positivetennis Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 If you couldn't get a 240z or 260z 2 seater as a weekend classic to enjoy which of the following would you choose and which would you avoid. The cars I have included allow someone 2m tall to fit comfortably. They are: 1. Datsun 260z 2+2 (8 - 14k) 2. Datsun 280zx (6 - 10K) 3. Toyota supra Mk3 (5-9k) 4 Mitsubishi gto na (8 -13K) 5. Subaru svx (5-8k) 6. Nissan 300zx z31 1988 model (4-8k) 7. Jensen Interceptor (18-20k) 8. 924, 944 (5-14k) Doesn't need to be fast, I am after something interesting and unique to enjoy in good condition. Would prefer a 2 seater 260z but the reality is that its getting hard to find one now. Are there other options you could recommend. Thanks Quote
Oz Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Sit tight and wait for a right Z to come up. I'd add the 928 Porsche to your list - they're a cool car Quote
Retro Z Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 I would get a mk3 supra. If you can find a Jza70 with the 1jzgte that would be the pick. Ma70 (7mgte) is ok but have head gasket issues and look a little uglier than the jza70 supra. The 1jz supra is damn quick too with around 200kw stock and a hell of a lot more reliable than the 300zx and gto. I had one back in 2006 (ma70 with soarer 1jz) and not much other than a gtr could catch it and it ran like a clock. I would avoid the gto and svx as it can be quite costly to maintain those cars due to rarity of parts etc. Quote
44014 Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 I would go a 280zx if I could get a 2 seater. Quote
luvemfast Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 I would go a 280zx if I could get a 2 seater. ^^^^^^ What he said Quote
chris240 Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 You left out a Valiant Charger with a 340cuber.. Quote
cracker Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Just wait around for a 2 seater at the right price! Depends entirely on how patient you are willing to be of course but zeds seem to sell in waves - 6 come up in a 3 month period then nothing for 6 months. I would have been somewhat content with a 2+2 but would have still yearned for a 240z so just waited patiently then jumped at it when one popped up. Good luck James Quote

Once torque correctly and built the 7M's can make secent horsepower. It's that fact toyota forgot to torque them, that have made them been seen as boat anchors. Quote
pauly_adams Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 people will kill me for saying this but if your not built like a brick s!!t house then a z32 300zx might not be a bad idea, a mate of mine is 6.3-6.4 and he had no issues in it, there a great car if maintained and you can get a decent one for under 8k Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted January 3, 2014 Administrators Posted January 3, 2014 1. Datsun 260z 2+2 (8 - 14k) 2. Datsun 280zx (6 - 10K) 3. Toyota supra Mk3 (5-9k) 4 Mitsubishi gto na (8 -13K) 5. Subaru svx (5-8k) 6. Nissan 300zx z31 1988 model (4-8k) 7. Jensen Interceptor (18-20k) 8. 924, 944 (5-14k) I would wait for a 2 seater Z myself, as it seems to be what you really want. Otherwise my list would be: 1. Early SA22/FB RX-7 2. Datsun 260z 2+2 (8 - 14k) 3. 944 Turbo (don't even bother with a 924) 4. R32 GTR - if you can find a clean 1 within budget. 5. Toyota supra Mk3 (5-9k) Quote
PZG302 Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 I already have my other two cars: 1. NA6 MX5, surprisingly quick around the twisties and can be driven hard standard, mine does 66's around lakeside with only coilovers and and exhaust. 2. VH Charger with 265 Hemi running a 4 speed and triples with 3.5:1 LSD. Will be quick and the engine builder has been given the brief to build a motor with around 320 horses and when started the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse are to appear at the top of the driveway. Quote
positivetennis Posted January 3, 2014 Author Posted January 3, 2014 Many thanks for the great responses. I will continue to search for an s30 as first priority followed by a nice 2+2. There always seems to be more for sale in Victoria like that beautiful orange one that sold on just car website, wonder if anyone has seen the green one there as well. A 2 seater 280ZXT would be great, seen a few advertised by a business that imports cars from America to Australia for a price of about 13-14k landed, but haven't seen hardly any from Japan come here of late as I guess they are worth a lot more over there. The mk3 supra is good value at present. Quote

Six_Shooter Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 I'd wait for a 240Z to come along, they come up fairly often. Otherwise I'd look for: -510 wagon -FC RX-7 -AE86/Corolla -'70s Sunbird/Monza/Firenza There's others that I can't think of right now, but they'd either be farther down the list or on my "Never gonna happen, I'm dreaming list". Moderators PB260Z Posted January 4, 2014 Moderators Posted January 4, 2014 Gidday I first decided I wanted a Z in the mid 80's but for a number of reasons didn't buy one. Over the next 25 years owned all types of cars but never that Z I really wanted, and none of really gave me what I was looking for. I have now decided to get what I always wanted and have started down the road to Z ownership. So what I am saying ? If you know what you want, don't let anyone stop you - Just Do It - anything else and you will be disappointed. Thats just my 2 cents. Quote
acf321 Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 944 hands down. Amazing and understated sports car. shoot for a turbo, and get onto Lyndsey racing in the US ... amazing tuning ability and strong as an axe. Quote
d3c0y Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 You could upgrade the verada to a 380!! Or are you holding onto it until verada prices to go up again? Quote
positivetennis Posted January 4, 2014 Author Posted January 4, 2014 D3coy:Hi, if I do sell the Verada before I get an s30 then a 380 vrx/GT/sx with about 60k might have to be on the cards. luckily/unluckily only had two enquiries so if I end up hanging on to it then I can continue to wait and put money away for an s30 if the right one comes up soon. The KL Verada has 110k's and is on the market for $5900, so I can't lose too much if I keep it for another year or put 10k on the clock. Once it has around 140k I wouldn't mind letting it go for less. Quote
PeterAllen Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 A Morgan or a Jaguar Mk II, failing that anything with wire wheels. Quote
DreamZproject Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 Amazing taste in cars, wasn't aware of the subie or Jensen. Makes me want both of them so bad! May i suggest an MR2? that's what i have got myself as a daily precursor car to my 260. Really cool little car with really unique fantastic handling characteristics. With a turbo I imagine would be scary fast! I took it for a proper blast the other day and I couldn't possibly wipe the smile off my face. Quote
Agno Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 I'd take a Fiat X1/9 over an MR2 but the Italian blood in me might be influencing my decision If I was to step away from my 260 and into another classic I would be looking very closely at either an Alfa 1750 or Fairlady 2000... But I'd take an early girl 240Z before any of those! Quote
DreamZproject Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Those fiats are cool, but far to slow you'd have to go FI to get any sort of decent power out of them... Quote
DreamZproject Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Yes? I assume there is a lesson here? Quote
Agno Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 I wouldn't be buying an X1/9 for going fast in a straight line, they are quick because they handle. Also there is nothing wrong with well set up carbies! I think that point has been emphasised to you ad nauseum Robbie... Quote
