George Posted January 31, 2015 Author Posted January 31, 2015 Got some parts plated. Overall happy with the results although some need to go back for a second attempt. Now all I need to do is sort out these: back into their bags... gav240z 1 Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted January 31, 2015 Administrators Posted January 31, 2015 Nice George, gold zinc plating? Who did it and how much for a large box? Which ones didn't turn out well and why? Was it dirty or corroded? Quote
George Posted January 31, 2015 Author Posted January 31, 2015 It was $250. There were other parts not pictured and lots of fiddly little ones like the terminals out of engine bay lights. It's those little parts that add time (cost) to the job. I had 2 sets of window regulators done and there was some grease around the springs which wasn't cleaned thoroughly. This prevented the zinc from adhering. The grease is pretty hardcore stuff. Took a while to clean and for the second pass I have taken the springs off. A couple of other smaller pieces just weren't cleaned properly in the acid bath but the guy did say to return anything I want happy with. He's pretty good to deal with. http://www.pioneerplating.com.au Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted January 31, 2015 Administrators Posted January 31, 2015 Thanks George, would it be feasible to keep all items together via steel wire or similar? Just thinking of keeping everything in order. I'm also worried about parts going missing. Comes with the territory I suppose but I want to redo many of the SU parts and I'm worried I'll end up missing hard to source parts. Quote
George Posted January 31, 2015 Author Posted January 31, 2015 Thanks George, would it be feasible to keep all items together via steel wire or similar? Just thinking of keeping everything in order. If you were to do the wire work I don't see why anyone would have a problem with that. Talk to whoever is doing the plating and see what their process is and how you can help them to achieve what you want. They deal with restorers of all sorts with rare parts so I expect they will understand. If they're not accommodating your needs, move on. gav240z 1 Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted February 1, 2015 Administrators Posted February 1, 2015 If they're not accommodating your needs, move on. George that quote right there is something that has taken me a LONG time to learn.. But if I only followed this bit of advice more often I would have avoided a lot of anguish. Thanks. Quote
Old Man Z Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 George, I think those parts look pretty good and not a bad price when you consider the prices of individual parts that have been re plated and are for sale on eBay! Relatively small investment considering how much they will enhance your restoration . If you find your happy with the end result ,I will be sending some parts there myself. Also,I have found a place in Sydney that will re chrome the plastic parts on the Z's and have my wheel centre caps and 260 taillight bezels there ($30 per cap and $80 per bezel, again pretty reasonable considering how much ones on eBay are) so if they come back to a suitable standard ,could be of interest to others here! George Posted February 1, 2015 Author Posted February 1, 2015 I would love to hear how you go with the plastic chroming. The guy I dealt with said not many people are doing plastic as it's difficult and the volume isn't that high so it's not profitable. Quote
Old Man Z Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 George, will definitely be interesting to see how the parts go. Shop thought parts will be ready this Friday? Personally was in no rush and thought that timescale was a big opportunistic but if they can deliver and to a satisfactory level , could be good for all those on the site wanting to re chrome the ABS parts. Will keep you updated. Will Quote

The guy I dealt with said not many people are doing plastic as it's difficult and the volume isn't that high so it's not profitable. I sent my tail light trim for plastic rechroming to this place in Adelaide George http://www.aclassmetal.com.au/ I was very pleased with the outcome but cant remember the price. Quote
KatoKid Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Plated stuff looks great George. What sort of prep/cleaning did you do on the nuts/bolts compared with the likes of the window regs/door latches? Quote
George Posted February 2, 2015 Author Posted February 2, 2015 No prep work on my part, just what they would have done which is acid cleaning. Interestingly, the acid did not clean off all of the grease in the window regulators which left small sections unplated. Either that or they didn't actually clean them in the first place but that's unlikely. I have cleaned them by hand and will be taking them back for a second pass. Quote
Ledge Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 A Class here in Adelaide are the only spot to send Chrome and plating. Quality is second to none. Been using them for over a decade now. gav240z 1 Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted February 18, 2015 Administrators Posted February 18, 2015 So better or worse than you thought? .. At least that's as bad as it will get... Quote
Riceburner Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 It sure is a light weight model George! It's all rebuild from here and that light at the end of the tunnel just got a little closer Quote
George Posted February 18, 2015 Author Posted February 18, 2015 So better or worse than you thought? I thought it would be in worse shape Gav. Don't leave your classic cars out in the elements for a decade boys and girls... The tin worm will eat it. Quote
zzzzed Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 I saw your car in person today George. Wow it's going to be a big job. But it's nothing Paul can't handle. Quote
260DET Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 Look on the bright side, now is the opportunity to rebuild it stronger than stock Quote
Brabham Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 Wow, at least the boot floor looks ok! Looking forward to the rebuild, will be epic. Hope all the sections you need from the parts car are in good nick Quote
jeff43 Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 Doesn't look too bad George, x2 nothing Paul can't handle I'm sure. What is the radiator support panel area like? "Back from the blaster" pics didn't show that area. I may have some parts left over from my build that could help out in that area. Let me know, I can give them to Paul at the Adelaide All Japan Day next month if needed. Cheers Jeff Quote
George Posted February 18, 2015 Author Posted February 18, 2015 Thanks Jeff. That's mighty kind of you. I've not seen that section but I'll mention it to Paul. I feel like I've been holding my breath up to this point. I obviously knew the shell was bad but until it's blasted you just don't know what really lies ahead and the anticipation of this moment has been replaced with calm acceptance. I've only really had one concern since day one and that was getting to this point and being told that it's too far gone to repair. That hurdle has been cleared. The rest should be easy right? Quote
dat240z Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 What would be cheaper? Repairing and fabricating that shell back to standard or buying a half decent/clean 240z shell? Just out of curiosity. Quote
