Nope, never. At most, you get ideas when looking at others mods and or pictures / videos from the net. Sometimes you do modifications to make something work better for your needs.

It's my car, so I make changes that I want to.

No, I appreciate input but it's fair to say I have a vision in my head of where I'm going and I often stick to it. Although I originally wanted to turn HS30 150 into a rat rod type build. I don't know if I'll end up doing that now, I think I'll restore it, simply because keeping the patina seems to be more effort than actually doing things properly :).

This is how I feel when someone gives me a negative opinion on my car haha . I currently drive a 300zx, so I get plently of negative ones  ::)

I think the answer is - depends on who's opinion it is and what type of modification it is.

For example if I'm looking at replacing the exhaust system of course I'll seek out others' opinions to learn from their experiences and get the right product for my car. I think you'd be mad not to.

However, I don't care that the guy at the service station reckons my car would be better with a turbo and 18" rims.

Simple as Its your car not theirs the only one that has to live with it is you, so as long as you are happy as the saying goes 'f**k the haters!'

Opinions help for specs of parts etc but other than that your own vision is what really matters

Wire wheels, V8 and a scoop make this more hotrod style but i must admit i was influenced by a fellow with a 393 Powered Zed before i built this.. I like this one more than my 2 Seater. Oh and i got some new stuff going on with the engine to take the Nitrous.

No, Its good to listen to others opinions.  But that is all they are Opinions.

Do what you want to YOUR car. If the car is something special or rare be at least a little sympathetic

to the cars heritage

If I listened to people I wouldn't have done this

Input is always great but if you do follow through on the input it will ultimately be your choice because you have to decide that's the direction you want to take.

I find parts more often controll the path I take as the original idea was a big NA L28 build with triple carbs and such but the L28 I was looking at got sold with a car and now I have a L28ET on the way.

I have been very busy of late about three years with business but always try to visit this site.Love these cars. With my car, the way it ended up,depended a lot on me and my friends interest of tuff street cars.Powerful with a bit of old school. Most of my mates have muscle cars with serious power and i wanted to be different as i beleived the z to be a better engineered car than a toranna,hq,camaro ,xy etc and heaps more all round fun, straight line, stopping and cornering.so the end result i think has alot to do with the purpose of the car.Factory standard restore, custom, race car ,show car or a bit of everything?Go scoota.

hmmmmm, my 280zx has a big exhaust, is better now because of a turbo and also has 18" rims. many more mods to come also.

my 260z however is going to be stock as a rock

how many different zeds have you driven?? the reason i ask that question is, not many people hand over the keys to their zed to just anyone to drive and so therefore many owners of early zeds have only driven 1 zed their own, and that makes it difficult for a person to make a good judgement of what to expect only to except their vehicle for what it is ,, Iknow big wheels on early zeds makes them pigs to drive, then someone else may except the fact the car climbs gutters when you let go of the steering wheel and pronounce it drives GREAT>

Yep my 240z with big wheels and flares doesn't drive much different to my stock 260z

It has no issues with a steering. No bump stear and no tram lining.

And the steering is no heavier.

A lot of people mess up their zeds steering with poor wheel choice and warn out suspension components.

It's a funny question in the zed community (OP topic) as so many of them are built the same way with the same looking parts.

That was partly behind my question. You see the same mods on a lot of cars. Seems like there's a formula for success that people follow.

Seems like there's a formula for mediocrity that people follow.

Fixed that for you.

The more S30s you see done the same way, the more boring they become, and the easier a new trend gets started...

When everyone modifies their Z's the only way to stand out is to go back to original ;).

As mentioned earlier, it does come down to who it is that's giving suggestions and whatnot.. but generally for me personally, I only take people's opinions into account when I'm in a dilemma. Not knowing whether to go flares of standard guards, for example. I hear people out to convince myself that one way is better than the other.

On the topic of everyone modifying their cars a particular way, well there's a reason why a certain style is popular. For the S30/31 chassis, I think the obvious trend is flares, fender mirrors and Watanabes/Rotas. It's a great look, and you see build threads all over the internet with people going down that path but in reality, where are those cars? I rarely see that style at meets or on the street.

For me personally, I have always modified my cars basing it off examples from Japan. What looks good and try to 'copy'. I've always thought the western culture way of modifying cars has been a cock measuring contest, ie. who can fit the widest and lowest offset wheels, for example, and it looking terrible as a result.
