fortunately CAMS rules for Group S Historic prod Sports say "Bumpers may be removed" The 280 weighs in at 1070 kgs, it has to run a R200, cos that's what it says in the homologation docs. Motoer is a L28 injection, with some very carefull work done on head/inlet/throttle body/AFM and airfilter flowbench testing, and it runs the 6 into 1 collectoe extractors. I'm allowed a max overbore of 1.5mm, and am using CP forged slugs, They are a stock forging for a Honda, but with the last two machining stages at CP cancelled and I then finish the tops off. Rods are forgies but much longer than the stockos or the early 240's (133mm) and the rod stroke ratio gives me a safeish 7600 rpm limit. Crank is stock stroke, but has been knife-edged, along with the BHJ balancer and the steel flywheel I've managed to shed approx 14 kilograms from the rotating/reciprocating mass. It is a f54 bum and a p90 top, with a bit of angle milling here and there and a few mm's taken off the head. It has to run avgas, and wont idle below 1000, the injectors are told little lies with the help of some changes to resistor valuesInjectors are made by the same manufacturer as the stock injectors !! This is the same as changing jets on SU or Weber carbs. The throttle body, and inlet plenum MUST REMAIN EXTERNALLY STOCK says CAMS rules! So externally they are, internally thay are not! Some pics Eastern Creek with a Alfa GTV where it should be, and, Yep the DeTomaso's just in front, but going into Hell corner ( Mt Panorama) I got on the inside and made a Zed car 15 foot wide going up Mountain straight, suffice to say when we crossed the line I was over 200 meteres further in front.

They do require a careful gear change, not a hard and fast style of slam'em through, as per circuit racing. I find the later type boxes better for circuit work, and bits are more easily obtainable for them. The shifter mech is a more postive feel. I do certain stuff to the internals to prep for racing, mainly for longevity and insurance, pretty common stuff, but the majority of g/box shops will look at you in a silly way and will think what planet are you on! The ratios in Lurch's box are as close as you can get to an Albins type close ratio set, and at $450 is very very good buying when an albins 1/2/3 will be around the 2000 figure, plus a rebuild cost. I like this pic, Phillip Island 2009 historics

OOOHHH thats a secret!! I have been tracking the 120y for around 15 years, prior owner knew I was interested, and he lived in Qld, and as the Y was a "Victorian" car, there wasn't too many prepared to go to Qld to get it. I'm ex Victorian and used to own its twin sister WHAT ANOTHER ONE, but wait, the other was never finished and GF never drove it, I just set it up with five link, big struts a 2.3liter L series and holinger 1/2/3 and terrorised the tracks/circuits with it, it has the flares etc that the PROPER car has, but will never be the PR$OPER car. It is still around but in a very dilapidated state. FJ 24 bits, are possible, but cost plenty, fortunately the motor is still very complete but No 2 had been sleeved many years ago, and with use and heat expansion/contraction had broken around the top of the sleeve, leaving lovely bits of metal on top of the 93mm slugs ( yep, 93 not 92 so it is 2390cc's !!) they bounced up and down very quickly at 9000 rpm into one cylinder head. Head is recoverable but I will not weld it, it has been skimmed 4 thou and is straight, block is decked, and awaiting some fresh JE 93.2mm slugs, and for insurance I have a set of Manley forged rods coming. ( The stock fj24 rods are fine) every thing else crack tested fine, crank is still at stock fj24 spec. The thing had only done five events with GF, and the Toshiba Rally sprint, then sold to Kevin Roben in Wagga, done a further 19 rallies, one with Geoff Portman driving, Geoff couldnt beat Kev Robens stage times!!!, and then in the early 90's it went to Qld, where the motor and box was put into a 1600 for circuit work , it ran as a Sports Sedan in the mid 90's. When I got it I made sure it was all there, and with its CAMS logbook etc. The box is a Holinger helical gear but dog engagement and really weird ratios, better that any of the option 1/2/3 types and well suited to the car and it's use. Rear is a works Stanza type full floater five link with 5.1 Nisma monster H190LSD, ( Ihave three of these monster h190's for my Dato Sports 2000 race car they were fitted to the Group B 240RS rally cars) -
When I get around to deciding to sell the midclose or/and the ultra close boxes they will be around the 3 to4 k mark, they are just RARE I can set up a regular L series with similar midclose ratios ex Japan manufacturer, ( rather than Albins who cut gears off c/shaft and press fit/weld new ones on, and supply new mainshaft gears, and depending in input drive driven ratio can play around with individual gear ratios. This sort of gives one a gear for any corner for track work I've got three of these early 240 boxes, the ratios are far better than later stuff. Buy Lurch's box, people you will be happy, BUT the synchros and dogs will annoy the crap out of you !!!!
-
Just for interests sake what sort of dollars are talking here? It should have the 2.937 first, 1.858 second, 1.311 third, 1.0 fourth and a .96 top? I am fairly familiar with these, and the mid close and ultra close ratio boxes9 I am thinking about selling some too!, maybe later dunno)

Classic Alpine in 2011 ? Ye Old BP Trial??? Classic Adelaide??? Targa Tasmania??? Now if only I could schedule a few other events in between down in Victoria, I could make a bit of a motoring holiday of it. Where/What is the gravel hillclimb?? I used to run at old Morwell, Lakelands ( lilydale) Mt Luera way back in the early 80's. I would be happy to answer any questions about the Fury 120Y. Fire away! -

It replaces the dinky factory fitted rubber band that is supposed to stop the diff flying up into the floor when the front diff mount finally snaps, it is made from 4mm thick steel strap, has two adjustable 30mm diam rubber snubbers on screw threads with lock nuts, and the tubes that your standard bolts go into are welded onto the ends of the strap and uses the existing brackets and bolts that the rubber band is fitted onto that attach onto your tunnel. With it fitted, and the rubber snubbers adjusted down onto the topside of your diff, it stops all up movement of the diff nose under hard acceleration. When you see it, you will say, "Oh Yeah, why didn't Nissan do this instaed of the rubber band, what a great idea" I have only one, dont ask for pics, I can work out how to do that, and yes I read the instructions on how to post pics, too hard for me. Just buy this You will be happy $100 pick up, or plus $10 posted anywhaere in Oz jason 0403 071 294

Jamie Drummond tells me that George isn't too well ATM, and may be a bit reluctant to come out too often. The 120Y is undergoing a bit of a rebuild, and will unfortunatley miss this years Calssic Alpine, Lets see, it is on in 2011 !!!!! It's first shakedown event will be a local tarmac/shire dirt roads club event next May based arounf Toowoomba, It has been invited to attend. The majority 99% up here in Queensland don'y "GET" this car, it is really only the southerners that "get" it, hence my desire to travel long distances to run it down south in the future. I also dont mind Phillip Island/Sandown, but thats in the Z jobbie, but gee it's a long way to go for a few races, Pharque "m keen, ay! -

Pics, ? I cant for the life of me work out how to do the upload/download, gallery thingy, yes, I read the how to, but it all goes hazy and blurry by the third rule of instruction. Yep, I got the 120y It was built by Jamie Drummond, under Howard Marsden's OK at Nissan, using a few odd bits and pieces lying around from the GroupC Bluebird Turbo program, and some bits from Nissan's 240RS Group B rally cars. The materpiece is the Blydenstein UK FJ24 drysumped donk, On Dave Bailey's dyno (Sheparton Vic) back in mid 80's was showing 290 at 9600, and 250 ft/lb at 5500 on 55 DCOE Webs. It was built to beat the BDA Escorts, and it DID ! I will never drive it to it's full potential, and it will come out for the odd carshow, and a few classic rallies etc. But this is a Z car forum, so we shouldnt digress! (I don't mind) The Z's next run will be at Sandown Historics November 6/7/8 2009 Any Vic Zedders going to have a look, swing by and say G'day!! They have given me No23, its a dark blue jobbie. -
Race a 280Z ( not a zx but a USA spec 280) in Historic Group S racing, last three or so years, also race a Datsun Sports 2000, that has race history back to May 1968, and and old Datsun 120Y rally car fitted with a FJ24, Holinger dogbox and Stanza works ass. One Geaorge Fury used to punt it around the bush at night. And a couple of other Datsun Fairlady/Sports 2000's There is a good youtube by youtube user "aewebster" titled "PI08 GroupS Race 2 front and rear view" etc etc of my 280 spanking yet another Porsche. Also try looking up "EasternCreek HSRCA May Group S 2009", footage from a Alfa GTV of me, Brian Potts and Peter Lang getting blocked for eight laps by anudder Porker. GRRRR I'm a member on a few other Datsun forums as well. Jason L

Nah not really a racey one, just warmed over a bit. The ones I use in the race car are a little more developed!! This ones just a spare out of a road car that I used to own. Guy bought it, and did a rb25 conversion ( silly guy!!) and sold me the L28 complete If only I could work out how to post pics real easy without using some imagehost site, I can put pics up of the car. Guy now wants to sell it, along with a 1968 Fairlady Z with a L20A motor ( it cant be called a 240Z!!)

Have one, rebuilt with dyno sheets, out of a 260 coupe, it has extractors, cam, flat top pistons etc, complete with loom and ecu. ( fuel injected) Strong motor. On 15x 8 rims stock gearbox, r200 4.1 lsd with semi slicks was doing 63 seconds at Qld Raceway Clubman circuit. $1000 Can crate it up and truck to you at your cost, or, take a trip to Brisbane with your box trailer, I can crate and load for you. jason 0403071294 or pm me
