Noticed in this video how relatively slow up shifting can cost lots of time, check the graphical speedo. So flat shift manual or else get an auto

Well the auto comment was a bit tongue in cheek but then again there are plenty of paddle shifting autos doing much quicker than 2.31 around Bathurst so no bizarre at all, fact. It was more about the time lost with some manual shifters when flat shifting by whatever means will be quicker as illustrated graphically by the video.

Are those paddle shifted transmissions really "autos" with a torque converter though or automated manuals? One of these things is not like the other.

Here's a quick overlay of a full synchromesh 240z and a Golf GTI with DSG.  The time lost with even a quick clutch change adds up pretty quick around a lap.

The makers classify DSG transmissions as automatic, no clutch pedal with automatic or manual shifting, Porsche state that their DSG will give faster lap times than their manual. I'd put a DSG box in the project car if that was practical but there is no aftermarket interest, drag racers are happy with their US automatics and everyone else is joined at the hip to their manuals.

Whats wrong with a sequential dog box then, all the advantages of clutchless shifting, just have to be able to drive it....

 

They are the gearbox of choice for the IPRA boys, but they are limited somewhat in the rules.

 

Some of teh Prod sports guys are using sequential with either stick shift or pneumatic or electronic paddle shift.

 

For me, the cost of multiple 5 speed S14 boxes when driven with some mechanical sympathy means I have a few to go through before I need to worry about a dog box.

 

Oh and for the vast majority of us, the time taken to shift lost on a lap is nowhere near the time lost due to lack of talent.

In the first post flat shifting manual or auto was suggested, we all lose time due to a lack of talent but is this a reason not to improve the car's lap time potential?

I don't think it's just the mechanical advantage. When you are using paddle shifters, you don't have to think about changing gears. That frees you up to concentrate on driving and because it shifts so fast you can sometimes use an extra gear; i.e. more likely to put it in first than with an H-pattern manual. I feel this thread is kind of stating the obvious though unless it's not about "shifting gears faster makes you faster"?

 

Also i have an auto in my Lemons Soarer race car and it's definitely slower around a track than an H-pattern manual, by absolute shed loads. "So flat shift manual or else get an auto" doesn't stand up at all.

 

The more I type the more I feel this thread is pointless.

Back in the days before GoPro. Just tape a small Japanese cameraman to the side of the car and try to make him shite himself

Seriously though. When Alan Jones won the world F1 championship in 1980 driving a Williams, he and Carlos Rheutiman (not correct spelling) had the same cars. Carlos kept blowing up gearboxes. Alan was much better at looking after the car.

Unfortunately these days with computers and Telemetry the driver is really only steering the car. I don't mean to say that they don't have talent. I'm just old school and prefer to see the driver and car working together without all of the newer technology.

In my opinion cars like the Mitzy EVO tend to drive themselves, putting an automatic in an old school car is a long way from that and the money and the effort put into the project car could easily have been spent on a well proven platform like the S chassis where everything is available off the shelf. So different strokes for different folks.

 

As for driving, I was never comfortable downshifting a manual, big feet and inflexible ankles, should have gone to dance school to fix that
