I was sitting in traffic this morning with a Lotus Elise in front of me, a 350Z on one side and a 370Z on the other... and I got to thinking....

If you didn't have a Z car what would you own it its place??

For me it's a Ford Capri Brookland 2.8i - beautiful shape, sweet leather interior, fun to drive ... typical of Ford to get the Capri concept right and then stop making the damn things.

Second place to a RA22 Toyota Celica.

Had an Evo 8 not too long ago...keep thinking if I should get one again or go for an Evo 9. Great cars to drive in the wet or dry nad can even take the family if need be.

I have always liked the Datsun 2000 Roadster from the late '60s.

Looks better than an MG, much more reliable and would be as easy to work on (probably even easier) than a Zed.  ;)

I'm lucky, got all my toys so pretty happy.....

71 Charger - being built to better than E49 spec and some updates to modern technology, well running big brakes and the head unit will accept an Ipod for tunes, but won't really need that with a set of triple webbers hanging off the side of the 265 hemi.

89 NA6 MX5, perfect for the weekend away up the coast and I can carry off the mid life crisis look pretty well with the cap and cigar as I cruise Hasting Street in Noosa.

07 XR8 ute - nice daily to drive and tows the Z easily, and makes all those good noises when you stand on the loud pedal

The cars on the wish list are:

DeTomaso Pantera GT5 - the perfect Bogan Supercar with the old 351 up the back with the Italian looks and the stick on A9X looking flares for the body kit.

BMW M6 635CSi coupe, just like what Jim Richards raced for Frank Gardner, and finally

BMW 3.5 CSL batmobile from the late 70's. One of the first function over form cars built for racing.

I hope that was said in a sarcastic tone?

From what I understand, they are a pain to work on.

eg

To remove gearbox, the engine has to be removed first or with it.

However, yes. Very sexy.

Grew up with these as a kid, barely remember a thing though  :(

My current driver is a 1984 Toyota Supra, but if I weren't restoring the Z, a Honda 2000 would be pretty tempting. Shame about the cost of the things though.

The Supra is great because its stylih, comfy, practical, reliable and still good fun to drive. Makes a good noise too..!

Ideally I wouldn't have to lose the zed, but considering mine is pretty much just a weekend warrior I've considered a few alternatives and will purchase in a couple years I suspect:

Mk.4 Toyota Supra. As above, VERY nice cars. Hard to find a non-molested version tho, especially an aero. My Dad has one, but as a 93 model it's starting to show its age.

M35 Nissan Stagea AXIS. Take a V35 skyline, make it a station wagon and then give it to AUTECH for some extra mumbo. We're talking 3.5L V6, 4wd, 6 speed manual, full leather, sport suspension, twin sunroof, twin sat nav/TV screen, 18" Chromies, blacked out tint, 18 (something silly) speaker BOSE stereo and more than enough grunt to pull a zed on a trailer. Just gotta find space for a trailer....

Evo X. This one would be playing with the devil cause I'd probably modify it enough to compete outright in the local supersprint series and then it wouldn't be a very comfortable daily....

Evo 8. Cheaper and lighter than an Evo X but not as nice/probably too old when it comes time to buy. Similar issue with replacing the zed and then wanting to turn the zed into an improved production car....

V37 Skyline. Plain old nice, luxurious, good looking and rare.

V35 Skyline. Cheaper than the V37. Maybe too old

VW Sirocco R. Gotta a thing for hatchbacks and station wagons and this is one of the best, plus extra points for rarity. Live the Evo X, a bit exxy for a car that will see less than 5000 k's a year

series 2/3 mr2 are pretty cool, i like the mid engine thing lol, rx7's, the ta22 with mustang back looks brilliant then add a ag4ze (from memory) ke35's, like the fastback 1600 vw. wouldn't mind a m3 of any year. If the budget was there mustang would be brilliant xD even a old ford xc (the cool one) pre kingswood holden, anything old basically with the stop and stare look is brilliant :D

E46 M3 for me.

The wife (or your Nana) can drive it to the shops and then you can do sprints or other such stuff on the weekend.

Unbelievably capable car.

Yeah, I agree with most of that, although I'd go with an '81 personally... :P

female version i hope  :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

According to the bloke who used to rent the factory over the road, you can get 'adult' blow up sheep/goats and a few other animals....  Maybe Lurch meant one of those?

As far as 'replacement' cars go:  I've often thought lately that if the Alfa (current zed substitute) gets put off the road, first in line for use as a daily drive is a Supra RZ.

But then again, I've also always thought at some stage I'll buy a Jag XJS.  I have this condition where I believe an English car with lots of electrical crap in it, and a thirsty v12 might actually be fun.  Probably only have it for a year at most, but at some stage I must get that out of my system....

And there are many other cars I'd love to own/play with on the list - an Alfa 147 GTA (or, for more rarity, a 156GTA wagon) would be a good daily, there was a 1939 Willys ute on Ebay a little while ago I thought would be great with a supercharged VH45 in it, still love the idea of a Stagea 260RS....

I shouldn't be surprised that you'd come up with that.... your tastes do seem equally as strange as mine.  Because I'm really silly, what sort of nick is it in, and how many is a couple (maybe a topic for PMs)?  Although I really should be focusing on other things to put in the garage, like machine tools that weigh and cost as much as a car.....
