  1. You would need to check up on the "use a more aggressive final drive ratio" bit and see what the 350Z gear ratios are - I have two cars with 6 speeds (S15 box in my Datsun and an MX5) - both use a 1:1 5th gear ratio, so same as 4th in Datsun 5 speeds - you still only have one "overdrive" gear. S15 box does have a slightly taller 6th than top gear in a 5 peed, but the MX5 6 speed actually has a shorter top gear ratio than a 5 speed so the opposite is true - at the same speed, it revs higher in top gear with a 6 speed than it would with a 5 speed (ignoring different diff ratios, etc - my 6 speed MX5 actually has a less aggressive final drive than a 5 speed one to suit the gearbox better). Disclaimer - despite having regularly driven a 350Z, I know nothing about the ratios of the box
  2. Likewise. I lost my mum in August, its just plain horrible. Hope you're holding up OK.
  3. It was a nice colour, with just a small hint of metallic to it. Thought I'd have a look thru a few old photo albums for a pic of it today, couldn't find any but did come across a photo of the girlfriend's (now wife) KE55 Corolla. I liked the colour on the zed that much, I painted her car the same colour a few months after the zed was done. Of course, I took plenty of photos of that but none of the zed.....
  4. No photos that I'm aware of, unfortunately. It looked like an immaculate stock 260Z with perfect body and paint from the outside. Next time I'm talking to my brother I'll ask for the rego. Doubt he would have the VIN. Most definitely had an R200, I replaced it with an R180 from a 240K when the diff packed it in and remember having to replace the moustache bar and halfshafts as well - I still had the R200 moustache bar till not long ago when I gave it to someone on here. And I still run the old R200 halfshafts in my 1600. I know its a long shot, but thought I'd ask on the offchance it was still around - thought being red with a green engine bay might make it distinctive, although that was near 30 years ago. This is the colour, looked really nice on the zed (well, better than the old green.....)
  5. I had my brother over for Xmas and got to talking about the good old days, as you do. One thing that came up was his old 260Z 2 seater, and what became of it ? Anyone know if it still exists or seen / heard of it ? Was originally Leaf Green (pale green metallic green), I resprayed it in Toyota Red Mica, a dark-ish metallic red. Engine bay was still green. White interior and wire wheels. Driver's door was mismatched, I think it had a 240Z one ?? We bought a door (I think it was from Z16 in Sydney ??) to replace a rusted one and had to go back to get window mechanism, etc, to make it work. Originally auto with an R200, was fitted with a late-ish Skyline 5 speed and an R180 when traded in at Kloster Ford in Newcastle somewhere around 1994. Not looking to buy it back or anything, just curious if it still lives. Although if its up for sale, more than happy to pay double what it was traded for ($4000)......
  6. To answer my own question - yep, seems that both Subaru R180 clutch and torsen type LSD centres utilise the same output shafts. Or at least the Torsen style R180 from a 2018 manual WRX works with the Kameari shafts. And a plug for Kameari (and Fedex I guess) - ordered Xmas Eve, arrived on my doorstep this morning, $550 all up including post. Add in the $125 for the diff and the scrooge in me is very happy !
  7. A belated thanks for the suggestions above guys, I wouldn't have thought to try buying direct till I came across this post. Was very easy, parts needed will be here quicker and cheaper than buying the same thing from the US or via a reseller of Kameari parts.
  8. I'm in need of a new diff, looing at Subaru R180's. Going back thru old threads, I haven;t been able to confirm for sure what R180 the stub axle adapters fit ?Do any / all of the readily available stub axles adapters to run standard Datsun halfshafts fit both clutch plate and torsen diffs ? Or just one or the other ? And what are the current options for the adapters ? Kameari / USA / ???? My old diff was an RX turbo R160, bolts straight in, but sadly I've broken the LSD housing itself. RX turbo diffs are impossible to find nowadays so I'm thinking if I lash out on a pair of the stub axles, next time I break it I can just grab a new R180 and chuck it in.
  9. Pm'd - need a knob for my 180B SSS, this would look great.
  10. I had a BMW and a BSA of pretty much the same vintage (just post war). Both 250cc singles. Side by side in the shed, and when riding them, I don't know how England won the war. BMW was at least 20 years ahead of the old pommy BSA in terms of design and manufacturing techniques. R71 would be cool to own....

    R200 Half Shafts

No worries, glad you're sorted. I was going to offer a 1600 shaft for you to either try or for me to measure up if you couldn't get what you needed, went down the shed for a look but all I have spare is a pile of worn out ones with dead uni joints and another pile like what you already have. The ones with splined end that I fitted to my brother's car were definitely from a 240K coupe, I pulled them out of it myself. For completeness in case anyone is interested, the halfshaft is 400mm from diff flange to hub flange when fitted to a 1600 (well, when fitted to a rear suspension assembly sitting on the floor, may be a slight variations when in the car with weight on it).

    R200 Half Shafts

Do you have the halfshaft that is splined on the inner end and bolts direct into the diff with one central bolt, rathe than the more usual ones that have a flat flnge on either end and bolt onto a little stub axle that then is bolted into the diff ? I probably didn't explain that too well.....Anyway, I swapped out an R200 in a 260Z ages ago for an R180 out of a 240K, it used these different style of shaft so I had to swap both 240K diff and 240K shafts into the zed. The original R200 260Z shafts I took out are now in my 1600, they fitted fine. I'm not going to guarantee it would work the same way, but perhaps 1600 shafts may work for you and be easier to find than R200 zed shafts ? Early 180B's also used the same shaft as 1600's till they swapped to the alternate style later in their model life.
  13. I recently used a needle scaler to de-rust and remove paint, worked great. . . . On my trailer...... I wouldn't use it on thin sheetmetal
  14. No sorry, it was a "loaner" so I could have a bit of fun on the skidpan (I was Clerk of Course so technically was supposed to be running the show, so perhaps I should say I borrowed it to test my course layout for safety.........). I'm helping run another motorkhana for the same club Friday week, if the same car turns up I'll try to remember to ask.
  15. Dunno about quality - I've driven a 1600 running them and it went quite well, but it was a race car on a wet skidpan so idling and low rpm drivability weren't high priorities.....
  16. Typically, they are "FAJS" branded with this brand name cast into the top cover. They usually state that parts such as jets, etc are interchangeable with genuine webers.
  17. First one is 240K. I have a couple, including one that was fitted to a 1600 and had the pins bent the same - guy I got it from said this is so the pins reach the mechanism that cancels the indicator.
  18. Pretty much the same as the original Hitachi SU's, same design, same size. Only difference is that parts for British SU's are readily available and cost a fraction of the price compared to the Hitachi's.
  19. A cayman S ? If I had the money for that I'd have a new Hilux in the driveway..... Actually, if I had the money for that I'd get a proper driveway first so I don't need to tow the race car out when it rains.
  20. I stole their toy to use as an engine building aid ?
  21. Seems to be a deceased estate. Having been in a similar situation with my father's estate (which included a collection of vintage bikes), in most cases its not worth messing around to get a few extra bucks for something like this. Datsun nuts are freaking out about the opportunity to get a zed, but to the seller its probably just one more thing amongst a pile of other stuff, house, etc that needs to be sold up quickly with the least hassle possible. "Best offer on the day" will sort that for them.
  22. There seems to be a difference between "what its worth" and "what Hayden thinks its worth". "What its worth" is whatever a buyer and seller agree on, an auction type scenario will work out its true worth pretty quickly and accurately.
  23. So would about 147 other people.
  24. They are British ones.
  25. Ha, I got a compressor for my 21st. Still going strong many resprays and 35 years later - only thing I got for my 21st that I still have. Are the frame rails very complicated ? Never seen 280ZX rails, but most Datsuns I've messed around with have relatively straight forward rails that could be made pretty easily, particularly if you're not fussed with 100% originality
