  1. a picture might help
  2. well the engine runs, if the timing was that far out it would not start let alone run so it might be the pully as suggested. put a piece of paper wad in no 1 plug hole and wind the engine over till the paper blows out, stop turning as it is coming up on the compression stroke, place a wooden dowl in cyl 1 resting on top of the piston and watch it as you line up your pully it should be rocking the piston when the pully is at TDC recheck all your timing marks
  3. stale old fuel will make it run like crap as well
  4. have you done a compression test, is it good, have you rechecked the valve clearances.
  5. it may have a cracked block in the cylinder wall allowing water in once it heats up, that's what what I found did you retention the head.
  6. forgive me for being so old, but i have never heard nor tried doing a compression test by winding over the engine by hand, hook a battery up to the bastard and test it properly.
  7. mmmm i think totally illegal on a sreet car
  8. I was keeping a set in case I wanted to go back original but I doubt if that will happen so yep there is 2 there you can have
  9. Yeah I couldn't throw it out... you know what a pm is right, click on my avatar and find to out where I live.
  10. I have a couple of consoles but they are pretty sad, the dash has a lot of snapped off bolts cause the nuts were frozen and the pad has the usual cracks
  11. from your description its possible that voltage regulator might have a problem but if it is going ok a bit hard to diagnose anything until it fails again. if it has an external reg you could remove the cover and check if the contact points are ok if they show signs of arcing might be safer to replace it. it may well be an alternator short as well, that's where i would start.
  12. A bit on the expensive side but if I could afford it and wanted something simple it would be this one, http://garageequipment.com.au/product/maxjax-standard-package/
  13. Nah stay home, you will get too many trophies, they are very sought after and extremely expensive. ;D
  14. me too, or i should say we 2
  15. take off the sender wire turn ign to on, it should be 0, earth sender wire and check it should be hard over on high, it could be thermostat or the sender unit, 3/4 in heavy traffic stop go sounds pretty normal but you would expect it to drop when cruising, you need to check the thermostat operation in pot of boiling water, replace it if its been in there while not expensive. Acceleration problems no clue take it to a professional I am not psychic.
  16. good one Gav, a little trick I learned somewhere with the lettering that is recessed and letters arn't real crisp, melt a white crayon tip and swipe it across the letters while molten brings up the letters like new.
  17. ah yes washers, I did mean the heavy std ones normally used on the manifolds not flat washers for a nut and bolt sorry bit misleading.
  18. an exhaust leak will not do any mechanical damage, how ever there is potential for fumes to enter cabin, engine fire, etc. It depends on how much you drive it as to how long it will last, it will gradually get louder as the gasket falls out. when you take the extractors off get the port face skimmed and make sure you use washers under the nut that contact both inlet and exhaust firmly and even.
  19. nah our local small town vicroads guy thinks he is god...when it comes to the rules you are allowed to have a 20% gain in horsepower and when I said that the 28 is not 20% increase on a l26 he cracked the shits and told me it was illegal and wasnt produced with the L28 so engineer, load of crap I think.
  20. you dont need a receipt if you cant get one, just a signed stat dec. is ok. dont tell them it is L28 motor out of another car, the inspector probably wont pick it up
  21. my local know it all vicroads clerk, refused to let me put a l28 in my 260 as they were not manufactured with one, reckoned I needed a engineers certificate, rang the engineer and he said to go back to vic roads, needless to say a grinder was very near the engine number and might have gone a bit astray
  22. clutch out whirring, front gearbox bearing, clutch in whirring thrust bearing. but yeah they are pretty close. more investigation is required
  23. do not remove the thermostat and leave it out you will get more problems, but I would suggest you replace it, while its out nip the housing back on no gasket ,remove the bottom radiator hose and stick the garden hose in it, open the heater tap and reverse flush it out the cap, cant hurt
  24. look down the bottom of page under reference: efi bible in pdf I found this to be a very good resource
  25. make sure the cold engine sensor (it has a fuel injector type connection), and signal to the ecu are working correctly, might be over fueling.
