Administrators gav240z Posted July 31, 2015 Author Administrators Posted July 31, 2015 my knowledge of original spec is pretty lacking as mines is so far from it i didnt realise Aus cars had fender mirrors? wing type id imagine not the bullet type? Always thought it was guys wanting the jdm look Not just JDM yo! But AU market also got them, I have also seen Swiss cars with fender mirrors. This topic has been given a good flogging already (by me) http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php?topic=13234.0 http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php?topic=13650.0 http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,14248.0.html I'm not sure if our cars were ever shipped with the bullet style mirrors or if cars here were retrofitted with them as a replacement part no. for the originals? But I have seen some old footage of a 240z in the 70s in an Australian dealer lot wearing the bullet mirrors also. Found the link to the video. Doesn't have flares, doesn't have fender mirrors, doesn't have a l28 with triples . To top it all off its a bad colour with a even worse colour interior! Paint it red, flare it and put on some watanabes could ask 45 for it Quote
oldmates260z Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 The last couple that went for +$35k seem to be cars that had few owners, low k's, very good condition (no wear or weathering). They must be being bought by collectors rather than guys that what to work on them... This one with the interior done, engine bay touched up, suspect the suspension refreshed and a nice set of original wheels would be worth +$35k Quote

Old Man Z Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 The Z in Lithgow is sold . Spoke to the owners wife and apparently the car accidentally was posted on web before the magazine and was sold before the hard copy version had hit the shelves! Reckon it was sold within a few days. Quote
cracker Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 I suspect the car in Lithgow is the same one that sold for 38/45k on carsales - the original buyer flipped it after putting the hubcaps back on for originality's sake. Quote

RB26DETT Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 Good spotting there. I totally agree its the same car. The reason the plates are different is because NSW to VIC rego. Both cars having 54000 miles and also both side door mirrors the same etc makes me think its the same car. In the ad when it was 30k it does say say it comes with original steel wheels and hubcaps. Administrators gav240z Posted August 2, 2015 Author Administrators Posted August 2, 2015 Yep agreed flipper the Dolphin bought it to sell on... Quote
GongZ Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 Flipper puts together quite a good ad and must have had an original 240Z radio on hand too; from Just Cars ad - "all original except alloy wheels and radio" from Carsales ad - "Original radio,..." (ad also shows an original radio in one of the photos) ** Edit - the plot thickens! PB260Z posted this is in the eBay Parts thread; A set of original 260Z Alloys with unusual centre caps. I recognise the caps but can't remember from what? Starting at $1,000 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Datsun-260Z-Alloy-Wheels-X-5-Rims-/171869463435?hash=item280437e38b The description included - "Were on a concourse 40,000 mile vehicle" - not quite 54,000 miles but close enough. Image from this ad attached (exhibit A). If you look at the photo in the JustCars ad (exhibit B) , it has the 'mystery' centre cap badges on the 260Z mag wheels. The photos in the Carsales listing (see exhibit C) showed the early 240Z hubcaps which have the same centre emblem - so this is where PB260Z remembered the caps from and it also confirms that Flipper swapped out the wheels (and sold them for a tidy sum it seems) before re-selling the car. Administrators gav240z Posted August 2, 2015 Author Administrators Posted August 2, 2015 Good detective work. If you read the original ad though.. Concourse winner, all original except alloy wheels and radio, have originals and 4 hubcaps, has done 54,000 miles, drives like new, 5 spd manual, the best there is. I interpret it to mean have the original radio and hubcaps... Now Flipper might have bought the car with the intention to keep it and had a change of circumstances that meant he/she had to sell it. Can't blame someone for 'properly' advertising a car for sale though. Quote
GongZ Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 I take your point about the radio, the wording does imply that the original radio was part of the deal. I also concede that sometimes its easy to mistake a dolphin for a shark. Quote

Would be best to see car in person and examine from there. Quote

chris240 Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 If anyone is seriously interested, I can check it out this weekend. (No muppets). Dunno Gav, Those pics of the front end "seem" ok. Quote
74zzz Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Ive noticed that the restored 240z in toowoomba is still for sale and is now on Evilbay....... http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/240z-Datsun-Fairlady-Not-260z-280z-300zx-c210-240k-s2000-skyline-gtr-gt-/281766105524?hash=item419a9191b4 Really surprised it has be available so long. Besides the cheap fender mirrors and rotas what do you think is holding it back....anyone seen it in the flesh..........matching numbers seems to have a lot of the good bits...... and hes gone into a fair bit of detailing of the underside also...... too modified? i thought a lot of guys would be drooling over this......maybe there are but their wallets just aint that big? Quote
d3c0y Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Not too modified, just not modified correctly and really this thing isn't that modified. If you changed a few things on this car it could look 100% better. For me the things that detract are: If you are going to have a modified Z do you want a stock L24? Z on horn pad Z on rear deck carpet Center console missing parts Door handle (passenger's side missing parts) Gearshifter missing original button Missing the rear strut covers Not lowered Black trims are so 90's/2000s Wrong offset front wheels Front wheels are RBs and the rears are RB-Rs Crap fender mirrors Cheap knock off parts and a car that needs more money spending on it to be right don't = $44k in my opinion. I'm not even anti-rota wheels. I owned a set and thought they were great for the money, But you can't ask Watanabe money for them. Quote
74zzz Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Yep appreciate all that you have said but I would have thought a worked/mild matching l24 with miks would be the way to go if you have the original engine??? I know heaps do the l28 (me included) but its rare to still keep hold of the matching one after the swap. 2 grand difference for wats blacked out chome isnt great but all the rest are little cosmetic things that are an easy fix.....a few hundred bucks. but you are right for these prcies you wouldnt want to have to spend anymore. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted August 6, 2015 Author Administrators Posted August 6, 2015 Dunno Gav, Those pics of the front end "seem" ok. Look harder, compare the radiator support with other cars...What do you notice? Like I say, doesn't make it a bad car, both of my 240z's have had a minor front end nudge. But this looks like the radiator support bracket was removed? Suggesting maybe the support was replaced? In which case it might have been more than a nudge at the front. Even if the front end needs work to 'correct' it I still think it's worth 20K but the buyer should know what they are buying. Quote

I agree with your comment on the L24, however they are only 40mm carbs, relatively common and less desirable. Apart from that it's just a standard L24, no headwork or cam in the description etc. I have an L28 too and have kept my matching number L24 under the bench, wish it wasn't a thing because it's flogged haha. $2k for wats is not realistic; Otomoto was selling them for $2200 and that's without tyres. I think if you wanted to correct all those little problems properly the bill would add up. A good set of fender mirrors will run you $500 these days, so that's nearly $4k on just wheels, tyres and the mirrors. But we are in agreeance and i feel these are the reasons the car hasn't sold. Quote
74zzz Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 hmmm only 40s was going by memory and thought they were 44s.and maybe naively thought if youd go to the trouble/expense of triples you'd do some head work/engine work.....makes sense now Quote
