Riceburner Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Ram tubes will give higher velocity air into the carbs so the torque characteristics are altered, the problem with filters on the trumpets is that you get turbulence at the trumpet mouth so kills the effect somewhat. Sock filters are fairly messy too, oil residue will end up everywhere. You could try an air boxwith cold air intake getting the full effect of the trumpets, like scootas. I ran triples without trumpets and with 105mm long trumpets, the difference was very noticeable, generally the longer the trumpet the better the low down torque. Maybe you could fit the trumpets so the bad/deformed side faces the ground, keeping best side on show. They look fairly good to me. You could always make a Perspex airbox Quote
Scottz Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Anyone using one of these? (Top-End Performace - website pics). {My first attempt at attaching a pic - hope it works :-\}. Quote
Riceburner Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 I actually got one of those and the fibreglass was so terrible I didn't even use it, also it will only clear the strut tower if you run a shorter intake manifold such as Mikuni. Quote
stevo_gj Posted November 12, 2010 Author Posted November 12, 2010 I'm interested in the airbox idea but I'm not sure if its worth the hassle. I could have the K&N filters for normal use and if I'm going to a show I could bolt on some of the weber air horns. Quote
stevo_gj Posted November 12, 2010 Author Posted November 12, 2010 Well had a successful day borrowing a winch and bunch of gear from Greg that resulted in me getting the engine up on my stand. Thanks Greg, hope your knee operation heals quickly so you can get back on the road again soon! Quote
sexual_sushi Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Oh cool, so don't need a hand on Sunday then? Quote
stevo_gj Posted November 12, 2010 Author Posted November 12, 2010 Yeah all good, was gonna text you tomorrow. Thanks anyway though! I don't have much planned for sunday arvo if you want to look at the gauge faces for ideas, I could come to yours though? Quote
sexual_sushi Posted November 14, 2010 Posted November 14, 2010 Hey mate, sorry just read this message, big night! Just finished cleaning up. Maybe one night this weekend or on the weekend? Quote
Z Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 Just on the filtration choice with your 28 - I had the K&N air filters (not the roundish looking ones) that Sexual Sushi posted, on my first 240 and I reckon they look the business! Quote

Steve, air horns are those things mexicans put on their car to play music. like "la cook a racha". I don't think Weber make these I think what you are after are trumpets.........but feel free to add air horns if you really think your neighbours would appreciate them Quote

But Seriously... If you go the way of the trumpets, let me know if you find a better solution for the displaying of these, as opposed to ending up hiding them under a K&N style sock filter, I love the look of them, however not to sure i would be keen to run them filterless, or just with mesh, as i hope to have a long term relationship with my engine. sexual_sushi Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 I posted this on Rev's thread a couple of months back, looks slick and has the best of both worlds! Quote
stevo_gj Posted November 16, 2010 Author Posted November 16, 2010 I don't suppose you have more details of that engine? I'm assuming it's a custom part, but if by some small miracle they purchased it from somewhere I would be all over that. Quote
kobes Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 Possibly I am missing a step in the logic, but i presume there is a filter somewhere in the air intake? or a pod filter at the end of the air intake? otherwise i would presume containment's could still be introduced into the box? Do not suppose you know what setup was being run on the other end of the air pickup? Quote
stevo_gj Posted November 16, 2010 Author Posted November 16, 2010 Pretty sure there is a pod filter at the end of the hose leading into that intake. Quote
stevo_gj Posted September 16, 2012 Author Posted September 16, 2012 Hi Gents! Been a while since I've posted about my Z! Life, job, GF seem to leave me little Z time although I still do browse the forums. I'm currently organising an engine rebuild of the original L26. Have the following things planned: -Full rebuild -Replace pistons with Nissan genuine 240z flat top pistons -Install mild camshaft -Install new ebay extractors from NSW -Install new ebay aluminium radiator with twin 12" thermos -Dyno tune of the SUs after rebuild Current timing for this work is likely to be December. Will post photos. I've never been to an exhaust shop before, so maybe you guys can help me out here. I was wondering if I could ask them to modify my exhaust so that it gets loud at 3500 RPM, and that below that it is quieter. Is that something that they normally do/would know how to do? Is it going to cost me significant performance? Any useful links where I could educate myself on exhaust design would be appreciated. Cheers! Steve Quote
Agno Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 They might be able to place some sort of RPM activated actuator in your exhaust which could, depending on configuration, make the exhaust louder or quieter. Such a device is used on current model HSVs. Google "Varex" Quote
garvice Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 Good too See you're still alive. Got to tell you though steve, life only gets busier. I hope you are actually doing some of this work for once and not just limiting your job to driving to shop and handing over a wad of cash? At least pulling the engine? On the exhaust note, my advice is pull the pants up and get used to the sound (cars are meant to get louder the faster they go) or start driving like a granny and don't use the full rev rangearound theneighbours. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted September 17, 2012 Moderators Posted September 17, 2012 Be careful where you want it to get loud; at 3500ish rpm, that might be around freeway cruising speeds so on a long drive, could get very annoying. Trick is big center resonator, big straight through rear and that should give you a deep rumble without attracting the wrong attention. Quote
stevo_gj Posted December 23, 2012 Author Posted December 23, 2012 Hey guys! Well the work has begun on the motor, I pulled it out and sent it off to be rebuilt a couple months ago. I should be getting it back in early Jan. Unfortunately I could not install the 240z pistons due to my cylinders being slightly too large from wear. So brand new flat top aftermarket pistons are going in as recommended by the builder. I have bought the Stewart Wilkins entry level extractors HPC coated. Based on advice from another thread I am going to install a stainless 2 1/4" exhaust with magnaflow straight through resonator and muffler. I have installed the new radiator, ready for the engine. Anyone want to buy either of the following: Ebay 240z/260z extractors (painted silver), untouched original Nissan 240z flat top pistons? Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted December 23, 2012 Administrators Posted December 23, 2012 From memory its easier to install motor with radiator removed. Will also help prevent accidental damage. Quote
Gordo Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 +1 on the radiator, you might need a bit of room to swing the motor around. Looking good though. nothing like spending the Christmas holidays in the shed. lol. Quote
C.A.R. Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 Damn! Steve:"Sideswiped by an uninsured van! Collected the boom gate as a bonus..." Quote
Moderators PB260Z Posted February 1, 2016 Moderators Posted February 1, 2016 That Sux. I hope the damage isn't to bad. Quote
garvice Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Oh that sucks. Was looking shmick still by that photo. Quote
