Let me know if I'm boring people...

Not boring!  More rust, more welding, where's that door skin walk through?  More intricate Z nerd detail please.  This is the closest thing to satisfaction I'm getting since going back to work.  :(

I was at Gordo's this afternoon and we were talking about the work on your car Lurch. The big question will it be done for Feb 2010 Tassie? Make the most of your time off and make big headway while you can mate.

Thanks Guys.

Craigus, I'll be there come hell or high water. In undercoat if need be!!!

Jeff, I'd LOVE one & I'll get one, one day.

But at the moment I can't justify getting one as I'm not doing coachwork...

I finally finished the rust repairs this long WE, but between the on again/off again weather & the olds having a very distracting

'Inebriated Geriatrics Party' I really didn't get a lot done... ::)

Unfortunately one edge I welded did 'suck' in slightly even after cooling the weld down (damnit!), so it'll require a thin skim of filler :(

(BTW my new toy is teh awesome!!!)

Good to see so many zed getting the cancer removed from them so we can see more of them on the roads/tracks for another 40 years :) happy B'day to the S30 this year

I've got some minor panel straightening to do to the rear beaver panel, but yeah, I need to make some decisions soon...

Well done Lurch, looks very neat in the photos

Don't forget it is a 30 year old Z, not a new toyota!  ;)

I need to make some decisions soon...

Half your luck!  :-[

I'm now back working full time, so progress has been slowed >:(

But I'm dismantling a few more bits off the car atm, in preparation...

Thanks to Dimitri I now have a pair of 225/50/17" tyres.

I had them mounted on the Rota rim's, removed the rear springs on the Zed this morning

(to get the car low enough) & trial fitted the wheels on the Zed to see how far I need to pump the rear guards...

It doesn't look like I'll need to pump them out far - maybe 20mm at the most :) (after I roll the lip up/back).

Pic is at the desired ride height - now to start playing around with pumping the guards...

Looks good Lurch. I have 16" as I did not really like the look of 17" on a zed as they always look over tyred IMHO however this is the first time I have seen 225/50/17 ie a larger side walls and it does not look as over tyred as I thought. So I might have to get a set of Rota RB-R from Ben in the 17x9.5.......hmm will have to think about that....more tyre choice in the 17" these days vs the 16's with only limited 245/45/16 to chose from.

Did you ever end up making a flared gaurd template out of cardboard to see what sort of shape you need to cut and press?? Unless that was someone else. I've been thinking of whether to pursure making my own steel weld on's.

Posted

No I don't think I'll be needing a template - just a tape measure to see how far they have to be moved.

My, the 225 50's certainly fill out them guards! If you wanted to use the 50's instead of the 45's the rolling radius of the 45 series is 317.15mm compared to the 50 series 328.4 according to a site that I frequent for anything to do with wheels and tyres;

http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html

which will mean you will be a bit faster than what your speedo is showing. Original zed tyre (based on the 195 70 14" RR is 314.3mm) Check your tyre sizes at that site to make sure its all within tolerances. You will find that rolling radius calculator on page 2 about a quarter down.
