Perhaps we should split the topic though? I have my Zed insured for $15K I picked it up in late 2002 for $7.5k but I wouldn't sell it for under $12k despite it needing work. I do think Zed cars are under valued, compare with a Mazda RX3 most are listed around $20-$30K on say www.carsales.com.au I think the Zed was a better car, but I do like the RX3 also. Perhaps we can gather some opinions / values / ebay sales values / car sales values over the course of 6-12 months and pass that data onto Shannons / Unique Car Magazine etc.. That was one of the points of our Ebay thread in the classifieds. We can keep track of current values. On the world market Zeds are relatively cheap in Australia, the US is the cheapest but even over there the right cars fetch good money. Quote
fluffydice Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 Thanks for all the help this info has been really great. There hard to find in decent condition arent they. I'll just keep looking and surely something should come up. Quote
Lynton Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 Wouldn't you think that if 2+2's are now being restored that must say something about supply and demand for S30 coupe's anyway? Most of the time I look at prices of top Zeds, S30 2+2's are about $5K less than a top coupe but the gap is closing, my 2+2 is insured for $10K and I wouldn't sell mine for less than $15K either! (I think it is worth at least $20K) but it is hard to get the insurance company's uneducated opinion a whole lot higher, another example is the Healey Factory in Victoria will turn their nose up at putting Zeds on their car lot so what does that say about heritage and value and a Zed as a connoisseur's a sports car, it is certainly upto us as a club with numbers to present many photos, editorials, national events to re educate all car insurance companies about the quality of our classics. (look at triple carbies, alloy heads, paint and body work restoration and interiors) nothing comes cheap Lynton Quote
dazzed Posted December 30, 2008 Author Posted December 30, 2008 if i recall about 8 years ago a z register was set up dont hold me to this but i was imformed approx 5 years ago ther was 195 240zeds registered in oz, now that dosnt sound a lot but if you lined them all up it would look a lot , now that is registered vehicles on state roads so im sure that there is plenty more unregistered out there , so compare that to a rx/3 mazda coupe the numbers would be lower, hense the higher price , the lower the population of cars per capita the higher the demand is , 2+2 s are favorable for the flow on body style of the 240z and currently easily obtainable, certainly a more comfortable car to drive on long distances due to more modern refinements than the 240, i think a lot of people associate datsun as cheap , people are confronted with a 240z for sale with a 25k price tag and crap their pants, ussually cant afford that sort of money and go and look further, they then end up purchasing a 6k priced car and over a period of time throw massive amount of cash at it , then look back and frown as they should have purchased the 25k car which they now realise was cheap compared to what they spent now, everything goes up , so to restore a car this year will cost more than last year, tho the prices of the cars dont seem to follow the suit Quote
HELLFIRE! Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 i think a lot of people associate datsun as cheap It doesn't help the S30 when buffoons like Jeremy Clarkson insult a Nissan by refering to it as a jumped up Datsun. When people ask you (question to all) what you drive do you mention that it's a Datsun or do you just mention the Z part? I realise that technically Datsun is just an export badge and really our Zeds are Nissans, but I say Datsun with pride! Quote

Lynton Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 Here is an American web site which has a weekly vote poll Which of these low-cost sports cars from the early 70s will have the biggest run-up in 2009? 1975 MGB 1973 Jensen Healey 1972 Fiat 124 Spider 1970 Triumph Spitfire 1974 Datsun 260Z http://www.sportscarmarket.com/scmpoll/ Maybe we should all get on with numbers to help change the face of recognition and vote for the 260Z!!! 620Z Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 I think most people who own a Zed don't care what other people think about their cars. Sure we take pride in our cars and it would be nice if the old Zed was recognised for the great potential it has or has been modified to do. But the sad reality is most people will see it as a crapy Datsun. I say if you want a car that everyone will be impressed with, then go buy a name brand car that would most likely still be out performed by the Zed. But if you want something a little different that can go real well on the track (out perform most) and won't get much recognition from the mass's ignorant of it's potential then the 240Z-260Z is your car. For me, I don't care what people think of my car. But if I can beat Ferrarri's and Porsches around the track then that is enough satisfaction for me. I rocked up at the lights only last week next to a supercharged V8 T-Bucket Hot Rod. He kept looking at my car wondering what was under the bonnet of this "Datsun" since it made a bit of noise at idle. We had a go at the light's and I beat him by more than a car lenght to 120klms. "THAT"S WHAT I'M TALK'n BOUT" All show and no go! Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted December 30, 2008 Moderators Posted December 30, 2008 Very true Craig, the problem is when you mention the name Datsun, the first thing that pops into their mind is a 120Y. One other little incident I forgot to mention in a post of mine above was a d@#khead in a 4wd who backed into my zed (in the 1/4 panel just on the corner near the tail light) in a car park. He claims he didn't see it (must have been using the "force" while he was reversing) and after he hit the car he asked me how much cash do you want to clear it up now. I had a good idea then on panel work back then and told him "between $500-600". He just laughed and said I'll give you $150! Next words from my mouth were "I'll get you 2 quotes"! He just thinks its an 120Y equivalent...He should've taken my price; it ended up costing $760! Quote

I suppose its better than having it the other way around. Its only in Australia this mentality exists and those who know cars, don't have this attitude anyway. In Ireland for example people have fond memories of the old Datsun's that were once on their roads (they are all but rusted now). In the UK its the same story. If I mention Classic Japanese cars people don't blink an eye overseas. If I mention it here, people think I'm smoking something. I personally love old japanese cars, I think there great fun. If people will think down of you that's their problem. They don't know what they are missing out on. Quote

Jeremy did have lots of praise for the 240z in another episode. In fact he was banging on about how the newer Zcars were not nearly as good as the original concept. He also shows a line up of Zcars drag racing down a runway strip and he comments on how the 350z only just manages to beat a 260z from the 70's. Quote
stevo_gj Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 Slightly off topic, but I think they are well overdue to use an S30 in one of their episodes for a challenge. For reference, my 75 260z 2 seater is currently insured for $10K through shannons. The shannons rep who gave me the price said that once I have reupholstered the interior and done my manual conversion I would be looking at about $12.5K. Quote

modular9 Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 The z race ( yeh it is a repost... what you gonna do .?! ) http://www.metacafe.com/watch/110690/old_new_nissan_z_s/ on the main topic of z car values : I believe there is a glass ceiling to the value of the zed. I love the zed ( in fact i love the 2+2 more than the 2 seaters - it does happen. ). and for the CURRENT prices you get a very ( i think this is so important I am bolding that ) good car and a superb performer. In fact I'd go as far as saying in the mid sized/classic/sports car market nothing comes close for the money. However. If prices were to reach the early to mid 20's then you are in a different league. People are used to seeing some pretty exotic machinery around for early to mid 20's. And the datto just isnt as exotic as some of the would-be competitors. Just my opinion as a person who isnt wedded to one car or brand just likes well sorted cars for an honest price. Quote
matt drago Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 I'm insured with Shannons also, for $20k. At first they would not agree to that value and asked me to bring it in or send photos. I sent them photos of the engine bay and exterior and told them that the interior was still to be put together and they gave me the $20k. Maybe it just depends on who you get as a rep? Cheers, Matt Quote
zzzzed Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 can i ask what it costs to insure your zeds through shanons? Quote
chris240 Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 I pay around $300 for $16,500 cover thru Shannons. Yeah I fully agree with Matt, it really does depend on who your local Shannons rep is..In Canberra there are 2 guys that run the office, 1 of them just doesnt seem to like Daddos, (hes a Tranna man)..I reckon I could have insured it for more if I took it to the other guy. C.A.R. Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Yes, Shannons valuations can vary on which Rep. you speak to - it can be rather fustrating... Quote
HELLFIRE! Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 My daily driver is insured through Shannons for $6,500. For those of you that made it to the Vic BBQ it was the red 2+2 with the dented drivers side front panel. My 2 seater that is awaiting restoration is only insured for what I paid for her, $2000. However I know there is no way in hell that I would be able to replace her for that small amount of money. Being unemployed sucks! One of the problems in the insurance market is that we only realy have one choice and that's Shannons. To insure your Z through another agency is long winded and complicated. Sorry for derailing the thread earlier Gavin Quote
reverendzed Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 I just 'upped' my cover with Shannons to include recent work that I have done, they asked for photos for verification and then increased my cover to 15K no problem. Also as a side note my wife recently had a bingle in our other car (the super delica!) and Shannons had it sorted very quick and were very obliging. Rev. Quote
Toecutter Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 I pay $170.00 with GIO for full comprehensive cover to the loss value of $19,500 but thats with limited km's on club plates. Sulio Quote
