The Global Z-car (S30/S130) Market Thread.

They only see 1 or 2 hit the market and assume what that means for prices. This is the problem with comparing cars on the market in general. It is rarely a case of comparing apples to apples.

I have to say the Toyota 2000GT which only hit 550k and the C10 GT-R sale on Bring A Trailer for around 170k surprised me but a car can look very different in person and its history can also impact prices.

If nobody is bidding higher at an auction others might think there is something wrong, that's the auction. Double edge Sword. Private offers are better for achieving maximum value weather it be real estate or cars.

Most of those knuckle heads in North America still think they should be able to pick up a rough 240z for 1995 prices so I wouldn't read into it too much.

That's why I usually stir the pot a little and write "cheap" in the comments of a classified ad or link. ????

The Datsun 240Z was a turning point for Japanese automakers. This car proved The Land of the Rising Sun could compete in a sports car market rife with British roadsters and muscular Detroit iron. For those who desire a bit of classic motoring with Far East reliability, look no further. This true, series one, 1970, 240Z is finished in a repainted Sunset Orange over black interior. An L28 engine block but a non numbers matching engine has been fitted. Many enthusiasts consider the N47 head a welcomed upgrade. Arizona car, same owner since 1986. Car has been repainted from its original orange but presents nicely. Evidence of its original orange color can be found with the wheel arches and engine compartment. The car has recently benefitted from around $2,500 worth of maintenance and upgrades. New bushings on the suspension and steering rack have been installed. Clutch has been adjusted. A tune-up and oil change has been performed. All lights are in working order.

Yeah that car is rushed in many ways, I'd rather buy an honest survivor if looking to restore. Having said that, it's an early build date. So pickings are slim.

An original 280z (2 seater) in the US just sold for $36k USD (~$47,000 AUD) at today's rate.

http://bringatrailer.com/listing/1976-datsun-280z-3/

I'll add more details later, but that's a good price for a 280z in North America.

America isn't the centre of the Universe?

Nope, but it has been the laggard for S30Z values until recently, now it seems their values are moving past our own in some respects. Part of it is due to a strong USD but also seeing some of the later 280z's do well at auction which I find surprising as I kind of view them like our late 260z's over here which often struggle to get higher prices compared with earlier 240z's.

When it comes to S30Z's I find their market the least interesting in terms of models and options they got. Of course Japan had the most interesting cars. :).

I bought this 240Z when I was living in Arizona and brought it with me when I moved to Virginia in 2010. Unfortunately, as is often the case I stopped driving and working on it years ago due to a mix of a lack of money, time and ambition. The car is in great shape and drives well.

- Well maintained interior, including reupholstered seats.

- If you look closely, the dash is not one of the plastic covers that you often see in these old Z's. This is a genuine Nissan dash that was found in a warehouse around 10-15 years ago. The dash is in perfect shape and has no cracks, stains or flaws.

- It has a five speed trans from a later model 280Z.

- It has the alternator upgrade (from MSA)

- Aluminum radiator with a shroud (again from MSA). *The 240's often had overheating issues when idling or stopped in traffic because there was no shroud.

- Fuse panel upgrade (MSA)

- The points and condenser were removed and replaced with a Pertronix Igniter kit.

- As you know, because the odometer is a five digit the reading is very rarely the actual mileage as is likely the case with this one. The engine was rebuilt however and runs strong. The engine was rebuilt before I bought the vehicle though, so I have no thorough details.

- I have a Prothane polyurethane bushing kit that will go with the vehicle. This was one of my last plans that I never got around to completing.

There are some faults that I'm aware of.

- The brake pedal is a little soft. The brake wear life is good and there are no leaks so I think the master cylinder is just going. The master cylinder is easy to access though, and there are plenty on Ebay for around $50.00. I didn't worry about this because you can still drive the vehicle and I was eventually planning to do a rear disc conversion and figured I would fix it at that time.

- There is a very small coolant leak from the rear of the cylinder head just when the vehicle is cold and starts to warm. It only weeps slightly for a short time on start up after the vehicle has not been driven for a while. It may be as simple as re-torquing the the head bolts, but may need a head gasket down the road. ...IT DOES NOT LEAK AT ALL WHEN THE VEHICLE IS AT OPERATING TEMPERATURE...It does not leak while driving. The vehicle is 44 years old though and eventually this will likely need to be resolved.

- A spring broke in the driver's door lock and needs to be replaced. The door latches and locks just fine, but when you close the door the knob will not stay up so the driver's door will automatically lock. It's an easy fix and hasn't caused me any grief, I just never got around to repairing it.

- An exhaust hanger in the rear broke and needs to be welded. It would take just a few minutes with a MIG welder.

I love this car and I'm sorry to lose it. My wife and I are once again moving out of state and it's simply time to let it go to someone who will drive and maintain it. If we were not moving I would do the rear disc conversion, install the bushing kit and take care of the head gasket issue. It does have AC, but one of the lines in the engine bay has a leak and it's an R12 system. Because of that I would also do a quality AC conversion to R134A.

There's no point in me bringing it to a new house in another state just to let it sit in the garage for an unknown number of years to come, so, I've just decided to be practical about it.

It's a good car and certainly a good base for someone with big plans. It's 44 years old so it of course comes with some issues that need to be addressed, but I know whoever buys it will be happy with the purchase. I feel that I can get much more than I'm asking, but with a big move coming it's time to just move it. The car is sold as is and it will be up to the buyer to pick it up or arrange shipping.

Good luck!

Feel free to contact me through Ebay with any questions or concerns.

  • 2 weeks later...

Really not sure why people are making a deal about it and how it hasn't gone already. If that was in Australia I would be on that in a heartbeat. Would love a 2 seater 280zx one day
