C.A.R. Posted July 28, 2009 Author Posted July 28, 2009 Mossy - that is the one downside to that train of thought... Johnny - If my current employer can't get me any more work in the next few weeks, I might just do that. I intend to keep this car indefinitely, so I guess I should suck it up & just do it properly the first time... Thanks for all your input guys - it really help Quote
Mr240z Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Get your best Zed buddy to give you a hand....His car looks pretty good.. If god can't help you. His 2nd in charge might..... Quote

zedevan Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 ...get a roller out but seriously, next time there's a meet up i'll bring along one of the door's i've painted up and half assedly polished and left for the last 1 or 2 years with no wax on it, and even they look nice enough. Specially for the price, and ease of repair although, for 6.5k i'd be tempted to go bare metal and just get it sprayed in a nice metalic, assuming that doesn't involve u spending forever taking it back to bare metal. is there any guarentee to the work? a guy at uni had an alfa that had had a 7g bare metal job on it before he bought it (for about 8g, lol) and rust came back within 5 years so it was resprayed again for free. ...but then again i dont want to have to worry about my 6.5k paint job whenever i leave my car somewhere or do some work on it Quote
Zedback Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Guys if you're talking about 2 pac then I've got no idea, it's toxic and not for the DIYer. If you're talking about acrylic then everything is in the surface prep. I really don't understand why people don't like acrylic, it's really easy to work with and really easy to repair if you do something silly. Runs you just sand away and respray, same with any surface prep failure (bugs, gum sap, etc). If you do something particulalry dumb like spray on a humid day when the sun is setting and your whole boot lid blooms... You just sand it back and have another go... even you could do it Lurch. (Crappy scanned film images of my MGB http://s729.photobucket.com/albums/ww294/zedback/1965%20MGB/) Only thing there Lurch is they might say if something goes wrong with the paint they won't be responsible because they haven't prepped it themselves. Surface prep is everything for the color coat. You can also run into problems with products that don't react well. If you go down this path then you should ask your painter what products they use and use the same. Quote
RBZ 260 Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 oh please lets not go into acrylic vs 2pac debate on here as well lets just say if it was good we still see new cars painted with it and crash repairers using it all the time. most two pac these days are lot safer than what it used to be few years ago. still not good but not any worse than acrylic. again to clarafiy things cause i know someone will come back with another comment.2pac primer/filler is the one u want to have less contact with its slightly more dangerous and u need good ventilation. for an odd job here and there u dont need fresh air supply mask. even the crashies dont use them. we bashed this to over 20pages on another forum. long story short all paints are poisonus. no matter if enamel acrylic or 2pac period so there is no "SAFE" paint. u still need a good filtration mask with correct filter. make sure u got good ventilation and take regular breaks. ive used acrylic before all the time. once u try 2pac u never look back. way easier and way better and quicker outcome not to say lot more robust. respraying and preping a car is not a small job. may as well if painting it paint it with something thats going to last. though im still for Lurch to do it himself im sure he can do a very good job ( I believe in you mate ) . get a crap box or see if ur relatives need a free paintjob to practice on. u wil improve. 3 paintjobs later u should get realy good. youll figure out most of the traps to takle your car, with realy good results. Do what i did restore push bikes, car trailers, metal furniture or just get some odd car panels and start practicing just look at it this way lurch. ull save at least 5k that u can spend on other goodies on the car. C.A.R. Posted November 11, 2009 Author Posted November 11, 2009 Quiet you! There's actually very little left to do on the shell - I just have to get it on a rotissery, blasted, then painted. HOWEVER due to lack of time with being employed full time, other members Zeds being worked on (AND being booked out past the new year!), & other projects needing more urgent attention here, the Zed is going to be all packed up & stored away for a while. :-\ Lurch..........
