Mate, I would go light, light, light with your flywheel. The stories about them being hard to drive on the street and hard to launch are just that, stories!! It's a lot more important to make sure your tyres are square to the road at launch, than worrying about your flywheel weight! Tyre compounds are where you will make up real time here. My 1600 has a very light flywheel and is usually dicing with a MR-2 for fastest 2wd to the first split at hillclimbs and we often beat 4wd's. A big torquey 6 should be better again. Get that weight off the crank and it will love you for ever!! The boy's are right it's all in the head and don't be worried about building a 'screamer' it takes a lot of race miles to wear out a L series Datsun. If you want to stay in the same class as you run now, have a very close look at the first three on Mr.Dobies list. Hodgo
  3. Good work, go the rat!!
  4. Didn't BenZed build a Toyota powered Zed? and sold it to the Poms...
  5. Hey Roger, I was there with Peter Hall and Tim Knappstein, what a bugger I would of loved a chat!! It was a suprise birthday gift from my wife, I didn't know anything about it until 1 hour before the plane left. Great weekend, I got a lot out of it and Pete's got me fired up!!. I also saw a tough light metallic blue Zed with silver(?) stripes over the bonnet pull out onto South road as I was heading to the plane Sunday arvo. Anyone's on here?
  6. Thats good news, I've had my rims around 18 months or more, maybe they changed it since, or I need a word with my tyre guy...
  7. Sorry to say Agno, but I was told when I got my 16 x 8 Superlites they only came in the one offset, which is a bugger. The GTR type Superlites may be different? I had to give my 240z rear guards (and front) a fair whack with the guard roller to get them under. Volvo 4 spots with Falcon disks fit under the big superlites easy, and Hilux 4 spots with 250mm discs fit under the 15 x 6.5 inch rims on my 1600 no sweat. Hodgo
  8. Hey Guy's was anybody at the two day meeting at Mallala last weekend?
  9. Well done Guy's, catch ya when you get home. Enjoy the weather, It's not much down here at the moment. Hodgo

  11. I'm a past State board member for CAMS, but now love AASA after Rally Tas this year...I was rung up Fri arvo at 2.00 and asked If I wanted to navigate...yep.. two and a half hours later I was sitting in the car at the start line, that is, I signed up for a licence 30 min before that, we missed breifing, the car had a very quick scrut , I drove it through the Start as the driver was still signing stuff, 20 min late for the first stage (Prologue luckly!), I scored some notes but had no road book for the Fri stages and we came home 2nd outright, chasing down the leading Porsche until the clutch went on the 3rd last stage!! one of the best weekends of my life, sure beats doing the 2 start controls I was going to do. The Event Director came and had a beer with us at the dinner, raised his glass and said 'well done boy's...we couldn't have done that with CAMS....' The guys above are right, unless your in the top 3 no one really is fussed what spec you run, I've seen Zeds with 16 x 7.5 inch rims with 225 tyres etc etc etc. Hopefully they will be able to keep the 'Demo' class that Jason ran his 120Y in, as it's a ripper and the public love it, he is right that FX was a Sports Sedan but was great to see in action, should be more of it! Stu Benson once told me that 80% of competitors are in it for fun, 20% think they can win it and 3% can win it...
  12. Sorry to Hijack....I only said 432 as the rules last year were not 100% clear on running a twin cam engine in a single cam car, hence the 432, I've just found out they have changed the wording for this year. It can be any straight six, non turbo, from Nissan. OK carry on...
  13. Cheers, that makes sense.

    Unique car mag

Has anybody got a copy of the the Unique cars magazine from a few years ago with the article about Peter Hall and his Zeds? Cheers, Hodgo
  16. I hope this isn't a very stupid question Gareth, but what slides did you drill out?
  17. Yep, best class since sliced bread....you may or may not have enter your zed as a 432 to completly cover your backside..
  18. Pete, this puppy will be gravel rally legal you know.....
  19. Mate, the smart thing for you to do now, before you start building anything is to join your local CAMs car club, if you havn't already. You'll be amazed who lives locally, we have ex Rallyart and Glen Seton racing mechanics, the local TV antenna guy is a gun engine builder, also switched on mechanical engineers, fitters and turners and electricians etc etc. Put your hand up to help out at events, which will give you a heads up on how it all works and runs and takes that pressure off when you do compete, it also puts you in the good books with the above!! If you get a chance try and navigate for someone in local club rallies and pester someone doing a Targa event to be in the Service crew, again both will give you a heads up on how it all works and will be invaluable when it comes to competing in the event yourself. Remember the golden rule..the best money you can spend in motorsport is entry fee's!! get those flying hours up.
  20. http://camsmanual.com.au/pdf/04_rally_road/RR05_Tarmac_Rally_TechRegs-Classic_Q211.pdf Page 16, no.1.10 is the one for you to look at. I've had a good look down this path, and If you want to run Targa type events buy some 48mm Webers. Other than this rule C3 is a ripper!! Remember Club level racing is free, So running lap Sprints, regularities, Hillclimbs etc etc etc it doesn't matter what you have to squirt the fuel into the head.
  21. Just to repeat what 260det said what class are you looking at competing in?
  22. Hey Dave, I used the Bluehawk 9012 compound and with a change to 200B (Commodore) calipers from the Twin pot 240K's the car went 1.5 seconds faster around Symmons, but like I said it monstered disc's. They were fine at hillclimbs and need a little warming up but seemed to stay 'hot' all day. I just did the Hilux 4 spot swap, still with the solid discs and rear drums and It went quicker again...I should of did this years ago!! $50 for a set of calipers, around $400 to get them kitted and Performance Friction pad and they bolted straight on! Using a 240K 7/8th Brake Cyl and 240k rear cyl on the drums, oh yeah get the larger 253mm 200B disks and machine them down to 250mm which gives you an extra 6mm of disc, which my little man on the lathe say's makes a huge diference.....yeah,yeah, yeah! (Oh yeah 200B Struts..I bent my 240K ones..) So there you go..the tight arsed 1600 owners braking lesson. Sorry to mention the mighty boxey machine on this fine sports car site, but do this Dave and you will be lapping MGB's in no time..
  23. Yeah I was using 250mm 200B Solid Discs at $30 a pop....not worth worring about!
  24. Thanks for the tip, PZ. I've used BlueHawks in the past and was very happy with them but they were costing around $500 a set!! there around $120 a set in the US. I'm using Performance Friction at the moment which again are excellent, but the Hawks seemed to have a better 'bite' when you first hit the brakes....but they ate discs something shocking! If your not using a race pad on the track you wont believe the huge difference they make, even at $500 a set they were cheap for the amount of lap time you lost.
