Administrators gav240z Posted February 26, 2017 Administrators Posted February 26, 2017 Some awesome historical footage of the 240z prototypes that were driven around Canada and the US. Quote

HS30-H Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 It's apparently got a 6-speed in it. I have NFI what box it is though... It's an Option 1 F5C71-B dog-leg, direct-drive five-speed. Quote
C.A.R. Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 It's an Option 1 F5C71-B dog-leg, direct-drive five-speed. I originally thought that to, but no - it's a 6-speed gearbox. Watch this other video: Quote
HS30-H Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 I originally thought that to, but no - it's a 6-speed gearbox. Watch this other video: So you reckon he's got six forward gears but he's only using 5 of them? I think he's using 5, but including 1st on the dog-leg at the slowest points on the track. Quote
CBR Jeff Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 Yep got 6 but I can see why you think it's 5. Go back to the very start of the video. Jeff Quote
HS30-H Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 Go back to the very start of the video. Gadzooks! Witchcraft... Seen several of them behind L-gatas, but not many behind S20s... Quote

I've driven quite a few vehicles with Opt1 gearbox's. His gear selection Vs car speed didn't look quite right, so I investigated some more. Even IF it had a 2.6 1st gear Otp1, his car speed out of some of the slow corners just appeared too high... Edited February 26, 2017 by Lurch ™ Quote
dat2kman Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 (edited) Much like Alan Moffats Group C Mazda RX7 touring cars, of 1981-1984 His driver, Yoshimi Katayama, who was told, "Do not go off the circuit, there is no reverse gear, it is 6 speed gearbox" He refused to believe it until he discovered it for himself. The rules for this category were ambiguous, in their wording, Moffat used that, to great advantage. It was a H+1 pattern, with first gear to left and up. These were put together in-house. Same pattern as in the Skyline in the video above, no doubt his pit crew pushes the car backwards, when required. Alan has seen 6 speeds behind a few L series engined cars, these would most likely be the AISIN 6 speed as used in Mazda MX5's, and Nissan S15 ( same centre section, different bellhousing and ext housings) The factory that makes gearsets for Giken and others, do a nice CR gearset for them, as 1st gear stock, is a stupid ratio, and it's still an overdrive box, so not so good for higher torque inputs BTW the gear widths in these are same skinny size as 71A&B gear widths! Administrators gav240z Posted March 11, 2017 Administrators Posted March 11, 2017 Is that a Mach wheel? lol Quite possible, I think Alan would be able to verify though. From what I understand he had some involvement in the restoration of these cars. http://japanesenostalgiccar.com/motorsport-nissan-prince-r380/ Quote

Cozza Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 Would be nice if he gave it a bit more right foot action. He kept looking in the mirror to be sure he wasn't getting lapped by one of the buses. What's the half a cup holder thingy in front of the passenger seat? Quote

What's the half a cup holder thingy in front of the passenger seat? I think he was worried about getting hit up the arse by much faster stuff (including the circuit tour buses....!) whilst babying it around the course, mis-shifting and altogether being far too conservative... However I have a little sympathy for him. I tried to sit in it and just couldn't manage. I'm not tall, but I just didn't fit. I would not - literally would not - be able to operate the pedals with my bum properly in the the seat. Physically impossible. They must have moved the seating position forward to get the straight six GR8 into the Brabham chassis. Original drivers were built like jockeys. The thing on the dash is a fire extinguisher mounting bracket. gav240z 1 Quote
Cozza Posted March 12, 2017 Posted March 12, 2017 So they should have got my Grandma, she's probably smaller and more exciting. ? Fire extinguisher bracket, of course. Thanks. Quote
brent012 Posted March 12, 2017 Posted March 12, 2017 (edited) Youtube recommended me this, have a look at 3:04 - first L series video is from an Auszcar user! Lot of misinformation, but the guy has a lot of subscribers. Edited March 12, 2017 by brent012 Quote
