Surely there is a way you can grease the wheels of bureaucracy and achieve the desired result without having to send the car all the way back.

I will get it right, the problem is that the Customs department on the one side of South Africa that cleared the car in, and the customs department on the other side of South Africa that needs to clear the car out, interpret the same set of laws differently.........

Classic.

Just like burocrats the world over.

I wish you well with this.

The good news is that the paperwork has now been sorted out without moving the car!  I'm pretty relieved and could have done without this stress over the weekend.  We are now waiting for a booking confirmation for a ship on the 9th Jan.  Fingers crossed!

About 5 weeks.  Looks like I can only get it onto a ship on the 16th Jan which will dock in Sydney at the end of Feb.

Hello,

I think that this is going to be a very welcome vehicle to arrive on the shores. Congratulations on your perseverance. From the pictures, this is the vehicle that the majority of Zed owners would like to own, but unfortunately we don't have the time, space, knowledge, patience or dollars to make that dream come true. I admire your dedication. Well done.

When you are unloading the vehicle in Sydney and you see a chap with dark long hair elbowing his way to the front of the crowd with a big grin on his face, ask his name. I would bet a weeks wage that it his name is Gavin.

Cheers

So after a very long wait, my Z was loaded into the container yesterday with my Mini (1275GTS - SA Spec car).  I can say that my patience was really tested with this unnecessary delay.  Anyway, ship sets sail on Thursday and ETA in Sydney is 29 Feb.  Something to look forward to now......

So all has been quiet on this front as the cars are still at sea.  ETA to dock in Sydney is 2 March, so we are two weeks away, plus another week for customs to do their stuff, and I should be picking up the Zed and Mini around the 8th of March!  Can't wait.

nice little mini..

be good to see it hoiking around the streets of Canberra.....and the zed too !

just pray that customs don't find a beetle or fungus & mould in the container, otherwise add 30 days wait.

Yeah pretty much true, I had my Mazda RX-7 detailed top to toe before being put in a container to the tune of 300 euro and yet when it arrived they decided it still needed cleaning.

Yep, standard approach. Someone is making a lot of $$ at the wharfs. Personally received brand new, factory delivered Lambo right off the plane and it was as clean as my new dinner plate and wrapped in plastic, yet $$ for de fumigation had to pass hands even though I've had a certificate from Italian authorities re cleaning in accordance to EU standards recognised arrond the world, the guy with a pressure hose at the docks, knew better..

My last two cars were stopped in Sydney for the same reason. I brought a car in through Port Kembla and it came through fine. The Datsun is "New" and the mini has been steam cleaned on the underside and wheel arches etc. if they stop these cars, I will lodge a formal complaint with the ACT Government. I'm tired of being fleeced!

I agree, but good luck mate...Its an absolute disgrace...The issue here is that you will not be able to prove IF (big IF) your car was spotted with a little cocoon hanging off the tyre which MAY have hatched the African Dung Beetle which will wipe out Australian Fauna and Flora s we know it. Its seems there is no reasoning and no recourse. You just have to factor this cost in.

I wouldn't be very happy about the fact the some potentially incompetent person with a pressure hose was going to be attacking my freshly painted or immaculately original car either.

How much do they charge for this "service"?

I live about 10 minutes away from the Port Kembla docks and I have a can of Mortein if that's of any help.

Sounds like a hoax to me. I can't I magine pressure washing eliminating all bugs, and fungus etc. Maybe if it was a fumigation process that would find its way into all the books and crannies, maybe.

Good luck and looking forward to seeing it sometime.

$480 per car and they just do the areas that they deem needs it.

If they impound the cars for quarantine, they give you notice and you have to agree to them cleaning the car and sign an indemnity for damage.  If it gets to this point I will drive down and make them show / prove why it needs a clean.

Last time they blew half the fresh paint off the underside of my 2002tii Alpina and they destroyed the bonnet and boot catch mechanism on my Lotus Elan.  I was not impressed, and because you sign an indemnity, you have no recourse.

So, last week I picked up a Sunbeam Alpine from Port Kembla that I brought in from NZ, and there were no quarantine issues.

I get a call today to tell me both the 240Z and Mini have been stopped for quarantine in Sydney and need to be cleaned!!!!  The 240Z has driven a sum total of 15km after the restoration, and the Mini was professionally cleaned by a Valet company.  WTF???

I've called them now with a massive Rant, and am waiting for the inspector who failed the cars to phone me back....,

That's what happens when you have a monopoly and a $500 fee to pressure wash cars, they are just exploiting it and they do it to everyone. You should take it to the ACCC.

I had my engine prepped in Seatle and when it arrived they opened the crate and advised "$400 Fumigation" because of a suss cobweb from memory.

I had a very heated discussion with the AQIS inspector who failed my cars this morning.  He has now agreed to put the cars on a hoist and inspect them properly.  If he was wrong, he will reverse the quarantine decision.  If not, he has to provide me with photographic evidence of why the cars need to be cleaned.  Either way, I am taking this higher up the chain of command.  I think they have underestimated an angry South African..........

The 240Z has be re-inspected with the inspector's supervisor present, and their decision to quarantine has been reversed!  Sanity prevails.......

The mini is still apparently an issue, but hey are emailing me photographs to prove why.

All unnecessary shite if you ask me........

So, I'll be in Sydney tomorrow to collect the 240Z.  Happy to meet up with and fellow members in the area for a cup of coffee on the way out if you like?
