positivetennis Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Just curious to see how many long term s30 owners there are in this community. Usually these days in modern times we tend to change cars every few years, either to update or some other reason. How many of you have owned an s30 almost since new? How long would you envisage owning yours? Are any of your younger relatives hoping you might leave your car to them. What would make you part with it, would an identical remake of the 240 or 2000gt do it or does a 370z or ft86 do it for you? Just interested in what people think on this topic. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted January 23, 2012 Moderators Posted January 23, 2012 I've owned my current 240Z for almost 6 years, and first zed was in 95. Only time I'd part with it was if I was about to lose my house or similar situation..or death do us part. Quote
positivetennis Posted January 23, 2012 Author Posted January 23, 2012 Zedman, what was the zed you owned in 95 like and how does it compare to what you have now? Quote
PZG302 Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 I owned my racing zed for 15 years. Only getting rid of it because I wrote it off on the track. My first zed I owned for about 3 years before I put it on the shelf and upgraded to the race only zed, body was too far gone, ex rally car, to fix up. The flex was shocking even with a full 6 point welded cage. If I get another one it will be a road car, but my charger, mx and 200 will keep me going for a while Quote
positivetennis Posted January 23, 2012 Author Posted January 23, 2012 Is the charger a VH, VJ or CL. My aunty used to own a white VH, they were a great sounding car. How would you rate your charger compared to the zed if you had to view it from an ownership road car perspective ? Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted January 23, 2012 Administrators Posted January 23, 2012 I bought my first Z at 17 years of age. That is nearly 13 years ago now. God I am starting to feel old haha. Anyway I've had a 260z 2+2 which was a write off due to another driver. That was around 19-20 years of age. My current 240z I got when I was about 21 and have had now for 8-9 years. I don't plan to sell it EVER! if I can avoid it. Since starting this website I feel like I'm stuck with Z's for the rest of my life haha. Quote
zed240au Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Ive owned my 240z since 1986 no plans to part with it now nearly 26 years Mick Quote
620Z Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 I have had my Zed for around 16 years or so and bought this one off my brother. Spent too much money to part with it now. Besides it's almost where I want it and drives great. It has almost always been on the road. Only goes off for a month or two while big the mods are done. My kids will drive it some day. They are 8 & 10. It should almost be finished by then. I could be tempted to upgrade to a late model R35 GTR some day but would still keep the old girl. My bro Gordon has had Zeds for maybe 30 years. Not sure how long he has had his last one? Maybe 20+ years. It's his fault, he got me into Zeds and why I have no money. Ha Quote
Retro Z Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 I've owned my 240z for 2 years now. Previously had a 260 2 seater and two 2+2 for a few months each. Sold my modified r32 gtr to fund my 240z and so far have never kept a car for more than a year until I got my 240.. Had been a dream car for me for years and will definatly be a car i'll hold on to. Similar position here too! I have always wanted one and this year I was lucky enough to get myself into a position where I could finally afford one. I had to sell my first love to fund it (my skyline) but the feeling I get when I drive my zed makes it all worth while. I nearly sold it a couple of months after buying it because I was worried I had gotten myself in too deep (probably still have haha) but now I don't think I will ever sell it. Quote
Roberto Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 I recently found the hand-written receipt of when I bought my zed in 1994 for $3950. For the first few years it was my daily, then it spent 8 years in hibernation. Now with a garage and some $$$ i am slowly fulfilling my unmet childhood needs. Quote
dat2kman Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Current 280z Group S race car, approx 5 years, Previuos 260 2seat White with blue stripes, 1 year, guy i bought it off missed it so much he HAD to buy it back! Prior to Z's there has been various Datsuns in my ownetship since 1980, At least 4x 1600's, 2x180B SSS, 2x 120Y ( current one is a 240Y though!) 2x1200 coupes, R32GTR Godzilla ( not road reg), 1x Datsun L series engined Formula Libre open wheeler race car, 1x abberation of normality, a Datsun 1600 sports sedan with a 13b rotary, and, five x Datsun Sports 2000 convertibles, still have 3 of them, one is a very famous all original circuit racer, still in its 1969 racing specification. A reasonable cross section! Quote
dalee Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 bought my first 240z in 1999, after seeing one driving around London of all places. I have had one of my current zeds for 7yrs now. Quote
Jk_zeder Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Owned a '79 280ZX 2+2 for about 6 months for the track, only actually used it for 2 months before buying a '71 240Z bare shell which I have owned for 10 months and will be on the track next month. So essentially, I'm a freshman Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted January 23, 2012 Moderators Posted January 23, 2012 Zedman, what was the zed you owned in 95 like and how does it compare to what you have now? Strange enough they are almost the same now spec wise; started with a late 77 2 seater with an L28 and by the time I sold it had ITB's, LSD, cage etc. Young guy who bought it then started to de-tune it and make it more "road friendly"? Still is around owned by an NDSOC member with an NA RB30 hybrid (RB25DE head). Current 240 is ver similar to how I had my 260...it went so well, I modify each zed I purchase! Quote
saxon Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 I got my 260z about 6 months ago. I would never sell it. I'm hoping I can finish all the aesthetics within 6 months, and then all the mechanical side in another 6 months after that. I don't want a 7 year project! Quote
PZG302 Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 Is the charger a VH, VJ or CL. My aunty used to own a white VH, they were a great sounding car. How would you rate your charger compared to the zed if you had to view it from an ownership road car perspective ? The charger is an early 71, XL number 271 if I remember correctly, so late september early october build. To rate it as a road car is going to be pretty hard as I am spending a fortune on it as a checque book restoration to pretty much concourse condition with a few extras. My first charger was also a VH, and stock but very tired. It was a fun car for the time I had it and I did some great road trips 6 up in it as it had the front seat with the the flip up arm reat to make a 6th seat. It had a stock 265 in it that was fun, but not a serious performer, plus it drank like there was no tomorrow, my mates XB with C4 and 302 had better economy!!!! The road Zed was different in that it was a very selfish car, that is one passenger only if they wanted to be scared witless on a twisty road. Being an ex rally car, it was noisy, harsh, uncomfortable for long distances, but a hoot to drive, especially on the rally tyres on a wet night, steering by throttle was way too much fun!!!!! Quote
Wayne G Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 about 8 years. Did not have the room to do the resto at my place so we bought a new place, one with 2 sheds! Progressing slowly because I need to pay for the place so will do most the work myself. Quote
Patch Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 I bought mine in 1986, I just came over from NZ and a mate had one, quite liked the look of it but way out of my price range, I think 14k over there, I found one here that was sitting in a car sales for 7k had been there for a while and wheels got stolen off it, was not moving at that price and I walked in with 4k cash and made an offer and got it, They were collectable every where in the world bar Australia I drove it for about a year then noticed rust, so I started a restore. Found the car had been bogged and full of foam, so I stripped it and blasted and found more rust, I replaced all the rust and done the motor up, things went bad with work and put on hold, the car was not collectable here then, so thought I would just leave it until they do, I found this place because I had given up on it and decided to sell, Sale fell though I had a chance to look around and see they are finally coming collectable here, so am keeping it and will carry on the restore after I finish my house build. gilltech Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 Early'74 260Z 2-seater - owned now for 27 1/2 yrs Quote
be-zed Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 First Z was a 240 purchased in 1980 .Had it till a semi hit it, I then moved all of its running gear into a 260 shell in 1989 and still have it today. Quote
NZeder Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 My first Zed, I still have, purchased it back in 95 had a few others during its time off the road which has been over 16 years now off the road......wow need to finish it.....ok just checked when I took the car off the road not been 16 years......but 13 years so that is still about 10 years too long. Gordo Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 What a great topic. I bought my first zed in 83. And have trophies from NDSOC going back to 83. My next zed was 1988 that I raced successfully as a V8 till 1996. Then sold it to my brother Craig as I wanted to go Marque Sports Racing. So I bought a nice zed to turn into a race car, but I discovered it was way to good and sold it for a good profit and found a more suitable 240z which I still race to day. I have bought 3 other Zeds ,only one of which I decided to do up as a project car. the Blue 240z. This was a three year rotisserie build, and been finished for three years and never had Rego on it ,or been driven yet, only around the back yard. Click on Image for bigger photo. Quote
EMPRACING Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 Ive had mine about 17 years it was my first car and it has so many memories attatched to it that i couldent sell it in all the years it's been sitting while i messed with v8s 8 of em!!!.....my boys 12 he thinks its his already he better pray they change the mod plate restrictions on p plate licence rules haha modern cars like my ve ss are 1000% better cars in a lot of ways except the cool factor in my eyes but then we do tend to get biased dont we i cant see me ever selling this thing even after its back on the road.
