  1. Anyone competing or spectating? I know there is at least one Zed running.
  2. Now come on Lurch, do the right thing, tell him it's un-fixable and send it to the recycler. I did my bit and helped write one off last year

    Gear ratios

Did I say something wrong? What I should of asked, was It falling off the cam? or just dropping lower in the rpm range than the other shifts? and was the engine pulling cleanly back into the upper rpm range. Sometimes that taller 3rd gear can be handy, being able to hold 3rd longer between corners rather than having to grab 4th. Gearing can be tricky for hillclimbing as you want max acelleration, but minimal time wasting gear changes I navigated for a good mate of mine in his Zed back in 2001, with the same gearbox and 4.4 diff as above and clearly remember thinking how well the torque of the 6cyl handled the 2nd the 3rd jump, no real gap. I also recently watched some video footage of the same car at our local hillclimb thinking the same thing, hence trying the same set up straight up in mine. If you were trying to competitive in class A with an L16 I would give you different advice but with a grunty, flexable L28 I would of thought a 4.4 would work very well enough with a 260 or 280Z box? If your still having problems, or feel that it is effecing your times, the cheapest way is to try a 4.8 R180. I noticed that's what PZG said he ran at hillclimbs and they are easy to find, If you were in Tassie I'd would be happy to lend you one. Your 100% right when you say...Horsepower fixes everything...

    Gear ratios

Hey Pal, Dial it all into Gearcalc (google it..) I did it for mine, early 260z box as above with 16x225 tyres and a 4.4 diff. If your a softy and change at 6500 it will drop back to 4480 rpm, or a bit more game and shift at 7500, it will drop back to 5170rpm. Your typical 3 gear Hollinger or Albins modded box is approx 500rpm better.. I just did my Option 1 and at 6500 it drops back to 4843 rpm and 5588rpm if you shift at 7500. Mind you it's the same as a 4 speed with an extra gear, if that makes sense? Best value Datsun close ratio box is the mighty 240k 4 speed, if you can find one and your road miles are on a trailer. 5. Just watched that Euro Hillclimb Vid that Luni origanlly posted again....That is one tough engine. That is a cool works replica acf, looks like a fun event.
  6. Great video's Guy's, here's an in-car from the hillclimb car...http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=YBirIavBZKc Some of those Euro hillclimbs are epic and that Zed is Magic!! Is that your mate with the 'small bore' Ld crank engine NZeder? your right that Escort is a Weapon, Love the Alan Mann Colours. What engine was it 'Replicating' and was that a Broadspeed mini in there as well?
  7. Cheer's fella's. I had the complete Groucho Marx get up on! Now I'm a proper sports car owner, It's not good form to be seen in a dodgy old Commodore, LOL. My Wife say's that I've had the full on Bogan dream year so far, after Rally Tas in Miss Molly Monaro and the genuine HRT replica VP on the gravel... gotta love a V8, they sure are a hoot. We were lucky all season (Team Bradbury), so I guess it makes up a little for the 3 years I was 2nd in that bloody WRX!! When the Zed is up and competing, I will put some long springs and short bottom arms back in the 1600, I'd be very interested to see how Mr Bond would go on the gravel, his old Karting nemisis is kicking arse! And Jason we have to get you down here to Tassie for the 500 Classic rally next year, make sure you bring your old mate George's car with you. Don't forget my fellow Datsun lovers, the best event on the calander will be on in Victoria this November, The Alpine!! Dont miss it. Hodgo
  8. LOL, now come on, I bit my tongue about your comments about poor old Albert the other day, and didn't start a rumour about the VG30 being a copy of 911 engine, just with a bit more vee, he he. Anyway, I think I proved my point earlier on this year when we beat them in a dirty old HQ Holden with 8 inch rims and a blown LSD, you would of loved it, they were all very upset!! I'm not the guy to do it, but I do know a couple of blokes who could....
  9. Well spotted pal, it's a good looking Zed! I really like the rims and for 1994 it looks 'up to date' now. I looked up the race number in the big Targa book and it was driven by Ian Messner and DNF'd which is a shame, anybody out the know him? I cant find the action Shot's of Shrek at TWP your brother took but heres a couple of cool photo's from '09. plus one from Rally Tas 07, a very tidy early girl.
  10. OK heres some more, The red one is the brown on mentioned above, I took this at Symmons last year. The blue Zed is local legend Duck Stevens, hopefully, again, we will see this car in action again soon. The white one is the same car as above but in Targa not Rally Tas..
  11. LOL yeah, it went over in Feb his year, I kept getting phone call's...this is no good, this is no good and the price of scrap alum is... We've ended up using the block, crank and adj cam wheel off the old engine. Everything is ready to go together, just waiting on the head to be finished. I'll be doing a good deal on a block girdle, ported P90a head and triple Weber inlet manifold(s) soon if your interested... The pic's of the black Zed are his son Dave in action at the Rally of Canberra, when he won the ARC Jr Challange, beating Roger, prompting him to buy my car.. I've never picked it before, but I'd say the silver car in the top group and the green car in the 2nd group are the same car, just a coat of paint, the cage and body kit look the same, the photos are around 5 years apart. The other 3 in the top group are all from Tassie with the bottom one still being raced/Tarmac rallied (It's red now with Rota's) and the white one is locked away in a shed, hopefully we will see it in action again soon.
  12. and some more..
  13. G'day everyone, It's been a fair while since my last 'report' but we are still moving ahead with the old girl, alas a bit more slowly than I hoped, due to a very big 2010 and 2011. I've put the Panel beater under the pump lately and he is back into it, with most of the car in undercoat/guide coat and the engine has been away at a South Aust health farm for wayward L series...I should come back very fit and healthy. A couple of mates are away watching or competing in Rally Oz this weekend and I keep getting photos sms'd to me...you should be here!! So I dragged out my old photo albums and thought I would share a few photo's of Zed's in action from years past. Look away if you think Zeds should only be used as Show cars or popping down to the Cafe for a coffee in a tumbler this is what it's really all about!! You might reconise some of the below...
  14. G'day Tim, I was just talking to a mate of mine who moved up to Townsville earlier in the year, he said he went to a kart track lap dash and saw this guy cutting loose in a white Ls-1 powered 240Z, I said I think I know who that might be, LOL. Small world. Hodgo
  15. Howdy, Mick's the man for Zed parts down here, just don't tell those bloody Mainlanders about him! There's both a 240K and R30 L24 up here on the coast in a dismantlers yard going cheap. Best option might be to reco the original motor, very easy job for any competent mechanic, they are a very simple motor and parts are not a problem. Another option might be a rebuilt L28 if you want a little more power, there everywhere and a bolt in fit. Scando has his finger on the pulse down South as well, he might be able to recomend someone in the Hobart area to do some engine work. Who services your can now? have a chat to them... Hodgo
  16. Gav, is the drive slot in the bottom off-set like a normal L series Dist or central. If central I'd say my engine had one, and it was an imported L28 turbo. I'll have an oil pump drive shaft to suit soon if you ever need one? Hodgo
  17. LOL good work Scando and Tir33d...thats proper fuel consumption!!
  18. Watch out, that bloody Hadden will try and chat yours Mrs up and pinch your driving boot's LOL. Well done Jason should be a hoot!
  19. Good work, 4 seconds a lap quicker than Siddens!! How bad is the Sports? big fix?
  20. Hey Guy's I was pretty keen to come over and spectate/officiate this year as well as do a bit of 'recce' with a veiw to run next year, but the Alpine is calling.....hopefully we can have a 'Team Tassie' running there next year, I'd love to see Bondy and Mick causing some havic over there!!
  21. I'm pretty sure the gong was a 240z hubcap as well.
  22. So what was your lap time at this decayed run down place then Jason??? Fangio did a 9min 17.4 in 1957...
  23. Here are a couple of photos from the event.
