Cliff Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 To chev or not to chev, that is my question. I recently purchased 2 X 240z off a fellow member and will restore one of them fairly stock (the better of the two). I was thinking of maybe selling or storing the other (as I have the room) or maybe even swapping for a 260z 2+2 (+cash adjustment as applicable), but the more I look at the little car the more I think she wants a chev under the bonnet [son]. What are your thoughts? Oh, and for those who are going to call me nuts – I have known that for many years now!!! Enjoy Cliff Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted December 8, 2015 Administrators Posted December 8, 2015 Go ahead, 1 less original S30z makes mine worth more. . Quote
andyk_79 Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 Fair few have done it (including some members on here) and some of the USA car mod shops sell kits to make it less painful. Google is your friend here. Also take a look at the hybridz forum - plenty of modded cars over there. Quote
red76z Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 (edited) Do it I have. Just be careful with transport regarding litre to weight ratio. The 240 is a lighter car than the 260 2+2 that I did the mod on, and they may not allow it with new rules. Do your homework first before you purchase anything. Happy to help with any questions. Patch Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 (edited) There was a 2 + 2 for sale in Brisbane on a FB car for sale page with a Chev 350 in it, I think they wanted $9750.00 for it, Located in Southside Brisbane - 0431767734 https://www.facebook.com/groups/408114532635786/permalink/930803483700219/ Edited December 8, 2015 by Patch Quote
KatoKid Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 I love anything with 8 cylinders but would only do this if it was an all alloy LS 260DET 1 Quote
Moderators PB260Z Posted December 8, 2015 Moderators Posted December 8, 2015 Hi Cliff I like the idea of V8 power in a Z and have thought about it a fair bit myself. As red76Z mentioned, do your homework before investing any $$ I would talk to a certifying engineer about the project - the adoption of the VSB14 standards has made the fitting of 350CI engine impossible in some peoples opinions. Cheers PB Quote
260DET Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 I love anything with 8 cylinders but would only do this if it was an all alloy LS Agree for many reasons, most obvious. Quote
Sirpent Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 You should head over to Hybrid and read the forum there on LS conversions http://forums.hybridz.org/forum/74-gen-iii-iv-chevy-v8z-tech-board/ Quote
Gordo Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Or you can do the maths. And when your finished with all the engineering BS and running around you can just buy this for a fraction of the build cost. http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/13678-craigs-v8-monster-260z-2-2-for-sale/ Quote
Geos260 Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 i was gonna do it but cost allot of money after doing the resto so i left the six, a good v8 is the lexus ls400 4.8ltr v8, its an aluminium block and you can get it engineered, in nsw the maximum you can do is 5ltr v8 for a 2 seater... Quote
d3c0y Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 The only V8 i've be interested putting in a Zed is a Ferrari 360 V8. I think it would really suit the zed with the way it delivers its power. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FERRARI-360-MODENA-V8-ENGINE-360KW-3-6L-WITH-LOW-KMS-NOW-SELLING-/140791661463?hash=item20c7d64397:m:mp8bjUpkucakpqE8q4JID1w Quote
Scoota G Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 I like my Small Black Ford 2+2. So do a bunch of other people. Getting the engine sitting right is the battle. If you can do the work yourself then go for it otherwise yea you are 50K + Quote
neRok Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 If I was going all out I would consider LS or something, but these days I appreciate period correct engines and conversions. My 2+2 has a rather stock 350 and it's still good fun (it was built by an engineer in QLD over 10 years ago, and I transferred it to WA with no problems), but I have seen the 302 small block ford windsor engine conversions and think they are a great option. 600Z Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Hi Cliff, Just a note and this will create a bit of a debate but be very careful in regards to engine displacement as in a 240Z weighing 1100kg your allowed 4.4 litre max!!! A 240Z is NOT a 260Z even though it's still a S30. It's what's on the compliance plate. Do your homework if you want it to be legal, see attached ruling. Quote
600Z Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Hi guys, Another quick one i have been through this in the past with members on here so I'm not about to go through or over the ruling of this, if you have got your 240's passed with larger engines eg. LS1 or alike great i just hope nothing happens that may ask questions as it is pretty straight forward and hense why 260's are preferred for V8 conversions as we can use the 260 2+2 weight. Technically 240 drivers can't. Read the vehicle standards bulletin 14 for further information. I know this may create a debate which I'm not really wanting or intending to start but just do your research and make, twist or take the chance its your decision at the end of the day and what risks you may want to take. Again guy's I'm not trying to upset or put anyone off side but he should know and get what information he can. George 1 Quote
red76z Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 (edited) You are dead right 600Z the 2+2 can go as big as 5.9L and the 240 is 5.0L this is in Tasmania. As said before check your local rules. Edited December 10, 2015 by red76z red76z 1 Quote

Cliff Posted December 10, 2015 Author Posted December 10, 2015 Thanks for your comments guys. I have to finish my 'better' one off first so I guess she can sit in the shed why I think about it. Who knows, hopefully, my kids will be interested in the old Datto when they get a bit older and we can all play with it together. The idea of swapping my 2nd 240 for a 260 interests me as then I will have one of each but I still think the 240s are the best (yeah I know already ). Have a good weekend Quote

Surely a 240z is only better from an original standpoint? If going V8 I hardly see a difference. Same chassis and you can swap tail lights easily enough. Quote

red76z Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 That is what I use to run in my zed before the ls1 transplant. They are a good motor. Quote
