This popped up today after a teaser a few days ago. Gee I like some of the things about this car. Love the colour and the sound.

The "unfiltered wheat beer of cars"! Classic line.

Interesting video out of Merica.

8:55 - that moment you realise you're getting something as good if not better than an early 911... :D

And he's driving a watered down HLS30 with (3.6 diff ratio), 4 speed box etc.. Compare that with the top of the range Z432 or Japanes Fairlady 240Z-L or ZG etc.. Or even AU market 240z with the 3.9 diff and 71A 5 speed box..

Original diff ratio for that particular car would have been 3.364:1, which makes the contrast with all other markets look even more stark.

Maybe they are comparing it with a similarly dumbed-down and softened-up model of 911 then...?

The car is clearly modified.

Bit of Safari Gold love and the old L-series sounds lovely.

Nice 2+2 here in what looks like GP Maroon.

Ever wondered what 2+2 looks like with earlier style tail lamps? I've always wondered.

I remember seeing this movie as a young bloke at the drive in movies. Remember them?

Still 1 in Blacktown Sydney and another down Dromana way in Victoria.

I took my first 73 240z to the drive in (Dromana) when still on my L-plates, and I remember driving it back at night to Rosebud/Rye and looking at the gauges in the car thinking "how cool is this!". That feeling has never worn off.

Does it get any better? The chrono tach is a cool touch, was that a period item. I'd imagine they'd be hard to read. Checkman or Mach steering wheel?

Has 260z door cards, but 240z tail lights. Is it a 260z shell?

That's probably the wrong way of thinking about it. It was an Omori as opposed to Oppama built race car in period - a 'bitsa' built around late 1973/early 1974 - apparently intended as a race parts development test mule and - soon after - de-tuned (switched from injection to carbs) and pensioned off to the Nissan Racing School for pupils to drive at Fuji Speedway.

I've had several good looks around it over the years, and have talked to the guys at NISMO who run it at events these days. Long story...!

The chronometric tach is driven off where the original oil pump would have been. I couldn't see any marks on the steering wheel (even underneath) but I suspect it's a Mach.

Thanks Alan, It looks awesome on track and sounds great too! What a treat to be track side or in the bus touring around. The leather work on the wheel looks similar to the Mach style.

Any ideas on the power output when running the injected LY28 as opposed to the carbs, I guess it was a moving goal line in period? Do you know the details of the paint scheme, in particular the 'blue lion head' (my best description) on the doors.

In period, Nissan's own (internal) race and test data showed their 'LR24' engines in 'LY' crossflow configuration - running at the then legal capacity limit of just over 2.6 litres - with ECGI injection, were pegged at around 280ps at 7,200rpm in endurance race trim in the 1973 season. Later they were running at capacities around 2.9 litres and over 300ps. Most of the races they were taking part in were relatively long distance, two driver stuff.

That paint scheme was - I believe - originally conceived for the two works 240ZRs that were entered in the 1973 Fuji 1000km race. There was a brace of Sunny Excellents (running ECGI injected LZ engines) in similar livery in the supporting races. I can't tell you what it was supposed to signify, or who designed it - sorry! In fact I've never looked into it, so perhaps I should.

The car in the video never wore that livery in period. I think Nissan/NISMO chose it as an iconic scheme to represent the heyday of the Z's race career in Japan. I kind of wish they had left it in the Nissan Racing School livery it used to wear...

Do you have any photos of what that looked like?

Great looking race car, one of the best but can he drive it any slower?

They should have bolted you into it. I'm sure you'd show them how it's done...

In his defence, that's Haruhito Yanagida and he has nothing to prove to anybody. The NISMO Festival is a demo event where Nissan bring a lot of their old race cars out of hibernation and run them around a race track. It's not a race. Most of the old cars are babied around and are just trying to keep out of the way of much faster and more modern stuff (and the circuit buses). In the LY-engined 240ZR's case, NISMO haven't got an awful lot of spares for it and it would NOT be cool to stick it in the barriers or stick a rod out the side of the block.

Personally I'm more affronted by the blue silicone hoses than Yanagida not being in the right gear, off line and not giving it the full beans.
